Chapter 49: Chapter 49: Assault
"What… in the world is happening?"
Clan Leader Tsugawa Taishi stood by the window, gazing at the visible chaos, commotion, and disorder unfolding outside. He couldn't help but murmur to himself.
Facing an invisible enemy, his heart grew increasingly restless.
A deeply unsettling premonition kept surfacing in his mind.
As expected, his foreboding was soon confirmed. A scout shinobi burst into the room.
The scout's gaze locked onto the clan leader, and he spoke at a rapid pace:
"Clan Leader, it's a disaster! Elder Shuhei, while patrolling the village, suddenly turned violent and attacked Captain Keikyu."
"After sustaining severe injuries, Captain Keikyu barely escaped. But when he received help from Captain Morita, he inexplicably panicked, lost all reason, and killed Captain Morita."
"Then Captain Keikyu fled again."
"Currently, both Captain Keikyu and Elder Shuhei have vanished…"
Tsugawa Taishi blinked, first doubting his ears, then his mind.
What was this guy even saying?
When Taishi's brain finally processed the full meaning of the report, his veins bulged, and the temples on either side of his head throbbed.
"Why… what in the world is happening?"
Even with the latest intelligence, he almost instinctively repeated his earlier question.
Then, he latched onto the most logical—yet incorrect—explanation: someone in the clan must have fallen under an enemy's genjutsu. Only someone with their mind infiltrated would suddenly attack their own kin.
But that theory was quickly debunked as new information arrived.
Another shinobi appeared before him and reported:
"Clan Leader, we found Captain Keikyu's body. Based on his movements after being injured, we suspect…"
"Suspect what?"
"We suspect Captain Keikyu was already dead before he attacked Captain Morita. His body was found in an alley between the deployment zones of the two teams."
"What?"
Taishi's mind descended into chaos once more, his thoughts growing increasingly muddled:
"If Keikyu was dead before Morita, then how did Morita die? Who killed him?"
At that moment, a third shinobi, panting heavily, rushed to Tsugawa Taishi's side. His face was a mix of anxiety, confusion, and fear as he said:
"Clan Leader, we found Elder Shuhei's body in the late Captain Daisuke's residence. Based on the condition of the body, the elder likely died a day ago."
After a pause, he added, "Possibly around the same time as Captain Daisuke."
Taishi no longer felt dizzy or overwhelmed. Now, a chill ran down his spine.
If Elder Shuhei was already dead, then who had been attending meetings here from yesterday until this morning?
Cold sweat trickled past the corner of Taishi's eye. He felt as though he were enveloped in endless darkness… Could the enemy truly transform into his clansmen without leaving a single flaw?
Could they even perfectly mimic chakra signatures?
The thought was terrifying. Taishi subtly distanced himself from the three shinobi who had brought him the latest reports.
From this moment on, not a single shinobi in the clan could be trusted. Anyone could suddenly turn on him.
"What… are we even fighting against?"
The clan leader's mood was far heavier than a storm about to break. He felt the entire Tsugawa Clan teetering on the edge of a cliff, one misstep away from being shattered to pieces.
After burning two storehouses, killing a few shinobi, and putting on a slightly unhinged performance, Hane Genma temporarily withdrew from the village.
His mood was complex. Just a few months ago, the Tsugawa Clan had been an insurmountable colossus to him. When the Hanemiya Clan's village was overrun, any resistance he offered seemed like a mantis trying to stop a chariot.
Yet, in such a short time, their positions had reversed.
The mighty Tsugawa Clan had become the vulnerable one.
On one hand, Genma's physique and chakra had been enhanced, and his mastery of the White Zetsu's infiltration abilities had significantly boosted his strength. On the other hand, the dynamics of attack and defense between the two sides had flipped.
Genma had an epiphany: shinobi were, by nature, a profession that emphasized extreme offense, thriving only when proactively launching attacks.
His operations had gone so smoothly that they could be described in a crude but fitting metaphor: a single rat's dropping can ruin an entire pot of porridge.
Though small, that dropping had a knack for causing disgust.
After regrouping with the other two, they exchanged updates on their progress.
Uchiha Nanami and Fuma Goro, aside from ambushing a few shinobi squads, had also taken down a combat captain—an unexpected bonus.
"What about the enemy clan leader?" Uchiha Nanami asked Genma.
Genma chugged water from a canteen, let out a long breath, and then replied, "As planned, we're keeping him alive for now."
It wasn't about sparing the clan leader but rather, according to their strategy, eliminating him at the final moment. Once a shinobi clan endured enough psychological pressure, the death of their leader would mark the tipping point of their collapse.
"So… the enemy's leadership is down to just one clan leader, one elder, and one combat captain," Fuma Goro counted on his fingers.
Genma nodded.
"Should we proceed with the assault on the village as planned?" Uchiha Nanami asked.
Their ultimate goal was to dismantle the Tsugawa Clan, which required making a significant impact.
"As originally planned, we need to give the fear enough time to spread. We'll strike in three days… By then, our main force will arrive just in time to clean up the battlefield."
Moldy things, when left to fester, only grow more sour and rancid.
By now, the Tsugawa Clan would never suspect that the attacks they were suffering were retaliation from a minor, obliterated shinobi clan like the Hanemiya. They would assume they had unknowingly provoked a major power in the shinobi world, one intent on toying with and destroying them.
Delaying the assault slightly would push their psychological endurance to the breaking point.
During those three days, Genma wouldn't sit idle. He would periodically infiltrate the Tsugawa village, either to carry out assassinations or to set fires, ensuring their nerves remained frayed, with no moment of respite.
Time passed swiftly, and soon it was the evening of the third day.
A mere three people were about to launch an all-out assault on an entire shinobi clan.
Per the plan, Genma would infiltrate the village's interior for a "blossoming from within" strategy, while Uchiha Nanami and Fuma Goro would attack from the outside in.
Uchiha Nanami and Fuma Goro no longer concealed themselves. After an explosion echoed through the village, the two strode boldly toward the village gates.
At the same time, Uchiha Nanami began forming hand seals at a deliberate pace.
Perhaps because Genma had once mistaken the origin of her ninjutsu, she decided to make a distinction, showing him that the Fire Release techniques of different Uchiha shinobi were not the same.
Though still quite far from the village's walls, Nanami completed her hand seals and paused her steps.
At such a distance, ordinary Fire Release techniques could never reach their target…
But Uchiha Nanami's nostrils flared as she took a deep breath:
"Fire Release: Majestic Flame Destroyer."
Hmph…
This was the technique of Uchiha Madara.
