Naruto: I Can Synthesize Summoning Beasts

Chapter 24: Chapter 24: The Flames of War are Rekindled

"It's good that you know you're getting old!" Shangguan Mo teased habitually. He suddenly noticed the air had become heavy and turned to look at his instructor in confusion. He saw that the old man seemed to be in a daze, just staring at the fire without speaking. His face flickered with the orange glow of the flames. Shangguan Mo's heart sank slightly. He said no more, turning to look at the darkening sky outside the window. The snow was still falling. He had already guessed the reason for the old man's visit.

In a small two-story building in Yugakure, the angry voice of a middle-aged man suddenly rang out. "The Cult of Jashin is coming on strong this time, even more so than before. There are reports from all over the Land of Hot Water of entire villages disappearing. These damned bastards, if they have the guts, they should come for us in Yugakure! Attacking unarmed civilians, they have no humanity, they're animals! Animals!!!"

Inoshita Rino became more and more agitated as he spoke, the anger rising to his face, making his aged features look even more weary. "Sigh..." Shangguan Mo let out a deep sigh, a complex expression on his face. He didn't feel much for the deaths of civilians he had never met, but thinking back to his own transmigration, to the terrified faces of the villagers and their cruel deaths, and the longing for his parents and the fear and anger towards the cult in this body's memories, he felt a sense of empathy. Why did he, a transmigrator, hate those Jashinists so much?

"What... is the village planning to do?" Shangguan Mo asked in a low voice.

"Under the angry urging of the Daimyo, the village leader has held several emergency meetings and has roughly determined a course of action." At this, he looked up at Shangguan Mo and continued, "This morning, the village has already dispatched all of its active ninja. They will operate in squads and carry out devastating strikes against the rampant Jashinists within the country. And starting tomorrow, we academy teachers must also be prepared to go to the battlefield at any time..."

"In other words, the school is going to be suspended?" Shangguan Mo frowned, realizing the situation was serious.

"Yes," he nodded silently.

"I came this time..."

"Don't say it. I'll go with you!"

Inoshita Rino was shocked by the interruption, staring at Shangguan Mo's expressionless face. "How did you know..."

A corner of Shangguan Mo's mouth lifted in a smirk. "At a time like this, you went through all the trouble of finding me. You must be after my flying summoning beast!"

"Yes," he nodded, a little ashamed.

"Tomorrow, then. You go and apply with the village. We'll form a special operations squad. Not too many people, preferably under eight, but they must all be the village's elite ninja. Otherwise, the Windhawk might struggle to carry them. Don't bring the students who will just slow us down this time!"

Inoshita Rino nodded eagerly.

Suddenly realizing Li was awkwardly standing by, Shangguan Mo clumsily added, "Li is so cute, of course she won't slow us down. But this mission is too dangerous. You should stay in the village and..."

"I'm going too. I don't want to be an academy student who just holds everyone back forever!" Li lifted her head and said calmly. It was clear his careless words had hurt her.

The next day, at the Yugakure gate.

It looked no different from the entrance to an ordinary village. A half-person-high stone monument stood by the road, almost completely covered in snow, but the three large characters for "Yugakure" were still faintly visible. "So inconspicuous," he thought. This village's location and scale, much like its status in the ninja world, were completely unremarkable.

The snow had stopped, but it had grown deeper. He looked down the road leading out of the village but saw not a single footprint. It was as if the Yugakure army that had set out yesterday had truly vanished into this unremarkable world.

Crunch, crunch...

The sound of snow being mercilessly compressed came from behind him. He quickly turned and saw Li, fully equipped for battle. She was carrying a large black backpack that was half her height, bulging with unknown contents. Perhaps from being in the cold for too long, her face was slightly red. She wore a pure white scarf around her neck and a black combat suit, her heavy steps making a thump, thump sound as she walked.

He quickly went over and took the large backpack from her. It was surprisingly heavy. He looked at her sweat-drenched, rosy face with a pained expression. "How can your small body carry such a big backpack!" he chided, but his expression immediately softened. "What's in here? Why is there so much?"

"It's all of our squad's supplies! I got them from Rino-sensei. I'll be in charge of logistics from now on!" she said, lifting her head proudly.

Smack!

He gently placed his hand on top of her head and ruffled her hair. "You don't even know medical ninjutsu, and you're already thinking about being in charge of logistics?"

Li pouted and mumbled, "Who says I don't know it! I already had Rino-sensei help me apply for a medical ninjutsu scroll yesterday. I just haven't had enough time to master it yet..."

"Hah..." Shangguan Mo let out a heavy sigh and looked at her silently. This girl was so clumsy and stubborn. He messy ruffled her hair again and said no more.

Five minutes later, the sound of footsteps on snow reached his ears again. He and Li turned to look. A few blurry figures appeared in the white expanse of the village, growing clearer in the cold wind. Soon, they had arrived. Inoshita Rino smiled and greeted him warmly, as if they were old friends, which surprised the others behind him. "You're early? That's not like you! Were you too excited to sleep last night?" he teased.

"Tch!" Shangguan Mo laughed, not bothering to reply to the sly old man. He looked at the five ninja-clad figures behind him and asked, "Aren't you going to introduce them?"

"Hehehe, even if you hadn't asked, I was going to introduce them to our village's genius." He stepped aside. "From left to right, these four, like me, are academy teachers. You probably find them familiar. But they are much stronger than me. These guys are all proper Chunin, not like an old man with an empty title like me..."

Shangguan Mo nodded slightly at the four. He then turned his gaze to the figure on the far right, the one who seemed the most unfathomable. Even standing still, he exuded a sharp, dangerous aura. Just a glance made Shangguan Mo feel a prickling sensation on his back.
