Chapter 26: Chapter 26: First Ninjutsu Battle
As the squad leaped down from the Windhawk's back, a faint sense of nervousness rose in Shangguan Mo's heart. Still, he instinctively turned and shouted at the great bird, "Little Wind, protect Li! Stay on the edge and observe!"
Without waiting to see if the Windhawk understood the gaming slang, Shangguan Mo charged towards the fierce battlefield ahead. Even faster than him was the Jonin, Watanabe Mousse. A figure flashed before their eyes, and dozens of meters away, a black-robed cultist collapsed. Another flash, and the charging Jashinists were reaped like wheat, their heads falling.
By the time Shangguan Mo set foot on the battlefield, the enemy lines were already in chaos. With a wry smile, he drew a kunai from his pouch and joined the fray.
As he advanced, countless Self-Destructing Flies emerged from the ground beneath him, scattering across the battlefield to provide him with vision from all angles. However, the vast majority of the flies couldn't resist their yearning for art and swarmed towards the Jashinists, burrowing into their eyes, ears, mouths, and noses.
They were ready to sacrifice themselves for art! And art... is an explosion!
BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, BOOM!
Countless egg-sized fireballs suddenly lit up the battlefield. The next moment, the agonized screams of the Jashinists echoed everywhere. Some clutched their mangled, bleeding faces, others held their heads and shrieked in madness. One even clutched his own rear end, his eyes wide as he fell to the ground, motionless, having been anally exploded to death!
"What the...!"
Seeing the other Self-Destructing Flies follow suit, swarming towards the enemies' backsides and scaring the cultists into a panicked retreat, a chill ran up Shangguan Mo's spine. It seemed he had unintentionally synthesized something truly twisted.
He muttered to himself, "They really just follow the scent, don't they? A direct hit every time..."
Watching the black-robed figures running around in chaos, he sheathed his kunai and began to form hand seals, albeit a bit clumsily. One seal per second!
Fire Style: Phoenix Sage Fire Technique!
Several crimson fire-phoenixes shot from his mouth, growing to the size of soccer balls as they flew, intelligently swooping down on the nearby cultists. Although his hand seals were slow, his control over the ninjutsu was very strong. The fireballs, as if they had eyes of their own, slammed into three fleeing cultists. In an instant, flames completely engulfed them, leaving only charred corpses behind.
Shangguan Mo's eyes lit up, stunned by the power of ninjutsu. As it was his first time killing with a jutsu, he felt a strong sense of accomplishment.
"CHIRP!"
Just then, a cry came from the sky. He looked up and could vaguely see the Windhawk, a hundred meters up, its beak wide open, a visible storm of white wind rapidly condensing within it.
The next moment! SWOOSH! The explosive wind sphere vanished from the sky and slammed into the ground.
With a deafening BOOM, a storm of wind erupted in the middle of the battlefield. A dozen black-robed figures were instantly blown into the sky, their limbs scattering in all directions.
"As expected of a D+ rank summon. It can even join the battle without my command. Its intelligence must be comparable to the toads of Mount Myoboku..." Shangguan Mo thought with a pleased smile. He turned his attention back to the chaotic battlefield and began to form seals, ready to practice his next ninjutsu.
The large-scale battle was quickly concluded with their powerful intervention. And thanks to the Windhawk, not a single Jashinist escaped; all were hunted down and killed. But Shangguan Mo wasn't complacent. He knew this batch of enemies consisted almost entirely of ordinary people without chakra. They were just the lowest-level cannon fodder of the cult.
A week later.
Shangguan Mo and the others had grown accustomed to this highly mobile style of warfare. His ninjutsu had also become much more fluid. While he couldn't perform six hand seals per second, he no longer took a dozen seconds just to squeeze out a single jutsu. In that week, they had encountered two more groups of Jashinists, but both were led by a single Genin, with the rest being ordinary people. This left him feeling both relieved and somewhat bored.
He was the one who wanted to lie low and develop, but he was also the one who got a thrill out of battle. "This is no fun at all!" he suddenly grumbled, sitting on the Windhawk's back and chewing on a piece of dry rations.
"Tch!" Inoshita Rino let out a laugh, not even bothering to look at him.
Even Watanabe Mousse felt a bit speechless. "You're still young," he sighed. "You don't know that for ninja our age, the absence of danger is the greatest happiness."
"This kid never knows how good he has it. Captain, don't mind him. After he suffers a few times, he'll learn his place," Inoshita Rino said, taking a compressed biscuit from Li and slowly eating it with some water.
"Izumi-sensei, here you go," Li said softly, handing food and water to the first-year instructor, Izumi. Izumi took it with a smile, his eyes full of affection.
Shangguan Mo's eyes flickered. In the ninja world, many ninja, like Izumi, had no surname. In fact, most didn't. Those with surnames were either daimyo, nobles, or from ancient ninja clans. Those who weren't from a clan but had a surname had usually taken it themselves or inherited it from their ancestors, and they were often looked down upon by the clan ninja.
But in Yugakure, that wasn't the case. As far as he knew, there wasn't a single group in the village that could be called a ninja clan. Not one! In other words, all the ninja in Yugakure were commoners.
"No wonder it's never been able to develop..." he thought with a sigh.
In the Five Great Nations, with the exception of the Hidden Cloud, the core power of the other four villages had always been the ninja clans, especially those with kekkei genkai. With the development of the times, these clans had settled down and seemed less prominent than in the Warring States period, but in reality, the high-level positions, including the Kage, were almost all firmly controlled by them.
It was only in recent years, with Konoha under the Third Hokage vigorously promoting commoner ninja, that the other major villages began to follow suit. The birth of the five great villages had not ended war but had drastically increased its scale. This led to a higher death rate among clan ninja, forcing them to start cultivating the commoner ninja they had once looked down upon.
"If Yugakure wants to break out of its current pathetic state, the first thing it needs to do is break free from the Daimyo's control!" Shangguan Mo knew this clearly. The economic lifelines of the hidden villages were controlled by their respective daimyo, who used this to control the ninja "tools" under their command.
