Chapter 3: The Progress Might be Slow, but Never Futile.
The surgery has been ongoing for four and half hours, and even though Orochimaru was by no means slow, he could only finish 238 Tenketsu points in Sora's body. He looked at Tsunade and noticed how she was at her limit of using her chakra.
Orochimaru can't cope with illogical choices so he wasn't going to continue with a surgery that can impact negatively on his friend. Orochimaru stopped operating and looked at Tsunade.
"What are you doing? Keep drawing!" Tsunade scolded the pale man.
"This is a waste of time, Tsuna. My sealing knowledge won't allow me to finish this before you use all your chakra, and I refuse to see you sap your lifespan away just for something like this." Orochimaru declared coldly as he prepared to leave the room.
"Oi! Don't screw with me at times like this! We have to finish this, or he won't survive!" Tsunade looked at her friend in disbelief.
She knew Orochimaru can be cold sometimes, but she couldn't believe that he wouldn't show a hint of mercy for a dying kid.
"The kid was fine before entering here, it was our and his pride what's killing him. He refused to be less and is now paying the price, and we got too over our heads believing we could cure something that required no medical solution whatsoever. Besides, you've already run out of chakra." Orochimaru said as he sensed how Tsunade's chakra hit the bottom of her reserves.
"No… no, no, ¡¡no NO!!" Tsunade yelled as she sensed the change in Sora's pathways.
The once controlled chakra began to interact forcefully with the seals, creating a virus-antibodies relationship and chaos began to occur on Sora's body. Sora, despite being asleep, began to wriggle around and yell at the top of his lungs.
His body was being ravaged from the inside out with no control. Since the seals weren't for sealing his chakra completely but to only allow a certain amount, Sora's unsealed Tenketsus and the pathways connected to them began a process akin to necrotization in the limbs.
Tsunade could just gasp in horror at the violent reaction, this was the first time she ever performed this surgery, and she was aware of the risks based on past documentation. But seeing this up close and personal hits different to her.
Just as she was about to squeeze every ounce of vitality to save the kid, Sora's body began to calm itself down. Sora began to breath in a different manner that it was doing a while ago.
Orochimaru was also intrigued by this and checked Sora's pathways.
He was beyond shocked when he felt that the chaotic reactions were beginning to stop and were replaced by an organized flow of chakra through the pathways and Tenketsu Points.
"What's happening?" Tsunade asked to the Hyuga medic since she can only feel what's happening.
"I don't really know but, it seems that all the chakra that entered in conflict with the seals has just calmed down. It's almost as if the flow of Chakra has adjusted itself for the seals." The Hyuga medic spoke in disbelief.
He's been monitoring Sora's chakra flow since the beginning of the surgery, taking some chakra pills to keep the Byakugan of course, and he can't comprehend how everything fixed itself as if it were magic.
"However, it seems that it only affects the parts with the seal on them. The rest of the parts have slowed in their "necrotization" but it's still causing him pain by each passing second." The Hyuga doctor gave his diagnosis and stared at Orochimaru.
Orochimaru knows that he's the one with the life of the kid in his hands and looks at Tsunade. The blonde looks at him with a piercing gaze and she raises her fist and clenches it. Orochimaru isn't a fool that can't take a hint, unlike a certain white-haired pervert, so he gets back to writing the seals as Tsunade begins to gather some chakra to recover and then ease some of Sora's load.
[Sora's POV]
"You know something funny? I've been dosed so many times with sleeping gas, that I've memorized the smell. I also developed a resistance to it, but you know, new body new track record."
"Huh?"
"Why am I beginning to feel ticklish? Oh, it may be because they're drawing the seals. Well, as long as I keep feeling them all over my body instead of one area in specific, I guess everything's fine."
"Ooh. Now there's a refreshing sensation on my body. Cool like when you dip yourself in a river but it's not cold enough for you to shiver, just enjoy a hot day. Yep, this'll be fine."
(About 4 hours later.)
"Why am I feeling so heated up? Lower the AC doctors, I'm boiling here. Wait, I'm not boiling-
"AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
"What the hell is this?!! It feels like a something's on my arteries and is popping everything wherever it moves!!"
"Oi, doctors, do something!!!"
"Fuck, it seems that they're not doing anything… is this how dying feels? Nah. Dying feels way worse... this feels slightly annoying. But I need to feel my chakra first, even asleep my mind's still active, so I should still be able to sense at the very least my own chakra."
Sora focused inside his mindscape and felt his own chakra going berserk. Everything was going where it shouldn't and then there's the problem of the more "obscure" parts.
"Ok, big problem here. Everything's going to hell, and I can't really help any of it. What should I do?! I know! I'll check my memories, there's bound to be something useful there!" Sora.
Sora began to reminisce about his past life knowledge about something that could help him.
"No, no, no! most of the power level systems don't have a clear way to treat internal injuries! Most of them have either an EX Machina like the Senzu Beans or a healing character like Orihime! There must be at least ONE exception." Sora.
Just as he was about to fall into despair, a sudden voice rang in his head.
"Breathe."
Sora stood still when he heard the voice and looked for its direction. He found a memory containing said voice and he smiled.
"Right, power systems aren't everything. Afterall, these guys fought beings that far surpassed them in everything, yet they still prevailed and killed them all. The humans that really surpassed their limits with nothing but breathing techniques." Sora grinned at the memory fragment.
It was the memory of when he saw Tanjiro's Hinokami for the first time. And more specifically, the Breathing Techniques of the Demon Slayer World.
Briefly, these techniques allowed their users to surpass the normal limit of their bodies and perform superhuman tasks. Even allowed them to control every part of their bodies to a cellular level, allowing them to close some wounds and slow down the propagation of poison.
"Right, I must first calm my breathing down." Sora.
Sora's body slowly stops wriggling and his breathing becomes irregular.
"Now, I need to find a rhythm that guides my chakra through the Tenketsus and pathways that are under the seals." Sora.
Sora's breathing began to alternate from one breathing rhythm to another in order to find the appropriate.
"Deep breath, hold for 1.5 seconds, exhale for 1 second, stop for 0.5 seconds, resume exhaling for 2.4 seconds, hold for 2 seconds and finally breathe out. Then, repeat." Sora kept telling himself as he monitored his breathing.
Using the breathing as a guide to the chakra in his body, Sora managed to guide it through the Tenketsu Points that had the seals on them. However, he knew this wasn't a permanent solution, he needed that the doctors finished engraving the sealings on his body.
Sora kept working through the pain of the "obscured" parts of his chakra system until he felt the ticklish sensation come back, which he hoped was the sealing writing.
Soon after, the refreshing sensation returned but even then, Sora didn't let his breathing falter. He continued enduring the tiredness of maintaining such irregular breathing for the sake of his surgery.
As more Tenketsus were sealed, Sora readjusted his breathing to connect them all to the pathways and ensure a smooth flow of chakra.
(2 hours later)
[Third Person POV]
After arduous challenges and a lot of time, the surgery was completed. Every Tenketsu in Sora's body was sealed properly, and the body was already beginning the process to force them to grow.
(A/N: Just to be clear, a Tenketsu is said to be as big as the tip of a finger if not smaller so, Orochimaru only drew the seals OVER the position of the Tenketsu, not the Tenketsu itself. Ok? I just had to be clear since I kinda missed it explaining it last chapter.)
Tsunade looked mentally exhausted as she looked at the young boy in the medical bed. She's been hailed as a prodigy in medical ninjutsu, but this was her first time performing such a long procedure.
Orochimaru was also tired, but he didn't show it. He was more intrigued by the kid that managed to survive such experimental process even when chakra was stopped being transferred to him. This gave him some ideas for some future projects.
Sora was immediately taken to another room while one of the doctors gave the news to his parents that the operation was successful. Relieved, they both were told to come the next day to see him once he wakes up.
After being transferred to his own room to be monitored, Sora had long left his own consciousness and was truly out cold, but his body remained with the breathing method he used to circulate the chakra throughout his sealed Tenketsu Points.
Allow me to be specific at how the treatment is working.
Everything has chakra. From animals in the wild, to the plants, the oxygen one breathes and water one drinks. Even though the quantity is massively smaller than what an average human has, it's still enough to help them grow and revitalize others.
Right now, Sora's Tenketsu points are where the chakra is expelled, by sealing them slightly, Sora has no exert even more chakra to use them at his will. The process is akin to him wearing weights to strengthen his body.
The difference is that instead of physical strength, he's forcing his underdeveloped Tenketsu points and chakra pathway to grow to their respective sizes for Sora's age. Depending on how the treatment goes, Sora's seals will either be removed or remain there to ensure the natural growth of his entire chakra system.
Suddenly, Tsunade and Orochimaru entered the room to check on Sora.
"How's the patient?" Tsunade asked.
"The patient's readings are stable. The chakra is safely sustaining his own body despite being below what a normal kid should have." One of the doctors answered.
"That's to be expected, any symptoms?" Tsunade.
"Well, apart from the irregular breathing, there's nothing wrong with him at all." The doctor answered while giving Orochimaru a report.
Tsunade looked at the report and saw the irregular way that Sora breathes and recalled that he was doing something similar when the movements ceased during the surgery.
"This is quite interesting." Orochimaru commented.
"To say the least, it seems that his breathing is keeping his chakra in check." Tsunade commented.
"Since the situation here is solved, I'll take my leave." Orochimaru began to leave the room.
"Don't think I've forgotten what you almost did. You better be ready to face my fist." Tsunade was still mad at Orochimaru's attempt to Sora's life.
Orochimaru didn't say anything and just left while Tsunade looked at the kid. She was baffled that a kid so young almost dies at her hands. What if this kid was Nawaki? She could never forgive herself if she failed him like that.
Resolute to improve on her medical skills, Tsunade went out of the room and spend some time helping in the hospital till midnight.
(The next morning)
Sora woke up in a haze, he felt his body being incredibly heavy compared to before. He couldn't move properly, and he felt tired even though he just woke up.
"Good morning, how are you feeling?" The nurse in charge of monitoring Sora asked him.
"I'm fine, except for the heaviness in my body." Sora.
"That's to be expected. Your body uses chakra to move and function, the heaviness is due to your body adapting to the lower chakra output." The nurse answered calmly.
"I see. How long has I been asleep?" Sora.
"It's currently 10:25 AM. Your parents have already been called and should arrive here shortly." The nurse.
"That's good. Thanks." Sora.
"You're very welcomed." The nurse smiled as she went to fetch for some food for Sora.
Another nurse entered to keep watch on Sora, and he rested his eyes. He began to feel the differences in his current body. To begin with, the chakra flow was indeed weaker than before.
To put it into perspective, he's been using chakra akin to using a hose but now he's moving the water with his hands alone.
'The breathing technique is helping to guide my chakra more efficiently, but the output and quantity is still small for practical use. I need to kick up a notch on my physical training.' Sora thought as he inspected his body.
'The real problem is that with this quantity of chakra I won't be able to do even the three basic jutsus for graduation. Even though I'm still 4 years early thinking about that, I better address this as fast as possible.' Sora opened his eyes and let out a sigh.
'Well, no use to whine now. Hehe, starting at the top bottom will be hard but it won't be impossible, bring it on world!' Sora grinned.
Just then, Sora's parents, accompanied by Minato, entered the room. All of them exchanged different words about Sora's recovery and the doctor estimated that it would take Sora 2 whole weeks to adapt.
However, Sora refused to let himself do nothing for two whole weeks so se asked about what he could do but the doctors said that anything, but walking was forbidden. Sora isn't a medic, so he won't blindly disobey them but instead decided to walk around the whole village day after day.
He didn't throttle, didn't run, just slow walked the village.
His father also took this opportunity to nurture him in the basic knowledge about smithery. Since he was already hitting the books, Sora decided to study some of the subjects that they teach at the academy.
He found that besides history, every other subject was basically the same albeit extremely outdated. Sora remembered some of the higher equations of his past life since he got a bit obsessed with knowledge for a year or so when he knew he could die at any time.
Even though most of that knowledge he read and listened was on a rush, now his brain remembers them with extreme detail. But he's not planning to give this information away just yet.
After all, a kid producing these things is beyond unnatural so, he'll wait until he's 20 or 30. Without realizing it, the two weeks passed and he resumed his fighting with Minato, who always held back.
After a sparring session, both friends took a break under the tree's shade.
"So, are you excited form tomorrow?" Minato asked Sora.
"Excited? Kinda." Sora answered unbothered.
"Oh, come on, I was expecting a bigger reaction." Minato.
"Well, my body's shape is not looking well. I've seen various kids playing around and I can tell that they're physically superior to myself." Sora.
"Yeah, but your fighting technique is sharper." Minato defended.
"I know, and I'm not loathing myself. I'm just stating the facts. Still, if you ask me if I'd lose against them. I'd say something like "Nah, I'd win." All arrogantly." Sora smiled.
Minat laughs as he pictured the scene and Sora laughs as well. The two friends enjoy their time together before leaving to their respective houses.
Soon after going back home for the last supper without homework, Sora looks at the night sky and smiles.
'Last time, I didn't get to enjoy this as much as I wanted. This time, I'm planning to thrive in this experience.' Sora thought as his eyelids felt heavy and he drift away into sleep.
