Chapter 146: Chapter 145: Preparation
Golden chakra radiated from Namikaze Minato, rippling outward in waves. The vibrant life force it carried was so intense that small sprouts began to emerge from the wooden table and chairs where Sarutobi Hiruzen and Uzumaki Mito had been seated.
Minato looked as though he was wrapped in light—completely enveloped in a warm, golden glow.
The purified Nine-Tails chakra wasn't just stable—it was affecting the environment itself.
For someone like Uzumaki Mito, whose senses were acutely attuned to life force, the change was undeniable. In her perception, Minato's life force had just surged dramatically, blooming with vitality far beyond what someone his age should possess.
"So this is the true power of the Nine-Tails?"
"This warmth, this overflowing life… it's hard to believe this is really the Nine-Tails' chakra."
Maybe Kaien was right. Maybe the Nine-Tails wasn't inherently evil. Maybe it really was just a big, orange fox living quietly in the forest.
Minato understood now—this chakra, purified, was even stronger than it had been before. Without the need to suppress negative emotions, his entire body felt light, empowered. It was a mesmerizing sensation.
But it didn't last. In less than a minute, the chakra vanished completely.
The Nine-Tails' chakra had run out.
Still, Minato didn't feel disappointed. The test had gone well. Once he officially became the Nine-Tails' jinchūriki, he'd have all the time in the world to study and master its power.
Besides, with Kaien's help, he was confident he could handle it.
Maybe he really could find a way to coexist with the Nine-Tails.
This warmth wasn't an illusion—it was real, solid, and unmistakable.
"This chakra—?!"
Sarutobi Hiruzen's eyes widened. The sheer vitality in the air caught him off guard.
The Nine-Tails' chakra could affect the environment like this?
Unbelievable.
"This is the chakra of the Nine-Tails," Mito said softly. "Its warmth is one of the reasons I believe it can be redeemed. Perhaps its nature isn't evil after all."
After decades of living with the Nine-Tails sealed inside her, Mito felt she understood it to some extent.
Even so, what they were about to do… it wasn't fair to the Nine-Tails. But for the sake of Konoha, they had no other choice.
"Minato..." Kushina murmured, her voice low and uncertain. Her lips trembled slightly, but in the end, she said nothing more. Soon, Minato too would have to bear the burden of becoming a "monster."
"There's no need to look like that, Kushina." Minato grinned brightly. "To become the vessel of this power is my honor. If I can use it to protect others, then I'll gladly take on that role."
He didn't see it as a burden. If anything, he was drawn to the power.
And as for being seen as a monster?
What did that matter?
He already had strong bonds—people who knew and cared for him. Even if strangers saw him as a disaster waiting to happen, what difference did it make?
Besides, the Nine-Tails wasn't pure evil. If he could help the villagers accept its power too, then maybe… the monster would become something else—a guardian of Konoha.
Minato believed that, wholeheartedly.
After all, he wasn't walking this path alone.
Before Kushina could respond, Sarutobi Hiruzen burst into laughter. Minato's resolve was more than enough to impress him.
Though, in front of Mito, he quickly reined in his amusement.
Minato truly was a worthy inheritor of the Will of Fire. That unwavering determination—such clarity and strength of will—meant he could not only become the Nine-Tails' host, but also master its power.
Compared to Kushina, Hiruzen saw in Minato a far more resolute spirit. In terms of preparedness, they were worlds apart.
Minato had what it took to compete for the position of Hokage.
That was Hiruzen's conclusion.
With that in mind, he left quickly to convene a meeting of the village's top brass. Now that the Nine-Tails jinchūriki had been decided, it was time to organize personnel and prepare for the transfer.
And yet, the Uchiha… they needed to be handled delicately. The question now was: how to include the Uchiha in the plan without letting their influence grow too large?
Uchiha Kagami and Uchiha Kaien were both Mangekyō Sharingan users aligned with the Hokage's faction. Hiruzen had no intention of sidelining them.
After all, with the Senju clan in decline, the Uchiha were now the strongest clan in Konoha. Provoking them while they still held aspirations for the Hokage's seat would be unwise.
...
Once Hiruzen had gone, only Mito, Kushina, and Minato remained.
After a few more words of guidance, Mito sent the two of them home to prepare. She, meanwhile, returned to refining the details of the transfer plan.
Kushina, having been reassured by Mito, chose to face the future head-on.
It wasn't just a responsibility—it was a means of protecting her. A role she couldn't avoid.
But now, for the first time in a long while, she felt a sliver of comfort.
She wasn't alone anymore. She had someone to walk this road with.
Kushina glanced sideways at Minato, who walked beside her through the sunlit street.
It was only nine in the morning, and the sun shared its light with all equally.
Golden rays danced in Minato's blond hair, making him appear as though wrapped in radiance. Somehow, the sight brought a sting to her eyes.
Tears welled up—not of sorrow, but of release. Of long-held pressure finally easing.
Even if she lost Grandma Mito… she wouldn't lose everything. Not anymore.
Her gaze lingered on Minato, now filled with quiet, unspoken emotion.
But Minato didn't notice.
Today, he had other plans—he was heading to the Uchiha district to keep a promise to Uchiha Kaien.
A week had passed, and most of the Uchiha boys had already finished their sparring matches. Today was for reaping the results.
Minato also wanted to ask Kaien more about the Nine-Tails. Kaien seemed to understand it deeply—he'd even left behind chakra to assist him in advance.
Whether it was to express gratitude or seek answers, Minato knew it was time to visit him.
...
Back in the Hokage's office, Sarutobi Hiruzen had already sent his Anbu operatives to summon all key personnel.
Nara clan head and jōnin squad leader, Hatake Sakumo the White Fang, the three elders, his own student Orochimaru, and his longtime comrade Uchiha Kagami.
Each one either held great power or authority. None were mere bystanders.
This was a true high-level strategy meeting.
