Chapter 131: MSOC: Chapter 131
"Sir, thank you for your kindness. I believe military rations are important to us during this war, and you shouldn't get involved in this," Konan said suddenly. She saw Kai's arrogance but also his attempt to help her.
As soon as she finished speaking, the Three-Tails emerged from Kai's cloak, eyes still blurry with sleep.
"Boss, what's going on? Is there food? These dry pills are making my mouth bitter," the Three-Tails yawned, claws clutching a bag of military rations. It opened the bag and began to eat.
"Ten, twenty, thirty!"
Onlookers watched, horrified, as the Three-Tails devoured the rations. One ration provides a day's worth of food. The Three-Tails had just eaten thirty—enough to burst a human.
"You have more rations, right? Give me two bags. Don't be stingy. You said they're not tasty. I'll make you braised lion heads later," Kai said, rolling his eyes at the Three-Tails' miserliness. He suspected it had picked up bad habits from Kakuzu.
Upon hearing Kai's offer, the Three-Tails quickly handed over three bags.
"Boss, you owe me three meals."
"And can we eat braised beast heads? Should I find some beast and chop off their heads? I'll need seven or eight to be full."
Everyone stared, dumbfounded, at this seemingly delicate creature talking about braised lion heads and needing seven or eight lions. Where did it get this confidence?
Kai rolled his eyes and shoved the Three-Tails back into his cloak, worried it might actually go hunt beast.
Taking the rations, Kai looked at Konan and tossed the bags to her.
"Consider it a gift."
Konan was stunned. No, everyone was stunned. There were at least a hundred rations in each bag—thousands of ryō worth. This was far more than other's offer.
"I... I can't accept this. I'm not that kind of person," Konan said, her face flushing, attempting to return the rations.
But she was interrupted.
"These rations aren't for... that," Kai said, touching his nose. "It's repayment for a favor I owe your teacher, a gesture of support for Akatsuki. If you insist on... that, I won't mind."
During the Third Great Ninja War, Akatsuki, under Nagato, was still focused on peace. Anyone who wanted peace could join, regardless of background. This Akatsuki was far from the powerful organization in the original story. They were a small group in Amegakure, struggling financially. Nagato hadn't awakened his Rinnegan yet.
"Teacher?" Konan was startled. Jiraiya had warned them not to reveal their connection. Danzō would kill them if he knew Jiraiya, one of the Sannin, was training their enemies. Each of Jiraiya's students was powerful—Minato Namikaze being the most prominent example. Danzō wouldn't allow such threats. This was why, in the original story, Danzō had ambushed Nagato during negotiations with Iwagakure.
"Do you know who my teacher is?" Konan asked. Their goal was to surpass Jiraiya. Showing him their achievements was the best reward.
"We can reminisce later. I want to see the artifact. I don't want to stay in this smoky place," Kai said, avoiding the question.
Konan hesitated, but a man stopped her.
"Konan-sama, remember our goal. With that artifact, Akatsuki can establish itself in the shinobi world."
"And this kid just offended many people!"
Konan realized the atmosphere had changed. Many people were glaring at Kai with killing intent.
"Kid, you've got a big mouth. Let's see if you're still alive after the auction," Tsuchigumo said coldly, turning back to the stage.
Kakuzu's expression turned cold. "Boss, should we kill them all? They might have noticed the Three-Tails."
It wasn't Kai's fault; the Three-Tails was too conspicuous, eating dozens of rations. If they knew they were looking at a tailed beast, they wouldn't be so calm.
"No need. The show's just begun," Kai shook his head, smiling, looking towards the stage.
"This auction has had a little excitement, but don't worry. We're nearing the end. You're eager to see the artifact," the tattooed man shouted.
Someone brought up an old box. Everyone held their breath. As the man opened it, their eyes widened.
"You might think it's an ordinary tool, but this is a powerful treasured Tools of the Sage of Six Paths from Kumogakure's former Kinkaku and Ginkaku force—the Banana Palm Fan!" the man said excitedly.
"You might not know Kinkaku and Ginkaku, but the Second Hokage died because of them. That shows how powerful this fan is."
"This is the final item. Bidding starts at one hundred thousand ryō, with increments of at least fifty thousand."
