Chapter 149: MSOC: Chapter 149
"Boss, you say this jutsu is worth fifty million ryō," Kakuzu said flatly, though his unwavering focus on the money was clear. Fifty million for a jutsu? That's either insane or fueled by love.
Konan blushed, lowering her head.
"Kakuzu, fifty million is nothing to you, right?" Kai patted Kakuzu's shoulder. "Once you see this jutsu in action, you'll know if it's worth it."
Seeing Kai remain enigmatic, Kakuzu held his tongue. After all, Kai was the boss, and if the boss was acting on a whim, his subordinates had to follow.
"You want to learn this jutsu?" Konan exclaimed, alarmed. "Nagato said it's A-rank, but for non-Uzumaki, it's at least S-rank. You're strong, but I doubt you can learn it quickly."
"I don't need the money!"
Konan hastily returned the fifty million ryō to Kai. Kuraki and the others tensed; this concerned Akatsuki and the Amegakure refugees. They relaxed slightly when Kai pushed the money back.
"It's late. Let's rest tonight and leave tomorrow," Kai changed the subject. In this world, money wasn't the most important thing; strength was. Kai could easily rob the Daimyo if he wanted. But he had no need, especially with a wealthy subordinate.
Watching Kai leave, Konan froze, clutching the money. She mumbled, "Thank you." Kai simply waved without looking back.
"Konan-sama, we succeeded! The beauty trick worked perfectly," Kuraki whispered.
Konan blushed. "It wasn't a beauty trick. I owe him."
"And what's his relationship with Jiraiya-sensei? Why does he keep helping me?"
Konan fell silent. They'd been hunted, and without Jiraiya, they wouldn't have survived.
"Konan-sama, have you… fallen for him…?" Kuraki blurted out, attracting everyone's attention. Konan, startled, blushed and fled to the camp.
Meanwhile, Kai and Konan separated, and Kakuzu and Hidan caught up. They'd been bickering, but they'd noticed Sasori's messenger crow.
"Boss, what's up with Sasori?" Kakuzu asked.
Hidan raised an eyebrow. "Sasori, the puppet guy? I met him briefly. He seemed to find something interesting and left."
"I thought we'd fight again soon. I didn't expect him to become our companion. He's not acting on a whim like the Boss, is he?"
Kai rolled his eyes. The crow's message revealed Sasori had found a valuable, isolated target.
"Boss, Sasori mentioned someone in his message," Kakuzu said, licking his dry lips. "If it's a valuable head, it'll be exciting."
"Heh, Boss promised I could spread the word of the Jashin god. Let me handle this," Hidan said eagerly. "I was planning to show that puppet guy the power of the Jashin curse, but now I'll have to find someone else."
"He disrespected my art…"
Kai felt the urge to stop Hidan. Sasori was practically invincible with his human puppets. If they fought, Hidan would lose.
"He didn't mention who. Only a scroll and a brief message. This person must be incredibly strong, even stronger than Sasori, who can destroy a country with three hundred puppets," Kai shook his head. "But Sasori's survival skills are top-notch."
In the original story, any of Sasori's human puppets could act as a replacement. As long as his core wasn't destroyed, he could be resurrected endlessly—a more potent ability than Orochimaru's or Kakuzu's. If Sasori hadn't held back in the original story, Sakura and Chiyo would have been killed.
"This scroll likely contains a way to find him. Should we leave now?" Kakuzu checked the time. The daytime battle hadn't exhausted them.
"Delay is dangerous," Kai said, touching his nose. "If Sasori knows we're still here, he'll be furious."
"Let's unseal this scroll!"
Kai placed the scroll on the ground, formed hand seals, and struck it.
Boom!
White mist swirled, revealing a palm-sized puppet crow. Its eyes gleamed, and it flew off.
Kai and the others' eyebrows rose. The puppet crow was likely linked to Sasori's safety. Its urgency suggested its target was dangerous. Hopefully, the sealing jutsu they'd obtained would surprise him.
Morning sunlight bathed the basin. Though they hadn't completed the mission, the fifty million ryō eased Konan's mind, allowing her to sleep soundly.
"Konan, wake up," a familiar voice called, startling her. She crawled out of the tent and saw a familiar face.
"Yahiko, what are you doing here? I wanted to introduce you to someone… Uchiha Kai, the Blood Asura of Konoha…" Konan looked towards Kai's camp, but it was empty.
"Konan, only you were here. Your message said the enemy was too strong," Yahiko frowned, noticing her dejection. "Did you fail?"
"Don't worry. We've made initial contact with the Land of Earth. They're willing to negotiate with Amegakure. The war might stop," he said. Kai would be shocked to hear this; it meant Danzo would soon target Amegakure, allying with Hanzo.
"No!" Konan shook her head. "We failed, but Kai gave us fifty million ryō. I didn't expect them to leave without a word."
