Chapter 194: Chapter 193 - Commander of Camp 12.
[Chapter Size: 2100 Words.]
Third Person POV
Konoha, Year 40.
...
...
Minato entered the main tent of the camp. Inside, he was alone with a desk holding a few documents and some cabinets for storing the most recent records, which the previous camp commander had signed and read.
His days off had passed while Minato visited a few people here and there, with Tsuna being the one he visited the most during his break. But now, with Minato taking command of Camp 12, things would change, as his primary focus would now be administrative work. After all, his time would be mostly spent at that desk to ensure the camp's operations continued smoothly.
He then walked to the desk, sat down in his chair, and began opening the scrolls there, analyzing all the reports, mission data, logistics, human resources, and even the camp's financial resources.
Minato read a few documents and signaled for someone to come to him. Shortly after, a jōnin entered the tent.
"You called for me, Commander?" he asked.
Minato couldn't help but feel a little strange about the title, but he quickly brushed it aside and nodded.
"I need you to gather and deliver all the camp's reports and data from the past years… I want everything in two hours, at most," he requested.
The man nodded and quickly left to fulfill the new commander's request. Minato knew that even though all the documents had been sent to the village, there was always a copy kept in the camp.
Minato returned to studying the scrolls on the desk. Some time later, the ninja returned with a few storage scrolls and delivered all the camp's data within them. Minato thanked him with a nod and asked him to leave.
Minato then gave an order to the tent guards not to disturb him unless it was something important. He created a few clones who began organizing the documents retrieved from the storage, quickly filling the tent. The clones immediately started studying all the available data about the camp.
Even in medieval times, everything was documented: from who was currently on missions and their locations to detailed records of old missions. There were also meticulous inventories of the available kunai, explosive tags, military rations, and other items necessary to keep the camp operational.
Minato spent hours and hours gathering all the information, dedicating the entire day until nightfall to fully understanding the situation. During this time, his original self summoned the leaders of each sector for brief meetings, where he clarified doubts and gathered more details. This process continued until he was exhausted.
Now at night and feeling a bit tired, Minato left to meet the girls during dinner.
"You look quite tired," Hanabi murmured as she saw him join them. He hadn't even made his own food and instead took camp rations like they did.
"I can't say it's an easy job," Minato replied with a tired smile.
"Have you started giving out your first missions yet?" Mikoto asked beside him.
Minato shook his head. "No, not yet. I'll start tomorrow. Today, I spent the day reviewing the camp's records and understanding how the teams stationed here operate. This will help me choose the best missions for them. There's a lot to organize. Jiraiya-sensei left things calmer before heading to the Rain Country on the mission with the other sannin, but there's still work to be done. The war won't last much longer, but the situation still requires attention," he said.
They continued talking about other topics. Hanabi and Mikoto commented on their upcoming missions and training sessions.
The next day, Minato officially began his duties as commander. He selected teams for missions as needed, addressing issues that required his greater attention.
And so a week passed, as Minato adapted to his new routine. He would leave his tent for the command tent and return only to sleep, with no time for himself and often working late into the night. It wasn't an easy job, even in a calmer situation, as demands could arise at any time—during the day, at night, or even in the early hours of the morning—such as when ninjas were ambushed or missions failed.
It was after another week that something a bit more notable happened. Minato was awakened in his tent in the middle of the night by his ninjas, reporting that a wounded group had been escorted from the outpost after suffering an ambush during a mission, and only two had survived.
Minato approached them with a furrowed brow as several jōnins gathered around.
"He is not doing well! Take him directly to the medical camp!" Minato instructed a man missing an arm, who had returned from a skirmish with the Rain Village. The team's medic ninja had also survived and managed to stop the bleeding; thanks to this, they survived.
"But... we failed the mission and lost the scroll..." said the medic ninja, his tone somber, clearly shaken by the mission's failure, the loss of two teammates, and the condition of his injured comrade.
"Unfortunately, yes, you did fail. But there's nothing we can do about that now. Go rest. We'll talk about this tomorrow," Minato said, trying to ease the tension. The man, embarrassed, only nodded and began to leave while his companion was being taken to the medical camp by other ninjas.
"Wait... both of you, I'll teleport the injured ninja along with one of you. Let them know what happened," Minato said. He first turned back to the group and selected one, using the Flying Thunder God technique to teleport himself, the chosen ninja, and the injured man for quicker treatment.
Then he returned to the shaken medic ninja. "Can you tell me exactly where you were ambushed?" Minato asked, his expression serious.
"It was near the outpost, about 5 kilometers to the north. There was no one following us, and we made sure of that... I don't know how they appeared..." the man murmured, frustrated and dejected.
'To the north...' Minato pondered this and turned to one of the most well-informed jōnins among the group. "Do we have any records of Stone ninjas' activity in the Land of Waterfalls recently?" he asked, recalling the attacks at the beginning of the war, when Stone ninjas had used the Land of Waterfalls as a route for assaults against Konoha.
"We don't know about that, sir. We've had reports that Jiraiya-sensei had a conversation with the country's leaders. They assured us they wouldn't let any Earth ninjas pass and that they would remain neutral," the jōnin replied, while Minato reflected on the situation.
"I don't think that's exactly what's happening... In any case, wait here. I'm going to take a closer look," Minato said, disappearing in an instant before anyone could react.
Minato had been strengthening the range of his abilities in recent days, preparing for emergency situations. He had placed seals all over the camp area and even in the Rain Country, ensuring he could act quickly if necessary.
When he reappeared, the sky was even darker with the clouds of a rainy midnight in the Land of Rain, with a light drizzle falling. Minato advanced to the area indicated by the ninja, searching for traces of the ambush. Using his observation abilities, he easily found the battle site and one of the dead jōnins from the team.
First, Minato teleported the body back to the camp so his ninjas could handle it properly. Then, he returned north. "They shouldn't be too far..." he murmured, calculating the time since the attack. It had only been two hours, and he knew he could catch up with them.
Ascending to a certain altitude, Minato let his body shine for a moment before using the power of the Pika Pika no Mi to disappear, advancing in a straight line northward, illuminating the sky. "I don't need to hide anymore..." he thought. He advanced quickly until he found the Stone ninjas.
Minato reappeared suddenly, lighting up the area and startling the enemies with his sudden presence as they were returning from their ambush mission. But Minato didn't care about their stunned faces and didn't waste time. In an instant, he began taking down the opponents one by one, avoiding killing them. They would be taken as prisoners.
He simply retrieved the bodies, recovered the scroll lost by Konoha's team, and returned to the camp shortly after. The teams were already there, looking at Minato in surprise. After all, it had barely been 20 minutes since he had left, and now he simply reappeared with the defeated Stone ninjas.
"Take them south. They must be interrogated for information. I want details about their routes and whether the Land of Waterfalls is involved," Minato said. The ninjas quickly nodded and carried the unconscious bodies away.
"Anyway, I'm going to sleep." Seeing that everything was resolved, he decided to return to his tent, leaving the rest to be handled the next day.
The next morning, he began rereading more reports at his desk. It was a somewhat tedious but necessary task. He reviewed missions, logged teams, and recorded deaths or disappearances during field operations.
"How can I try to change this?" Minato murmured to himself. Even though the mortality rate had significantly decreased since medics were assigned to every team, which had greatly changed the war, there were still substantial losses.
This made him take a kunai out of his pocket. "I have enough chakra to travel back and forth across the country without tiring anymore, which is very different from how it was at the start. I'm just stockpiling chakra by staying idle here... Maybe there's a way to be more efficient," he murmured, lost in thought, reaching a decision.
Summoning a few jōnins, he requested the entire camp to gather. He announced that he had an important meeting. Once everyone was present, Minato appeared before the crowd of over 800 people who were part of the camp.
"Well, as you know, I've been in command of this camp for a few weeks. I still feel guilty about the losses we face daily, and I would like to change that," Minato began.
The ninjas present murmured among themselves, many skeptical about how he could change such a situation. After all, war was war, and no matter who the commander was, deaths were inevitable.
"What do you mean by that, Commander?" a ninja raised his voice, visibly curious.
Thinking for a moment, Minato answered by showing his kunai. "I believe this can help teams in danger. Starting today, I want you to carry this kunai during your missions. By channeling chakra into it, it will send an alert directly to me, and I'll be able to teleport to the location. Of course, I won't do this with my main body, but I'll send a clone instead."
The ninjas were shocked. "You mean the Commander will personally help teams in danger?" a chūnin murmured, still surprised by the proposal.
"As I said, it won't be me personally, but a clone. However, it will have enough chakra to assist you. If the clone fails, I can come personally, as the information will reach me the moment the clone disappears. This will allow me to decide whether I can help without compromising another emergency," Minato explained to everyone.
"That's incredible, Commander. If you can do this, we might have even fewer casualties," one of the jōnins commented, impressed.
Minato nodded. "Anyway, I want you to pick up the kunai from my tent later. They'll be made available to everyone. Remember: use them only in emergencies. Are we clear?" he said, looking at the crowd.
Everyone nodded, showing approval and respect for the plan. With Minato's reputation, this strategy had a good chance of success.
Afterward, he returned to his tent, where he needed to assign some missions and prepare the kunai with seals. Additionally, he would send this information to the outpost, dispatching jōnins to explain the situation in person.
Minato hoped this new strategy would work, waiting to be called for the first emergencies. However, the following week brought even more important news: the results of the interrogation of the Stone ninjas he had captured. It seemed there really was a route passing through the Land of Waterfalls.
"Well, it looks like I'll have to handle this myself," Minato said as he began assembling a team.
He decided to request a meeting with the leader of the Land of Waterfalls. It was necessary to address the situation, either treating the country as neutral or as an enemy if they were indeed collaborating with the Stone Village. Minato knew he needed to act quickly and report the situation to the Hokage. After all, they couldn't afford a breach in the north that could leave them vulnerable to attacks.
