Chapter 380: 379-A Dance
The night air was crisp, carrying the faint scent of the damp earth as Renjiro and Kushina stood across from each other in the secluded training ground. The moon cast a pale glow over the clearing, illuminating the dozens of old training dummies, torn targets, and deep scars in the ground—evidence of years of intense battles fought here.
Kushina's private training ground was a hidden gem within the forests of Konoha, far enough that no one would disturb them, but close enough that they could return to the village quickly if needed. This was a recent freedom the Hokage had granted her.
Kushina rolled her shoulders, a smirk in place as she wiped her thumb across the edge of a kunai, drawing a fresh line of blood. Renjiro, standing a few meters away, mimicked the motion, though a little slower, still adjusting to the idea of deliberately injuring himself for combat. It wasn't that it hurt, it was just strange.
"Alright," Kushina called out, spinning the kunai in her fingers. "The only rule is no chakra-powered jutsu—just blood fūinjutsu and a little taijutsu. Try to keep up."
Renjiro narrowed his eyes, activating his Sharingan with a quiet hum of power. The world sharpened instantly—Kushina's stance, the faint flicker of her muscles as she prepared to move, the way her blood dripped at a steady rhythm from her fingertips.
Then she vanished.
A blur of red streaked across his vision as Kushina closed the distance with a speed that made his breath catch. Renjiro barely had time to sidestep before her kunai slashed through the space where his chest had been moments before.
'Too fast.'
He twisted, bringing his own kunai up to parry, but instead of meeting steel, his Sharingan caught the flicker of a seal forming mid-air—lines of blood weaving into a compact spiral just as Kushina flicked her fingers.
"Sealing Snare!"
The ground beneath Renjiro's feet lit up. He barely had a second to leap away before the seal was completed, and thick black chains erupted from the earth, snapping shut like a steel jaw. They barely missed his ankle as he flipped backwards, landing in a low crouch.
Kushina grinned. "Not bad. But you're too slow with your seals."
Renjiro gritted his teeth. She was right. His hands still hesitated too much, and the delay in his own blood-forming the seal left him vulnerable. Kushina, on the other hand, barely seemed to pause—her seals flowed from her blood as if they were second nature.
No time to think. She was already moving again.
Kushina darted forward, flipping over him mid-air and slamming her palm into the ground. A complex web of red lines pulsed to life beneath her hand, and the moment she landed, the air around them shifted.
"Binding Field!"
Renjiro felt it immediately—his movements stiffened, his body feeling as if he had suddenly been caught in invisible chains. Not a paralysis seal, but something that hindered his natural agility.
Kushina didn't waste time. She lunged, aiming for his side. He twisted, barely dodging her strike, but her foot came up, catching him hard in the ribs. The impact sent him skidding across the dirt, dust kicking up in his wake.
He rolled with it, hands already moving. If speed was the problem, then he had to adapt.
His Sharingan flickered, tracing the exact way Kushina formed her seals—how she shaped the blood mid-motion, not after stopping like he did.
Kushina saw the change immediately.
"Oh?"
Renjiro didn't answer. He slashed his palm open again, ignoring the sting, and pushed his chakra into his blood—while moving.
The seal formed even as he slid to a stop.
"Repelling Mark!"
A wave of force blasted outward from his position, sending Kushina skidding back with a surprised grunt. The second she landed, he was already on her, flicking his fingers in a quick motion.
"Blood Lock!"
A thin thread of blood shot from his palm, aiming straight for Kushina's ankle. If he could mark her with his seal, he could slow her movements down.
But Kushina was already reacting.
"Seal Disrupt!"
A burst of chakra shattered the blood thread before it could make contact.
Renjiro didn't falter. He lunged in with a feint, making it seem as though he was about to engage in taijutsu, but his real goal was different. As Kushina shifted to block him, his blood trailed behind his fingers, forming a mark mid-swing.
"Blood Binds Blood!"
His hand brushed against her wrist—just a graze—but it was enough. The seal latched on, glowing faintly.
For the first time, Kushina paused.
Renjiro smirked. "Got you."
Kushina raised an eyebrow before glancing at her wrist, where his seal pulsed against her skin.
"Huh," she mused, flexing her fingers. "You're getting better."
The seal would restrict her movements slightly, forcing her to use more energy to counteract it. A small victory, but still a victory.
Kushina rolled her shoulders and then grinned.
"But not good enough."
With a sudden surge of chakra, her blood seal flared, and Renjiro barely had time to brace before his own blood rebelled against him.
"Blood Rejection Seal!"
A force slammed into his chest—his own blood rejecting his chakra, severing the flow for a fraction of a second. His body seized, a sharp pain flashing through his veins, and in that instant of weakness—
Kushina moved.
One second, she was standing across from him. The next, her kunai was an inch from his throat.
Silence.
Renjiro exhaled sharply. "…I lost."
Kushina smirked, the edge of her kunai still hovering near Renjiro's throat. The air between them was thick with exertion, their breathing heavy from the battle.
She then withdrew the kunai and ruffled his hair roughly. "Damn right, you did. But you did way better than I expected."
Renjiro scowled, swatting her hand away. His Sharingan deactivated, and his body immediately felt the weight of exhaustion settle in. Blood fūinjutsu was more draining than he had anticipated—not in terms of chakra, but in the sheer toll it took on his body. His limbs felt heavier, his breath came shorter, and the dull ache of the self-inflicted wounds on his palms pulsed in the back of his mind.
Kushina chuckled as she wiped the remaining blood off her hands, her wound already sealing shut. "You're starting to get it, though. The trick isn't just speed—it's fluidity. You can't think of fūinjutsu as something you do after you move. You have to weave it into your fighting style, like a dance."
Renjiro exhaled through his nose, rolling his shoulders to shake off the lingering effects of her last seal. "I was flowing," he grumbled, wiping some of the dried blood off his forearm. "Right into your damn trap."
Kushina burst into laughter, loud and unrestrained, clapping him on the back with enough force to make him stumble forward. "Damn right, you did! But you almost had me there. That last seal of yours was clever."
Renjiro straightened, letting out a short breath. "Not clever enough."
Kushina tilted her head, her wild red hair catching the breeze. "Give it time. You're already getting better at forming them mid-motion. Most people struggle for months just to get to that stage. If you keep training, you'll get fast enough to weave them as naturally as breathing."
