Chapter 52: Chapter 52: There are Differences Between Teachers Too
"It's like this: this morning during class, I conducted an in-class practical exam." Muyue told Tanimura Toshihiro what had happened in class. However, Muyue slightly sugarcoated the students' complaints, otherwise, they would have been too aggressive.
"I just wanted to motivate them to train more seriously, but I didn't expect this to happen, I'm truly sorry," Muyue said with an apologetic expression. "It's my fault for being too harsh in my evaluations; I should have been more lenient with them." Muyue took all the blame upon himself.
Although it was Tanimura Toshihiro's own poor teaching level that led to the students' dissatisfaction, Muyue merely ignited it. However, Muyue didn't want his persona to show any flaws, so he chose to tell Tanimura Toshihiro everything directly, admitting his mistake and saying that he accidentally caused trouble with good intentions. This way, no matter how clearly the whole story was laid out, Muyue would not be seen as someone with ulterior motives. After all, he had informed Tanimura Toshihiro immediately after the incident; how could someone so concerned about a colleague have any ill intentions?
"This..." Tanimura Toshihiro was momentarily at a loss for words. In his heart, he knew that what the students said was true; his teaching level was indeed not as good as Muyue's, it was quite ordinary. But no one at the Ninja Academy could compare to Muyue. He was a new teacher who became known throughout the school within a month or two, gaining the recognition of all teachers and students, and even being summoned and praised by the Third Hokage. For an ordinary teacher like him to compare himself to Muyue was simply asking for trouble.
"I've already told them not to speak ill of you, but they are just children, so it's hard to say how they'll truly behave despite promising on the surface," Muyue sighed, his gaze towards Tanimura Toshihiro filled with apology.
"It's fine, I won't mind. After all, they're just six-year-old kids," Tanimura Toshihiro said with a chuckle. Even if students complained to his face, Tanimura Toshihiro wouldn't give up his position as the taijutsu teacher for Class 1-1. This was because Class 1-1's practical exam results were excellent; they not only secured the top two spots in the grade's practical skills, but their class's average practical score also led the entire first year. Although he knew that such results had nothing to do with his teaching, these were concrete achievements, so there was no need to worry about performance reviews, and his bonuses would only increase.
"Teacher Hanyu, I know you; you're definitely thinking for the students," Tanimura Toshihiro expressed that he understood Muyue's good intentions. Even though this unexpected situation occurred, Tanimura Toshihiro still felt that Muyue was a genuinely kind colleague who immediately informed him and apologized when something happened. Originally, the morning class was Tanimura Toshihiro's taijutsu class, but he had something to do that morning and swapped with Muyue, who had an afternoon class. Muyue readily agreed at the time. He had also heard about Muyue covering classes for other teachers. He himself would find it difficult to do so; once or twice was fine, but if teachers asked every week, who could handle that?
With high teaching standards, leading his class to the best grades in the entire year, being praised by the Third Hokage, and being handsome and good-tempered, Tanimura Toshihiro could only admit that there was a reason why the female teachers in the office talked about Muyue every day. He knew his own situation. Tanimura Toshihiro knew the root cause of this was that his teaching was indeed mediocre, and it had been like that for many years. But Tanimura Toshihiro was not going to voluntarily give up his position as the taijutsu teacher for Class 1-1. Teaching at the Ninja Academy was precisely about earning money without danger; this was a chance to lie back and collect substantial bonuses.
"Teacher Tanimura, I'm relieved to hear you think that way," Muyue seemed much more relaxed and showed a gentle smile.
"Haha, let's go drinking at an izakaya sometime," Tanimura Toshihiro also said with a laugh. Muyue smiled and nodded, and after chatting about some meaningless topics with Tanimura Toshihiro, he found an excuse to leave.
After Tanimura Toshihiro returned to the office, a female colleague nearby asked curiously, "Teacher Tanimura, was Teacher Hanyu looking for you for something?"
"Nothing important, just some minor matters between students. But Teacher Hanyu is truly a commendable person," Tanimura Toshihiro said as he sat down. He was naturally embarrassed to talk about his poor teaching skills being criticized by students, but it was a good way to start a conversation with the female teachers by bringing up Muyue.
When the class bell rang, Tanimura Toshihiro walked towards Class 1-1. Entering the classroom, Tanimura Toshihiro felt no different than before. As usual, he first explained some theoretical knowledge of taijutsu, then took the students out for a run. After the run, Tanimura Toshihiro began to teach taijutsu forms, and after one demonstration, he let the students practice freely.
"Teacher Tanimura, can you demonstrate a few more times? I didn't quite understand it," Anko asked.
"These are all the most basic techniques. If you don't understand, it's because you haven't practiced enough. Just practice more," Tanimura Toshihiro said.
"But Muyue-sensei demonstrates many times every time he teaches us, and he breaks it down very meticulously!" Anko retorted.
"Ninjutsu and taijutsu can't be compared," Tanimura Toshihiro explained.
"But aren't there many practical tips and details in taijutsu too? Shouldn't those be explained in detail?" Kotetsu Hagane asked.
Tanimura Toshihiro was speechless. As a slacking Chunin teacher, where would he get so many practical details and techniques? He just gave a perfunctory reply. Then, a large number of students started asking all sorts of questions and making various suggestions.
"Stop, stop, stop! You guys train first, then ask questions next class, okay?" Being bombarded with questions from dozens of people at once, Tanimura Toshihiro felt his head was about to explode.
"Teacher Tanimura, how about we all meet halfway? We won't ask questions, and you don't teach us anymore," Izumo Kamizuki suggested.
Tanimura Toshihiro had a bewildered look, thinking,
Are students this bold now, directly telling the teacher not to teach anymore?
But more aggressive comments were yet to come.
"Teacher Tanimura, I think you should retire early. After learning your shuriken throwing, I haven't hit the bullseye once."
"Teacher Tanimura, ever since taking your taijutsu class, the entire grade praises our class for how well we learn ninjutsu."
Listening to the students' aggressive words, Tanimura Toshihiro was somewhat dumbfounded. He had been teaching for over three years, and this was the first time he had encountered such a situation. He mused that the classes he taught before didn't particularly like him either, but it never reached this point. Tanimura Toshihiro was grateful that Muyue had warned him beforehand; otherwise, he would have been completely confused about what was happening.
"Cough, cough, everyone quiet down. I'll demonstrate a few more times," Tanimura Toshihiro coughed twice and said helplessly. Then Tanimura Toshihiro discovered something interesting: the students were dissatisfied with him, but their training didn't stop. In fact, they seemed even more serious than before. He was a bit bewildered, logically speaking, if they disliked him so much, why were they still training so actively? Tanimura Toshihiro felt that Muyue's words had worked, causing the students to not slack off in their training despite their dissatisfaction with him. Tanimura Toshihiro felt somewhat fortunate and also envied Muyue's control over his class.
"I'll just get through this year," Tanimura Toshihiro didn't want to give up his position as the taijutsu teacher for Class 1-1; he might even get a good teacher award. In a normal class, if students spoke to him like that, he would immediately teach a few of them a lesson, showing them the strength of a Chunin. But this was Class 1-1, the class with the best grades in the entire school. The more Tanimura Toshihiro taught, the more the students realized that his teaching level was indeed poor, strengthening their resolve to replace him.
