Chapter 9: Chapter 9 : Chakra, Coup And Desperation
Rows of shelves loomed like silent sentinels, the scent of ink and aging parchment heavy in the air.
Sukuna moved between them with purpose, his sharp eyes scanning every title. The soft thud of his sandals echoed off the wooden floors as he gathered scrolls and tomes he was here for.
The Ninja Academy had a library, but not many used it. It made sense since most shinobi weren't too bookish. However, the place had its own charm.
The place was filled with history. The Third Great Shinobi War, Second Great Shinobi War, First Great Shinobi War, and even the times of the Warring States. Everything was here.
At least, the most heavily edited version of history, painted to make Konoha look sacred.
However, Sukuna wasn't here for that. Hardly anyone was, and he wasn't about to break that tradition.
What he was here for was chakra.
He found a corner far from the curious stares of other students and laid out his findings across the table. His fingers, calloused from training, unrolled the first scroll with care. "Chakra: The Source of All Shinobi Techniques." A basic title—basic enough to start with.
Thanks to Lee, he got access to the three basic academic jutsu early.
The three academic jutsu were Transformation, Substitution, and Clone Jutsu, which also happened to be the passing requirement for academy students.
He asked Lee just to see whether he could use ninjutsu. While he knew that what he had was cursed energy, he had a flicker of hope that maybe, perhaps, cursed energy could substitute chakra and let him perform jutsu.
His hopes didn't last long.
Cursed energy is distinctly different from chakra.
But then the question arose: what was letting others use chakra and not him? While it was true he had Sukuna's power and a powerful system not from this world, he was born here, wasn't he?
By birthright, he should possess chakra. Like everyone in this world does. Even animals possess chakra, so him not having it was absurd at best.
Unfortunately, he never got around to looking for answers. Partly because he didn't have the resources or connections to get someone's help, and partly because he was too busy getting good at what he could do.
The first year of the academy didn't have anything related to ninjutsu outside theory, so he didn't bother. However, from this year, the real shinobi course was starting.
"It's not even like I can ask someone for help. No one's gonna believe I don't have chakra. Everyone has chakra—that's a de facto rule of this world. I'd be in more trouble if someone actually found out I got no chakra.
That could escalate real fast." He clicked his tongue in annoyance. He was alone in his plight.
Sukuna devoured the contents quickly. Chakra was formed by the physical energy present in every cell of the body combined with spiritual energy gained through experience and meditation. When refined properly, it allowed one to mold elemental nature and perform jutsu.
He leaned back slightly, brows furrowed. Wondering…
If chakra was born of the body and spirit, why couldn't he mold it? Didn't he check all the boxes?
"The only thing different about me is cursed energy." That was his obvious and first response. Nothing else made more sense as to why he couldn't use chakra. Was the existence of cursed energy stopping chakra perhaps?
"However, that chunin at the academy entrance test did mistake cursed energy for chakra," he muttered with a frown. This was another reason he thought that cursed energy could be used instead of chakra to perform ninjutsu. Of course, he was wrong.
He moved to the next scroll—an introduction to chakra natures. Fire, wind, lightning, earth, water. The five elements. Then advanced notes on combining elements: wood, ice, lava. All fascinating. All irrelevant.
Nature transformation was useless for him if he couldn't even figure out chakra molding.
"Heh, I bet more students would visit this place if these scrolls had a few jutsu for nature transformation and not just theory…" He smirked.
He wasn't here for that though, so back to the topic. What he needed was understanding yin and yang.
Kishimoto took the concept from the real world. Yin and Yang energy exists, and it exists inside everyone. Even back on Earth.
The only thing supernatural about this world is that people could infuse yin and yang to make chakra.
Chakra too is a concept that exists in the real world. Kishimoto took inspiration from many places, but that chakra and the chakra in the ninja world are different.
Here, chakra is more like magic, giving humans superhuman abilities.
"I too should have Yin and Yang energy in me. So molding is the concept I have to figure out. Once I know more details, then I can go around seeing where I'm getting stuck."
The next scroll held promise—"The Duality of Chakra: Yin and Yang." Sukuna's eyes narrowed as he read.
Yin chakra governed imagination, thought, genjutsu. Yang controlled vitality, life force, physical power. Together, they shaped form and breathed life into it. Medical ninjutsu relied heavily on Yang. Genjutsu on Yin. Their balance was essential.
But the scroll was frustratingly vague. No diagrams. No in-depth analysis. No real explanation of how to manipulate either type independently.
He grit his teeth. Was it a lack of chakra that kept him from understanding this part of the system? Or was this knowledge deliberately hidden—kept for higher-level shinobi?
Either way, he knew one thing.
Cursed energy was born of negative emotions—of hatred, pain, anger. It was shaped by will, not balance.
By the end of his research, he couldn't find anything solid. There wasn't anything about Yin chakra and Yang chakra. Much about Yin and Yang energy, but not chakra.
Though Sukuna did understand that even nature chakra transformation was high-level stuff, let alone yin and yang release, which hardly anyone could do. He wouldn't be finding it here in the academy.
"Sigh…" he was frustrated.
All his disappointment and frustration originated from the original sin itself.
Weakness…
Yes, he has Sukuna's power. Yes, Sukuna is the strongest character in Jujutsu Kaisen. But Sukuna is nothing in the Naruto world.
Sukuna scales close to most Kage-level shinobi. With his domain, Sukuna scales higher. However, that's it.
By the end of Naruto, Kage-level shinobi, arguably the strongest ninja a village could have—basically the top 1%—become cannon fodder.
It was ridiculous how much stronger characters get introduced later in the series that even Kage-level shinobi lose their significance.
How was he to live in a world like this?
He wasn't looking into chakra because he wanted to do some cool ninjutsu or pass the academy test—which he did want to, but that was irrelevant in the grand scheme.
He was doing this to get stronger.
It was clear to him that Ryomen Sukuna's peak wasn't that impressive according to this world, and he doubted he would be reaching Sukuna's peak height anytime soon. It could take him years.
Years which he didn't have. In just 10 years—only a decade—the biggest war this world had seen would ruin everything. God-level characters would come back to life.
And that was the endgame. There were many more things that took place in between. He needed to get stronger.
Sukuna's power alone wasn't enough.
As he found himself walking back from the academy, mind troubled, he caught some shadows flickering from the side of his eye.
"Anbu."
There were many just jumping from rooftop to rooftop. It was pretty common. Watching them go, he suddenly remembered a bold idea he had once.
An outright terrible idea, which he joked off as soon as it originated inside his mind back then. However, now it didn't feel so bad.
"I need power…" he muttered.
Meanwhile, at this time—
In the quiet of the Hokage's office, Shisui Uchiha stood before the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi. The air was tense. Hiruzen watched the young Uchiha with careful eyes as Shisui bowed respectfully.
"I need to tell you something important, Lord Third," Shisui said calmly. "It's about my Mangekyō Sharingan… and the power it holds."
Hiruzen stiffened at this. He didn't even know that Shisui had the Mangekyō.
Horrible images of the past came to his mind. One man who riled up the entire world on his own with these eyes.
Suppressing his emotions, Hiruzen leaned forward, curious but cautious. "Go on."
Shisui hesitated, then continued, "My eye technique is called Kotoamatsukami. It allows me to enter someone's mind and change their thoughts… without them even knowing. I want to use it for peace."
Hiruzen's eyes shrank. That was a terrible power. A sudden fear rose inside him. He couldn't say whether he was being controlled right now or not.
However, for Shisui to tell him this meant he didn't intend to use it without permission.
"To change someone's mind without them realizing? That's… dangerous."
Shisui nodded. "I know. But I don't see any other way. The Uchiha clan is growing more hostile toward the village. The hardliner faction is gaining power. I don't see any other way to prevent a coup from happening besides this. I came to you because I want your permission—to use it on the clan head."
"Fugaku?" Hiruzen asked with hesitation. That was drastic. However, the boy had merit. There really didn't seem to be any other way to stop the Uchiha hardliner faction from launching a coup at this point.
"Yes," Shisui said. "If I use Kotoamatsukami on him, I can stop it before it begins. He'll believe it's his own decision to step back from conflict."
Hiruzen was silent for a moment, weighing the words. Deep down, he didn't like the idea of using such a power. It reminded him of how fragile free will could be. Not to mention, he doubted that Fugaku's decision alone would sway the Uchiha clan. If it did, then this entire coup d'état problem wouldn't have grown this large to begin with. At least according to his knowledge, Fugaku was from the dovish faction. He too wanted peace between the village and the clan. But… right now, even he saw no other option. If this meant avoiding war, bloodshed, and chaos… he understood the need.
"I believe you, Shisui," Hiruzen said finally. "If your heart is true, then perhaps this is the best way to keep peace. But be careful. Don't let others know about this ability."
Unfortunately, he did let someone know. The very person he shouldn't have.
Danzo Shimura…
Once the talk with Hiruzen was over, Shisui was recalled back to the Root base.
As he passed by, Sukuna, who was right now enjoying some ramen on Naruto's expense, felt something.
He turned his head and saw a fading shadow.
Sukuna pursed his lips and fell into deep thought.
Since he started diving more into Sukuna's memories, he had become much more power-hungry and scheming. At least, he felt that he had started to think that way.
This plan of his, which he'd come up with, was the pinnacle of that insanity he'd grown used to from Sukuna's memories.
"Going through with the plan would be putting my life at complete risk. But if I succeed, then the rewards could immediately skyrocket my power." He was torn between taking the risk or playing it safe.
Currently, he didn't see any other way to get stronger outside his cursed energy and cursed technique. Something he personally didn't think he could use to surpass the person he had been modeling himself after.
Reaching Ryomen Sukuna's level would be hard even after having all his knowledge. And knowing that it's still just the Kage level made him demotivated.
However, this was his chance. Probably his only chance to get stronger. At least get an assurance that he could survive in this world.
If he lost this chance, then he wouldn't have it again.
He unconsciously looked back in the same direction with complication.
"Fuck…
