Chapter 8: Chapter 8: Experiments Begin
Two months later.
On a large island in the southern region of the Land of Water, buried beneath thick mist and silence, there was a hidden cave embedded deep inside the cliffs.
It was far from the main continent, surrounded by mountains and forests so dense and steep, even birds had second thoughts about flying over.
There was only one town on the island... just a cluster of buildings meant to issue missions.
Other than that, it was dead quiet. Mist shinobi barely visited this place, making it perfect for Obito's next step.
Inside that shadowy cave, a bunch of twisted experimental gear had been set up, built from scrap parts and modified tools Zetsu "borrowed" from various Mist labs.
Obito stood still, his eyes calm, scanning the five Mist ninjas kneeling in front of him... dull-eyed, limp like puppets.
"Alright, let's see what happens now..."
He lifted his hand slightly and whoosh the Devouring Coffin appeared in front of him with a low hum, the edges still laced with faint purple lines from its last use.
A blood-red item that dissolved inside when eaten floated out from within the coffin's center, glowing faintly.
He caught it, turned around, and shoved it directly into the mouth of one of the Mist ninja like he was feeding a damn goldfish.
"Swallow it," he ordered flatly.
The man obeyed like clockwork, throat twitching as the item slid down.
Then, Obito took a step back.
He folded his arms, eyes focused.
This item was made from the corpse of a Kaguya clan shinobi, one who had awakened the Shikotsumyaku, that lovely little Dead Bone Pulse bloodline.
In other words, if this worked, this test subject was about to become a bone-launching freak with regenerative powers.
A few seconds ticked by.
The Mist ninja began to twitch violently.
Veins bulged across his face and neck like snakes under skin, and his chest started swelling unnaturally fast.
Then...
BOOM!
The dude straight up exploded. Like a fucking water balloon full of blood and guts. Gore splattered all over the cave walls like Jackson Pollock took a paintbrush made of intestines to the place.
Obito, who instinctively raised an arm to shield his face, stared at the corpse or what was left of it with a blank face for a moment.
"…Tch. Wasted."
A low sigh escaped him. Not out of sympathy or guilt but pure annoyance at a failed experiment.
Maybe this world had changed him...more then he even realised.
His voice was casual, but internally...
'Damn it. That was one of the better bodies too. Thought the chakra threshold would hold.'
This wasn't the first failure either.
Over the past two months, White Zetsu had been doing top-tier corpse collection duty.
Slipping into battlefields unnoticed, digging out corpses with bloodlines, and hauling them back for Obito to process. He'd gathered over a dozen so far.
The goal was simple: can a bloodline be transferred by feeding someone an item formed by the Devouring Coffin?
The answer so far?
Fuck no.
"Is it because of spiritual power?"
Obito narrowed his eyes, rubbing his chin, deep in thought.
Something wasn't adding up.
'I've already used three items like this on myself and didn't explode. No swelling, no pain. Hell, I even felt amazing afterward. So what gives?'
Was it the natural energy? Or was it something else entirely... maybe it had to do with that weird cosmic fusion that turned him into something no longer 100% human?
'Maybe… it's because I'm fucking built different now.'
Still, this needed data. So Obito decided to go the other way.
He took out another item that dissolved inside when eaten, this time not from a Kekkai Genkai user, but from a plain-ass ninja.
Yeah. One of those no-talent, cannon-fodder types.
Obito had actually gone out of his way to personally slaughter a few of them just to make some control test material.
"Let's see what average chakra garbage does to you," Obito muttered as he shoved the new item into another Mist ninja's mouth.
The guy swallowed it like a stale rice cracker.
His body started trembling... not violently like before, but noticeably.
Veins popped up across his arms, some sweat beaded on his forehead, but most importantly... no explosion.
'Well, that's a fucking improvement.'
Obito didn't relax just yet. He stood there, arms folded, watching the subject like a hawk.
After about thirty long-ass minutes, the ninja's body began to settle down.
No blood.
No bones flying out.
No organs on the walls.
Just… stillness.
Obito slowly walked forward and had Zetsu help strap the guy to one of the machines rigged from stolen Mist tech and broken Konoha medical tools.
He tapped the screen, read a few chakra readings, then placed his palm over the ninja's chest to check cell activity the old-school way—chakra sense.
"…Huh."
He raised a brow.
"There's a noticeable increase in strength… cell activity's up too. Dude's not exactly on Senju-tier, but this asshole's definitely more alive than before."
Obito moved to another reading.
"Vitality is rising… chakra pool looks just slightly denser than it was at baseline."
The results weren't earth-shattering, but for a first non-lethal reaction?
That was huge.
A sick little grin curled up on Obito's face as he stood up and stared at the groggy Mist ninja strapped to the chair.
"You'll do."
He walked over to a dusty corner and grabbed a clipboard White Zetsu made from bark and duct tape.
Then with a red marker, he scrawled across the page:
Subject 1 – Alive. Minimal enhancement. Will monitor for delayed effects.
"Congratulations," Obito said aloud, looking at the dazed ninja.
"You're officially not a complete failure."
