Chapter 55: Chapter 55: The Blood Bank
It had already been two months since Kushina became the jinchūriki.
Her missions were completely canceled—she didn't even have to take on any assignments anymore. In return, she received a fixed monthly allowance.
She knew perfectly well why this was the case, but she had no choice.
After all, her identity now was no longer the same. As the jinchūriki, this was something she simply had to endure.
Thankfully, with Namikaze Minato and Gekko Chizan around, she didn't feel as lonely as she otherwise might have.
...
Gekko Chizan's house.
"Is Sunagakure fun?"
"I've never seen yellow sand before... what's that even like?"
"If it's all sand, how do you guys even survive there? Don't you run out of water?"
Kushina sat with Pakura, sipping tea and nibbling on sweets.
"What's so great about sand anyway? Compared to Konoha, it's not even close. But there is an underground river beneath Sunagakure."
"So no, we're not short on water."
It only took one day for Kushina and Pakura to go from strangers to friends.
After all, in some ways, their situations were remarkably similar.
One wasn't allowed to leave the village. The other wasn't allowed to leave the village either. Not exactly the same, but close enough to call it identical.
Pakura was stunned when she learned the girl before her was the jinchūriki.
Likewise, Kushina was just as shocked when she found out Pakura was a Sunagakure kunoichi—brought back by Gekko Chizan himself.
And so, after a full day of chatting and sharing, the two smoothly became friends.
"So that bastard Chizan went to see his teacher again?"
"Yeah. Said he was working on some kind of research—super secretive stuff."
Pakura scolded Chizan with an annoyed tone. She thought: He promised to show her around Konoha, but the excitement only lasted three days. Three days! And then he vanished!
"Hmph, men really can't be trusted! Minato also said he'd keep me company, and what does he do? Turns around and runs off on a mission."
"Hmph. Why don't we go shopping?"
Kushina was the kind of person who couldn't sit still. Asking her to stay quietly in one place was worse than a death sentence.
"Huh? Just the two of us? Is that... okay?"
"I mean, with my identity..."
Truthfully, Pakura also wanted to go out and see more. But her identity was just too sensitive.
She didn't want to cause Gekko Chizan any trouble.
After all, the only reason she was able to stay safely in Konoha was because Chizan had taken responsibility by joining the ANBU.
"Ah come on, it's fine. We can't leave the village, sure—but just walking around inside it? What could happen?"
After much pestering, Pakura finally gave in to Kushina's persistence.
The two of them then strolled into the village and began aimlessly wandering around.
...
At the same time, inside Orochimaru's lab.
"... Chizan-kun, your thinking is absolutely correct."
"It's very common for shinobi to possess multiple chakra natures, but why don't they have kekkei genkai?"
"Because their bloodline lacks the guiding element. But if we apply external guidance and forcibly combine elements, a new nature can be formed."
"Unfortunately, your and Pakura's bloodlines—while unique—still aren't enough to sustain this research."
"There is power in the blood, yes... but far too little. The activity level is severely depleted as well. Sigh... what a pity..."
Over the past two months, Orochimaru had been working with Chizan to analyze kekkei genkai, hoping to artificially recreate them through experimentation.
The project had made some progress, but limited materials meant they couldn't explore further.
Chizan's face was somewhat pale. Over these two months, Orochimaru had drawn his blood nearly every other day.
He had practically become a walking blood bank—but even his potent blood wasn't enough to keep Orochimaru's research going.
Hence Orochimaru's recent sigh.
"Sensei... you've already come so far. I'd say there's no one else in the entire shinobi world who could've made it to this stage."
"But... could we maybe stop with the blood drawing? I think I'm getting anemic..."
Orochimaru looked at his pale-faced disciple and gave a faint smile.
"Chizan-kun, stop pretending. Sure, I draw a few tubes every few days, but I've also given you an endless supply of blood-replenishing supplements."
"With your physique, there's no way you're getting anemic."
"If you want something from me, just say it. Considering how much you've helped with this experiment, I might just agree."
The research had progressed, so Orochimaru was in a pretty good mood.
The moment a reward was mentioned, Gekko Chizan's face lit up with color.
This was a chakra technique he developed himself, inspired by the Eight Gates. By activating the first gate, he could control blood circulation in his face using boosted chakra limits.
There was no denying it—this guy had a gift for developing jutsu... it's just that all his talents were going in the wrong direction.
"Sensei, I think you've also got serious talent in equipment design."
"Could you make me a suit of armor? Nothing too flashy. Just... you know, something that breathes fire and shoots lightning?"
Orochimaru: ...Did you hear what you just said?
Armor? And it has to breathe fire and shoot lightning? Why not just ask it to fly too?
Gekko Chizan: Sorry, but I can already fly...
"Hehehe, Chizan-kun, I think you're getting cocky. Maybe it's time your teacher gave you a little sparring practice?"
"Two months without a fight—I'm worried you've gotten rusty."
Seeing the increasingly dangerous glint in Orochimaru's eyes, Chizan shivered violently.
Crap, fine, no armor then—no need to get physical!
"Uhh... Sensei, the sun's still high, I think I'll go take a nice bath. No need to hold up your research!"
"I'm out!"
Flying Thunder God: Activate.
Gekko Chizan vanished from Orochimaru's sight in an instant.
Watching his disciple flee, Orochimaru gave a sinister little chuckle.
"Looks like I'll need to set up an isolation barrier next time. Flying Thunder God... hehehe..."
...
Having escaped the lab, Gekko Chizan now sat atop the Hokage Rock, looking down at the village.
He couldn't help but grumble out loud:
"Hmph! Stingy old man. It's just a suit of armor—what's the big deal..."
"Whatever. He probably hasn't even gotten into high-level mechanical research yet."
"Sigh... two whole months and not a single attribute increase. So annoying."
"It's time to get back to my roots..."
"Huh? Those two..."
Suddenly, Chizan activated Insect Vision to zoom in on the commercial street below.
When he got a clear look, he couldn't help but shout:
"What the hell? Why are they out there!"
"This Kushina—fine, if she wants to sneak out, whatever. But why drag Pakura into it too?"
But a second later, he smiled.
"Hehehe... Isn't this a perfect opportunity?"
"Let me think... how can I make this a complete stealth operation..."
