Naruto: Senmei Asahi

Chapter 96: Chapter 096: Operation Kannabi Bridge

In the third month of Konoha's 45th year, Senmei Asahi had already spent nearly half a year entrenched on the front lines. Even the New Year, a celebration of family and peace, had passed in solitude—marked only by a quiet moment of sake beneath the pale moon, far from the village they vowed to protect.

Konoha was locked in a brutal two-front war. Resources—shuriken, kunai, explosive tags, medicines, and all manner of ninja tools—were in critical demand. These were not luxuries but lifelines, dwindling with every skirmish. Fortunately, the Daimyō of the Land of Fire had thrown his full support behind the village, pouring vast resources into the war effort. Convoys loaded with supplies snaked endlessly toward the front lines, keeping Konoha just barely afloat in a war of attrition.

Surrounded on multiple sides, with both Iwagakure and Kumogakure pressing in, Konoha's only path forward was to bleed the enemy out longer than it bled itself. Victory through survival.

Yet, Konoha still held an advantage no other village could match—its unparalleled medical system.

Thanks to Tsunade's revolutionary reforms during the Second Great Ninja War, even without the overwhelming power of the First Hokage, Konoha had turned battlefield medicine into a strategic weapon. Though her proposal for embedding a medical ninja in every squad had been rejected at the time, her influence endured. Medical-nin training had been prioritized across the board. Now, wounded shinobi were stabilized and returned to combat faster than their enemies could recover.

It was this very foundation that had given Konoha the upper hand in two world wars. And it would have to do so again.

But even Tsunade's legacy couldn't stop the tides of change. The most recent intelligence from the Land of Wind revealed that Sunagakure's internal strife had reached its conclusion. Rasa had emerged victorious in the power struggle, consolidating control by leveraging his status as the newly declared Fourth Kazekage, bolstered further by the assassination of the Third Kazekage—attributed to the puppet master Sasori.

Still, Rasa hadn't completely crushed the remnants of Chiyo's loyalists. He had given her a political olive branch, preserving her faction and influence. During wartime, he would need Chiyo's experience, and she would tolerate his rule for now.

Konoha's leadership wasted no time. With the situation in Sunagakure stabilized and their allegiance unclear, a strategy had to be decided. Konoha chose to focus its strength on repelling Iwagakure.

Although Rasa had regained political power partially due to Konoha's prior assistance, he had not formed any formal alliance. The threat from Sunagakure remained ambiguous. Engaging three of the Five Great Nations at once was unsustainable. Repelling just one could shift the tide.

Initially, Kumogakure had seemed the most viable target. Kirigakure was tying them down, and they hadn't launched a full-scale assault. But that illusion shattered quickly—Ōnoki, the Third Tsuchikage, had massed over ten thousand Iwagakure shinobi on the border. There was no room to breathe.

Meanwhile, Kumogakure played the long game. They had committed only enough troops to keep Konoha busy at the border, while their elite units slipped across lines to gather intel, sabotage infrastructure, and stir unrest within the Land of Fire. But they refused to declare open war.

With no other viable path, Konoha's strategists turned their gaze to Iwagakure. If they could annihilate the Tsuchikage's front-line forces, Iwagakure would be forced to sign a ceasefire. The cost in lives would be staggering—but necessary. Once free from Iwagakure's pressure, Konoha could redirect its strength and prepare for a potential betrayal from Sunagakure.

Inside the strategy tent of Jiraiya, one of the Legendary Sannin, a meeting of Elite-Jōnin was underway. Among them stood Senmei Asahi—known for his precision, discipline, and steady demeanor. Though still relatively young, his battlefield record had earned him a Jōnin's stripes, and with it, a seat in these crucial war councils.

"The village has issued a direct order." Jiraiya's tone was grave. "Within three days, we are to destroy Kannabi Bridge. Cut off Iwagakure's supply line."

The room went silent. A few moments later, murmurs broke out.

"The so-called 'Kannabi Bridge, Bridge where the gods do not help'?" one Jōnin asked with a frown.

Though the bridge was undeniably vital to Iwagakure's logistics, many questioned the mission's logic. With their mastery of Earth-style, Iwa-nin could rebuild such infrastructure in a matter of days. And even then, the bridge was heavily guarded, nestled deep within the Land of Earth's territory.

Still, Jiraiya's gaze was unwavering. "The bridge is essential. Disrupting their supply, even for just a few days, creates a window. During that time, we will strike. A unified assault from Konoha's full might to eliminate the bulk of Iwagakure's forces at once."

From among the crowd, a golden-haired shinobi stepped forward—Namikaze Minato. Calm, confident, and already a legend among his peers. As Jiraiya's student, he carried immense weight in the room.

"I understand." Minato said. "Let me handle the mission."

To sneak into enemy territory and destroy Kannabi Bridge required a small, elite force. Any more than two teams, and stealth would be compromised. But sending so few into such a heavily fortified area was a death sentence for most. Only someone like Minato, the wielder of the Flying Thunder God Technique, had the capability to escape once the mission was complete.

"Minato, you may choose any ninja in the camp." Jiraiya said.

"There's no need." Minato replied without hesitation. "Kakashi has been promoted to Special-Jōnin. Obito and Rin are more than capable. My team will handle this."

Jiraiya gave a slow nod. "You must come back alive."

Minato's smile was firm. "I won't die before I become Hokage."

Then, a new voice rang out.

"Let me accompany you, Senpai!" declared a young but resolute shinobi—Senmei Asahi.

All eyes turned toward him.

"I've made progress with the Flying Thunder God Technique, and as you know, my medical ninjutsu is second to none in this camp. If anyone gets injured, I can stabilize them, maybe even get them out alive."

Jiraiya's brows furrowed. Asahi was a cornerstone of battlefield medical care. Losing him would shake morale and potentially cripple the camp's support systems.

"You're too valuable here." Jiraiya said slowly.

"Please, Jiraiya-sama," Asahi insisted, "I have full confidence in my abilities. With Minato-senpai there, we have a real chance. I won't let anyone die—not even myself."

Unbeknownst to them all, Senmei Asahi possessed knowledge beyond any of them—an understanding rooted not in prophecy, but in history. He knew this mission, its outcomes, and what lay ahead. He knew the risks, but also the rewards.

He didn't volunteer out of recklessness. He did so to earn distinction, to clear the lingering shadows of past suspicions, and to make the Third Hokage see him not as a liability—but as an asset to the future of Konoha.

Jiraiya looked to Minato, who nodded with calm approval.

"Very well." Jiraiya relented. "But all of you… come back alive."

Asahi placed a hand over his chest. "Understood. I will."

Outside the tent, the wind howled across the barren warfield, whoosh, rustling the camp's flaps and banners.

A new chapter in the war was about to unfold.
