Chapter 23: Chapter 23: Iruka’s Surprise – A C-Rank Mission
Even though it was just a basic mission to catch a cat, Sasuke took it very seriously.
He didn't want Naruto to think he couldn't even handle a simple job like this.
By the time Naruto and Sakura arrived, Sasuke was holding the tiger by the scruff with one hand, while the cat had a completely defeated look on its face.
"Looks like the mission's done."
Kakashi suddenly appeared behind them with a smile.
"Kakashi-sensei?! When did you get here?" Sakura asked in surprise.
"Oh~ I've been following behind you the whole time."
Kakashi walked over to Pakkun with his hands in his pockets. "Thanks for your help."
Pakkun shook his head. "No trouble at all. Your students are smart. Even without me, they would've found the target sooner or later."
"It would've taken us way longer without you," Naruto said quietly—his way of acknowledging Pakkun's help.
Pakkun was pleased to hear that. He held out his paw and said, "Naruto, I'll let you pet my paw pads as a reward!"
"..."
Should've just kept my mouth shut.
Naruto tossed Pakkun to Kakashi and turned away. "Let's go turn in the mission."
Even though he'd been tossed aside, Pakkun watched Naruto walk away with admiration in his eyes. "Still so cold, huh, Naruto."
"You really like him, don't you?" Kakashi said with a laugh.
"Yeah, he's reliable—just like you, Kakashi. It's too bad he won't make a contract with me." Pakkun sighed a little.
Forming a summoning contract is about more than teamwork—it's about mutual respect and connection.
Pakkun saw a lot of potential in Naruto and respected his ability.
But... Naruto didn't seem too interested in him.
"Well, people always have a few regrets in life."
Kakashi smiled softly, sent Pakkun back, and then led Team 7 to the Hokage's office to report in.
Since this mission involved a cat—and it was the Daimyo's wife's cat—there was no way they could wait until tomorrow to complete it.
First, there was no way they could take care of that cat overnight.
Second, they had to consider the Daimyo's wife's status.
Either way, delaying wasn't an option.
When they arrived at the Hokage's office,
they were told Lady Shijimi had already been waiting there for a while.
"Oh, my sweet little tiger~!"
"I was so worried about you!"
Seeing the tiger being smothered in hugs by the chubby Lady Shijimi, Sakura couldn't help but sweat a little. "No wonder it ran away~"
"Alright, your next mission for Team 7 is to help watch the old folks' kids, run errands to the next village, or help dig sweet potatoes."
"Hokage-sama, could we get an easier last D-rank mission?"
Kakashi suddenly spoke up, "I think Naruto and the others are ready to be fine genin. They're more than capable of handling a C-rank mission."
Iruka looked at Naruto, wanting to say something, but hesitated.
Naruto now was no longer that mischievous little troublemaker. It's said that during missions, he even outperformed Sasuke and had earned the approval of elite jonin Kakashi!
This version of Naruto was so outstanding, it was honestly hard to get used to.
"Hmm... how about this? I have a letter here—deliver it to the head of the Aburame clan, and we'll count that as your final D-rank mission."
Hiruzen Sarutobi had originally planned to have the Anbu deliver the letter, but since Kakashi made that call, he didn't mind helping him out.
Naruto stepped up, took the letter from Hiruzen's hand, and asked, "How much's the reward?"
"..."
Hiruzen raised one finger and said, "A thousand ryo."
"Sounds like the letter isn't worth much. Even if we lost it, it wouldn't really matter, right?"
"..."
"Naruto, you brat!"
Kakashi, seeing Hiruzen's helpless face, quickly grabbed Naruto to stop him from talking.
What kind of shinobi tries to bargain with the Hokage over mission pay?
"Then make it two thousand!"
"Straight to the point!"
Naruto broke free from Kakashi's grip and looked at Hiruzen. "You want it delivered today?"
"As soon as possible," Hiruzen replied.
"No problem."
Naruto turned to Kakashi and the others. "Wait here, I'll be right back."
*Yata no Kagami!!*
Naruto turned into a flash of light and disappeared, leaving Iruka completely stunned.
"Hokage-sama, Naruto, he…"
Team 7 had already gotten used to Naruto's abilities, so they weren't surprised. Hiruzen, who had secretly kept an eye on Naruto many times, also knew exactly what Naruto could do, so he wasn't surprised either.
Only Iruka was still stuck with the image of Naruto from the night he fought Mizuki.
"This is a special jutsu Naruto has mastered. According to him, it's called Light Style," Hiruzen said, adjusting his hat.
"Light Style?"
Iruka was stunned.
Is chakra even supposed to have that element?
Could it be a kekkei genkai? Or maybe a bloodline elimination?
One minute later—
A beam of golden light shot through the window into the Hokage's office, and Naruto's body slowly took shape within the light.
"You delivered it?"
Even though they knew about Naruto's powers, everyone still looked shocked.
"If you don't believe me, you can call the Aburame clan leader over and ask," Naruto said calmly.
"..."
If I was going to call him over, what did I send you for?
Hiruzen looked speechless, but still trusted Naruto.
He didn't think Naruto would lie during a mission.
There was no reason for it.
"In that case, your Team 7 is the first to complete ten D-rank missions. As for a C-rank mission…"
Hiruzen picked up the mission list and scanned through it. His eyes finally settled on a task that had just come in.
"I'll assign this one to you."
"Please come in, Mr. Tazuna."
Right after Hiruzen spoke, the door behind Naruto and the others opened, and a drunk old man walked in.
"What? Just a bunch of kids?"
Tazuna took a swig from his bottle, then leaned against the doorframe and looked over the group. "Especially the shortest one… looks like…"
He hadn't even finished speaking when he met Naruto's cold stare.
In that instant, he felt a chill run through his whole body—it was so cold it sobered him up quite a bit.
"What were you going to say?" Naruto asked calmly, looking straight at him.
"N-nothing."
Tazuna quickly waved his hands and gave an awkward smile. "You Leaf Village folks must not be eating well. With talent like this, it's a shame you didn't grow taller."
*Ahem!*
Hiruzen coughed, feeling a bit called out by that. "Kakashi, Naruto, this is your next mission's client, Mr. Tazuna."
Tazuna went on, "Let me introduce myself. I'm Tazuna, a famous bridge builder from the Land of Waves. While I return home to finish building the bridge, I hope you can keep me safe!"
