Naruto: Starting with Snatching the Mangekyō Sharingan

Chapter 168: Chapter 168: Nominating the Fifth Hokage

The Uchiha Clan's Jōnin exchanged uneasy glances as they listened to the discussion, concern evident on their faces.

Tsunade's reputation in Konoha was stellar. Back during the Fourth Hokage elections, had she participated, it was uncertain if Namikaze Minato could have secured the position. Now, her candidacy could certainly stir up complications.

"Clan Head, will this affect Akira? Tsunade is, after all, the granddaughter of the First Hokage. Her reputation in the village isn't insignificant," one of the Uchiha Jōnin voiced his worry.

"There's no need to worry," Fugaku replied with absolute confidence. "With Akira's current standing, no one can alter the outcome of this election."

His tone was calm as he added, "Besides, there's no guarantee the Third Hokage can even convince Tsunade. It's been such a short time since he made his move."

Akira spoke up, his voice brimming with self-assurance.

"Rest assured, there's no suspense in this result. Tsunade has been away from the village for too long. With the current state of the shinobi world, it's clear that Konoha needs a strong Hokage. Everyone understands this."

Hearing Akira's confident words, the worried Uchiha Jōnin fell silent, their unease easing.

As the Uchiha drew closer to claiming the Hokage title, some couldn't help but feel anxious.

From the head of the table, Hiruzen Sarutobi listened quietly to the Jōnin's discussions, his expression unreadable.

Truthfully, he had failed to convince Tsunade. By his estimation, the envoys he sent had only just reached her. Whether she could be persuaded to return and compete for the Fifth Hokage position was still uncertain.

Hiruzen was inclined to think she wouldn't.

After all, Tsunade bore a deep grudge against Konoha's leadership ever since her brother Nawaki's tragic death on the battlefield. Her return was unlikely.

"Even if Tsunade does come back, I doubt it will change anything. Akira's influence in the village is overwhelming. And with the threat of the Akatsuki looming, the majority of the Jōnin would undoubtedly prefer someone powerful to lead as Hokage…" Hiruzen mused.

"So be it," he thought, resigning himself. "Akira becoming the Fifth Hokage is inevitable. Let's see what heights he can lead Konoha to. After all, I still have a few years left to watch over things."

Clearing his throat, he brought the room to order. Once it fell silent, he announced gravely, "Since there are no objections to Tsunade being nominated as a candidate, we'll proceed with this decision."

Finally, with a stern expression, Hiruzen declared, "Seven days from now, I, Hiruzen Sarutobi, will officially step down as Hokage. On the same day, the elections for the Fifth Hokage will commence!"

With that, the meeting adjourned, and the Jōnin filed out of the room in an orderly manner.

The next morning, the news from the meeting spread across the village, causing a stir. The entirety of Konoha buzzed with excitement.

Both civilians and shinobi seemed optimistic about the developments. Uchiha Akira's fame and glory were simply too dazzling. He had almost single-handedly defeated both Kumogakure and Iwagakure.

Even now, the Raikage of Kumogakure remained imprisoned in Konoha. When the Raikage had been marched into the village, the streets had been packed, leaving no room to move.

This was unprecedented—a Kage from a Great Shinobi Village being captured in battle!

"Akira as Hokage? That's excellent news! Let's see who dares challenge the Land of Fire now!"

"Haha! My brother's friend told me that Uchiha Akira's power rivals that of a god. They say the Tailed Beasts, those natural disasters, are like pets in his hands…"

"If you ask me, the First Hokage was too soft-hearted back then. Sharing the Tailed Beasts with other villages? If it were me, I'd have wiped out Kumogakure and Iwagakure completely!"

"One Konoha is enough for the entire shinobi world…"

"Exactly! I hope Akira wipes them all out. Then we'd finally have some peace without constant wars!"

On the streets, villagers gathered around public notices, their faces filled with righteous indignation.

The sentiment toward other villages had long been hostile, and with the Uchiha Clan poised to take leadership, a new fire of pride burned in their hearts.

The villagers knew the Uchiha well. If someone from that clan became Hokage, things would undoubtedly be different from before.

...

Land of Fire, Tanzaku Street

In a room at an inn, Tsunade stood before three Anbu, her gaze icy.

"What are you doing here? Hasn't the war already been won?"

Though Tsunade spent much of her time gambling, news of the Great Ninja War had naturally reached her ears. Conversations among gamblers often strayed to current events.

She knew a little about the situation—that Uchiha Akira had nearly single-handedly defeated the alliance of Kumogakure, Iwagakure, and the Akatsuki.

The lead Anbu spoke respectfully, "Lady Tsunade, we're here to request your return to participate in the Fifth Hokage elections."

"Participate in the Hokage elections? Me?" Tsunade sneered. "Has my sensei completely lost his mind? Does he not understand what kind of Hokage Konoha needs right now?"

With the Akatsuki as a major external threat, Konoha's Hokage had to be someone of immense strength to maintain morale and stability.

Tsunade didn't think poorly of her own abilities, but she wasn't foolish. Comparing herself to someone like Uchiha Akira—a man whose strength rivaled her grandfather's—was pointless.

Such a figure was undoubtedly the best choice to lead Konoha and face the Akatsuki's menace.

Seeing the Anbu hesitate, Tsunade snapped, "Return to the Third Hokage and tell him I'm not interested in the Fifth Hokage position!"

"But Lady Tsunade—" the lead Anbu began, attempting to persuade her further.

"Hmm? Do you want to test my strength?" Tsunade's gaze turned sharp, her blonde hair swaying ominously as if a single wrong word would trigger a punch.

"No, ma'am! We'll report back immediately!" The Anbu scrambled to retreat, clearly unwilling to face her wrath.

Tsunade was known to hit hard—so hard that even her fellow Sannin, Jiraiya, had been hospitalized multiple times after crossing her.

Once the Anbu left, Shizune asked hesitantly, "Lady Tsunade, are you really not going back?"

Tsunade remained silent for a moment before answering, "Of course, I'll return eventually. Konoha is still my grandfather's legacy. Uchiha Akira may be strong, even as formidable as Uchiha Madara, but personal strength and governance are two entirely different matters. I need to see for myself."

Recalling the past, she sighed. Even her grandfather, Hashirama Senju, had relied on his brother, Tobirama, to manage the village.

Shizune's eyes lit up at the prospect. "Lady Tsunade, when will we return?"

Tsunade replied calmly, "After Uchiha Akira becomes Hokage. With the Akatsuki being such a formidable enemy, Konoha needs a strong Hokage to inspire confidence."
