A muffled thud echoed across the training ground.
Once again, Sasuke tumbled from the tree, landing hard on the ground.
Kitazawa gave a subtle nod of approval.
Despite being bruised and battered, Sasuke didn't utter a single complaint.
To earn praise from his father and his older brother, he was willing to push himself to the brink.
Unfortunately, after an entire class period, he still couldn't climb all the way to the top of the tree.
"Sasuke," Kitazawa finally said, halting him, "time's up for today. You'll practice again tomorrow."
"Kitazawa-sensei, you can go back without me," Sasuke shot back, stubbornness flashing in his dark eyes.
"Haste makes waste," Kitazawa countered, shaking his head. "Training goes best when you balance effort and rest."
Sasuke blinked, taken aback.
He didn't fully understand what Kitazawa meant—but somehow, it sounded wise.
And after witnessing Kitazawa's incredible Great Fireball earlier, he couldn't bring himself to argue further.
After a moment's hesitation, he gave a reluctant nod.
"When you get home, make sure you find a medical ninja to look at those injuries," Kitazawa reminded him.
"Okay… Thank you, Kitazawa-sensei."
Sasuke limped away toward the village gates, determination still burning in his eyes.
Kitazawa turned back toward the training ground.
By now, most students had gone home. Only Naruto and Hinata still remained.
"Kitazawa-sensei!" Naruto yelled, sprinting over. "I hit it!"
Kitazawa raised an eyebrow. "Hit what?"
"The bullseye!" Naruto cried, beaming with pride.
"Congratulations," Kitazawa said after a pause. "But don't let it go to your head. This is just the beginning."
"Mm!" Naruto nodded so hard his blonde spikes bounced.
"See you tomorrow," Kitazawa said, patting him on the shoulder. "In our next practical class, we'll be using moving targets."
"I'll train super hard!" Naruto promised, waving enthusiastically before dashing off.
Kitazawa then turned to Hinata.
"Hinata," he asked gently, "are you feeling nervous?"
"A little…" Hinata murmured, but as she met his warm smile, most of her anxiety melted away.
"Let's go," Kitazawa said, holding out his hand.
Hinata hesitated for a split second, then slipped her small hand into his. The warmth of his touch sent a faint blush rising into her cheeks.
Together, they left the Academy and arrived at their destination—a small grove nestled between towering trees.
Hinata's breath caught as she recognized the place.
It was the same grove where those three troublesome boys had cornered her before.
The only difference was the weather: back then, it had been snowing heavily. Today, the sky was clear and blue.
"They're not here yet. Let's set up an ambush," Kitazawa said thoughtfully.
Hinata looked up at him, confusion in her pale eyes.
"After all, I am your sensei," Kitazawa said, clearing his throat. "And it's a sensei's job to educate students—even the troublesome ones."
Hinata blinked rapidly, still not quite following.
"You're completely clueless, aren't you?" Kitazawa teased, gently pinching her soft cheek.
Hinata's face turned pinker, her fair skin blooming like a cherry blossom.
"Hinata," Kitazawa said, his tone growing serious, "remember one thing: to overcome fear, you have to face it head-on."
Hinata pressed her lips together, determination flickering in her lavender eyes.
But when she blinked again, Kitazawa was gone.
Panic tightened her chest as she suddenly felt alone.
Taking a deep breath, she turned—and saw three familiar figures approaching through the trees.
"She really showed up by herself?" Toranosuke exclaimed, glancing around suspiciously.
"Does she seriously think she can take all three of us?" The boy on his left yelled. "Big brother, she's looking down on us!"
"Hey!" Toranosuke stepped forward, his voice loud and brash. "What's your deal, huh?"
Hinata froze where she stood.
Though Kitazawa had given her courage, there was no way she could completely transform her timid nature in just two days.
The moment fear gripped her, Hinata's mind went utterly blank.
Move, Hinata!
She screamed at herself internally, but her body felt drained of all strength, rooted to the spot.
"I'm talking to you!"
Toranosuke snapped, irritation sharpening his voice. "Are you mute or something?"
Hinata flinched, trembling as she instinctively took a step backward.
In her heart, she silently prayed: Kitazawa-sensei… Please save me!
"You've just managed to piss off a lion!"
Toranosuke finally lost his patience. He lunged forward, reaching out to grab Hinata—
—when a violent gust of wind suddenly roared through the clearing.
Hinata's hair whipped upward as the force slammed into her. She threw her hands up to hold it down, eyes squeezing shut.
When she opened them again, she gasped.
That powerful wind had blasted all three boys off their feet, hurling them into the trunks of three separate trees.
"Ahhh!"
Toranosuke let out a shriek, clutching his ribs as if his entire body had shattered.
The other two boys lay sprawled on the ground, faces pale with shock and pain.
From the shadows, Kitazawa stepped out.
That fierce wind just now had been his doing—a Wind Release: Great Breakthrough.
Though only a C-rank jutsu, the power of Wind Release: Great Breakthrough depended entirely on how much chakra was poured into it. In the original story, Orochimaru had used it to blow down an entire stretch of forest.
"W-Who… who are you?" Toranosuke stammered, sweat trickling down his forehead.
"Just a ninja passing by," Kitazawa said with a casual chuckle. "Three boys ganging up on one little girl? You're a disgrace to your parents."
"No… wait a second! You're a sensei!"
The boy on the left managed to sit up, eyes going wide. "I've seen you at the Academy!"
"Shameless!" Toranosuke snapped, pointing accusingly at Hinata. "You actually called a sensei for help?!"
"Toranosuke, shut your mouth," Kitazawa said, his eyes narrowing. "And what's this about a lion?"
"This isn't fair!" Toranosuke whined, shrinking his neck like a turtle.
"Fair?" Kitazawa arched an eyebrow, stepping closer. "You've finally hit the nail on the head."
Toranosuke's eyes widened as he shuffled backward on his hands and feet.
"Three against one—that's not fair," Kitazawa continued, voice low and even. "Hinata asking me for help isn't fair either. So let's make it even."
He paused, then said, "One month from now. Right here. You and Hinata. One-on-one. A fair fight."
Because only by facing her fears could Hinata truly overcome them.
And a month would be enough time for Kitazawa to help change her timid nature.
"Do we have a deal?" Kitazawa held out his hand, forming it into a fist the size of a sandbag.
"I-I agree!" Toranosuke blurted out, eyes glued to the massive fist.
"And the scarf you stole last time?" Kitazawa asked, recalling his mission.
"I… I threw it over there!" Toranosuke pointed shakily to his left.
"See you next time."
Kitazawa glanced in that direction and spotted the scarf lying on the grass. He gave a slight smile.
But to Toranosuke and the other two, that smile looked like a demon's grin. They scrambled to their feet and ran off in a blind panic, tumbling over each other as they fled.
Kitazawa wasn't worried about them telling their parents. He'd already looked into it—the boys' families were just ordinary civilian ninja.
Besides, Toranosuke and his friends were clearly the aggressors. As a sensei, Kitazawa had every right to protect his student.
Even if this went as far as the Hokage, Kitazawa knew he would still be in the right.
"Hinata, are you okay?"
Kitazawa turned and stepped closer to where Hinata stood frozen.
She'd been stiff as a statue ever since the confrontation began.
Hearing his voice and seeing his warm smile, Hinata finally stirred. Without warning, she flung herself forward and hugged him tightly.
Kitazawa blinked, slightly taken aback.
He could feel her small body trembling against him.
After all… she was still just a little girl.
Kitazawa gently rested his hand on her head and stroked her hair in reassurance.
