Chapter 8: Chapter 8: Hanzo the Salamander
Blake's dad loved handguns. It was a strange fascination, especially since the times were peaceful, but it stayed Blake's dad hobby nevertheless. Of all guns, he loved his Glock 17 the most. His dad explained the ins and outs of the weapon, dissecting it and putting it back together repeatedly in front of Blake.
That was Blake's goal with his Ice Kekkei Genkai. He had limited chakra, so he abstained from creating powerful and chakra taxing techniques for now, but a gun? A gun would work. It was small, yet dreadful on one and one. Even shinobi, unless they had sharingan or whatever, would probably have issues dodging bullets.
Now, how did a Glock 17 work?
A normal pistol would require a magazine, a trigger and gunpowder. Of course, Blake didn't have neither bullets nor gunpowder, but he had his ice and imagination. If Blake's thinking was right, he could substitute the gunpowder with an explosion of concentrated chakra that would burst the ice bullet forward.
Blake sat in the middle of the training room, concentrating on the flow of chakra. He closed his eyes, going back to his teenage years. He imagined the gun, the inside mechanics. His hands began to feel slightly cold, as he felt his imagination come to fruition. Blake stretched out another hand, creating a mag full of ice bullets. After a few moments, Blake felt a headache coming.
He had used a good portion of his chakra reserves. Opening his eyes, Blake was disappointed to see a deformed weapon in his hand. The mag was better. Despite the failure, Blake knew it was possible now. He placed the mag inside of the ice, and something clicked. The weapon looked crude, but it felt the same weight as a normal Glock.
Blake aimed the weapon towards the wall and, after some deliberation, put his index finger on the trigger. "All or nothing." Blake mumbled and pushed chakra into the gun. Then, he fired it. It exploded in his hands, forcing him to fall on his back. After the initial shock, Blake stared at the remains of the gun on the ground and at his bloody palms.
Then, he saw the ice bullet stuck in the ground. He had missed by a mile, yet it shot! It freaking shot! As he inspected the bullet though, he realized that that it had mostly disintegrated. Yet, despite his bloody palms and the destroyed ice Glock, he had a smile on his face.
It was possible.
He needed to reinforce both the gun and the bullets with more chakra. Also, maybe, instead of pushing the chakra towards the entire gun, he needed to concentrate it in one single spot. It would require much more practise over the chakra control, yet it was progress.
Blake decided to stop for the day.
Leaving the training, Blake made his way to the canteen. As he stepped inside, he was greeted with all of the Akatsuki. Seeing him, all of the Akatsuki stood up, giving him a round of applause. Blake blushed slightly.
Ever since that first mission, Blake had participated in all of the upcoming ones.
One victory turned into two, then into four, then into ten.
Barely a month passed, yet Blake had managed to become a core member of the Akatsuki. All of his victories were flawless and not a single Akatsuki has died since then. He had gained respect on the level of the three founders, and it was completely deserved. Hell, Blake had even gained himself a nickname from all the victories that he had achieved. At first, among Akatsuki, but later for the enemies.
They feared him.
Blake.
The Unseen Death.
It was cheesy, yes, but Blake felt that it fit, for not a single time had he actually engaged in a battle himself. No enemy has seen him and they died not having seen him. The other factions in Rain Village feared him. The mercenaries and bandits run away at the mention of his name.
Yet, Blake couldn't feel all that happy. On his shoulder weighted the death of many. He had lost count how many had his strategies killed. Although he wasn't the one doing the killing, but it was his actions that killed them nevertheless.
Blake spotted Nagato, Yahiko and Konan on a far end table and made his way towards them, sitting down after taking some porridge and eggs for himself.
"Warm welcome, eh, the Unseen Death?" Yahiko teased with a wink.
Blake rolled his eyes. "I'm just a tactician."
"A damn good one," Yahiko said, grinning.
Konan greeted him with a nod. "Good morning, Blake."
"Morning."
Nagato simply inclined his head, already eating. For a while, the four chatted casually, discussing mundane matters. Then Nagato's sharp eyes caught the injuries on Blake's palms.
"What happened to your hands?" he asked.
Blake hesitated. "Just some training," he said, looking at Konan. "Letting my creativity go wild."
"Training for what?" Yahiko asked, his mouth full. "New ninjutsu?"
"Something like that," Blake replied vaguely, taking a sip of tea. "I'll show you once it's ready."
"So secretive." Konan smiled. "Now I'm curious."
Yahiko laughed, exchanging a glance with Konan that lingered a moment too long.
"Get a room, you two," Blake teased, giggling as they turned red. Konan retaliated by throwing a piece of bacon, which Blake caught midair. "Hey, no wasting food."
Even Nagato smirked as Blake leaned toward him, whispering, "They're so in love. Why can't they just admit it?"
Nagato shrugged. "Maybe that's what love is."
"We can hear you, you know," Yahiko narrowed his eyes, though the smile on his face didn't disappear. "Anyway, I have some good news. Like really good news!"
"Yeah?" Blake leaned forward, interested.
Yahiko leaned in too, keeping his voice a whisper. "Hanzo has sent us a letter that he wants a peace treaty between our groups. Since we are both biggest factions in the Rain Village right now, we would unite the Rain Village once and for all, thus stopping the rebels and external shinobi from causing havoc in our lands. Isn't that great?"
Nagato was smiling. "We finally got on the level of Hanzo. That's amazing."
Konan was content too, looking at Yahiko with deep emotions in her eyes.
They were a step away from accomplishing a part of their dream.
All eyes turned to Blake, but the man had no smile. A frown painted his face, like he was about to go on a battlefield. Yahiko frowned too, together with the duo. "What is it, Blake?"
"Not here." Blake pushed away his plate, standing up. His mind was racing. Looking at them, his stomach churned. He didn't know how, but Blake had become friends with them, better friends than with anyone on Earth. And he wanted to protect them, by whatever means possible. He had to tell them the truth about Hanzo.
Nagato, Yahiko and Konan stood up at once. The Akatsuki saw their concerned faces, but decided not to comment and simply ate in silence. With Blake in the lead, they promptly made their way to the balcony, where the rain kept pouring from above. Slowly, Blake took out a single cigarettes and lit it up with the lighter he had bought.
As he smoked, the Akatsuki stared at him, uncomfortable.
Then, Blake opened his mouth. "It's a trap."
"What are you talking about?" Yahiko was ready for an argument, it seemed.
"I said, it's a trap." Blake repeated.
Nagato nudged Yahiko before he could respond. "Blake…on what basis are you making this statement? Do you know something that we don't?"
"I can't provide with you concrete proof, and I am sorry for that, but I know what I am saying is true." Blake exhaled some of the smoke. "Do you remember that mission, where we ambushed the Stone Shinobi and they, instead of fighting, suddenly retreated?"
"Yeah, there were pretty skilled." Konan nodded.
"Nightmare caught one of them and I interrogated him personally." Blake stated, drawing another frown from Yahiko, but Nagato calmed him down. "I am sorry I haven't said about this, but I wanted to process the information before saying anything that might not be true."
"The shinobi that I caught was, in fact, not from the village of Stone." Blake sighed, putting two fingers on his temples. It was not truth, of course, but Blake had to lie. He couldn't just tell them that he was from another world and their world was actually a form of entertainment in theirs. "Before I could ask him anything, that shinobi bit his own tongue off. However, I inspected his body and discovered that his tongue had a cursed seal."
"Cursed seal?" Yahiko was no longer frowning, but rather thinking deeply.
"Yes, it prevents the person from speaking anything…sensitive." Blake threw the bud of the cigarettes from the balcony. "I made some digging and I found out that it is technique often used by Konoha's secret organization, Anbu."
"Wait, wait, stop there for a second." Nagato was clearly having struggle following too. "How do you know so much? And how do you even know about that organization if it's secret?"
"I know what I am saying might not make sense, but I swear on my parents grave that I only want what's the best for Akatsuki." Blake stated, his voice cold. "I only wish for you to live."
Konan was frowning, though she nodded at Blake's words. "Assuming that is true, I still don't understand what you are trying to say. The fact that Konoha is intervening in this region is unnerving, but not surprising."
"The secret organization is controlled by Danzo, who I am sure you guys know of." Blake said, making their eyes go slightly wide. "Danzo's organization being here means that he might believe that this region could threaten Konoha's peace. More precisely, he must believe that Akatsuki is the threat."
"We are the threat?" Yahiko almost shouted. "We are trying to turn this place for the better!"
"Better for us, not for him." Blake answered promptly, shutting Yahiko off. "After some observation, I have made the conclusion that Danzo has to be working with Hanzo. Despite the attack on the Rain Village, Hanzo has never helped… and I think it is because he wants to get rid of the Akatsuki. The man has been holed up in his mansion, never going out, and he likes power. Our organization is taking part of that power. Do you really think that man is the kind to sign a peace treaty?"
The trio listened, exchanging glances.
Nagato coughed.
"This is an interesting view, but this is all based on merely observation. You could be wrong."
"No." Blake said a single word, conviction high in his voice. "I am telling you, it is a trap. Please, believe me. I don't want to lose you guys."
There was something in Blake's voice that made them halt. It was almost like he was begging? They hadn't really seen Blake like this since they met.
"Please." Blake repeated, genuine concern in his voice.
Blake had become an integral part of the Akatsuki and they had started listening to his words ever since a while ago. He had never led to the wrong path yet, and he had many opportunities to do so.
"Okay." Yahiko was the one to answer. "I trust you, Blake. If what you are saying is true and we don't listen, we might actually end up dead, especially if Konoha's Danzo is also involved."
"I trust you, too." Nagato added.
"Me too." Konan was in.
Blake smiled in relief.
"However, what do you suggest we do? If we don't accept the peace treaty, then we basically declare war, and then we are probably done anyway." Yahiko made a good point.
"Go into hiding." Blake answered immediately. "Wait out the storm, send scouts to see what is going on. If I am correct, then Hanzo will start searching for you, and he will want blood. Hide well, because they will turn this place upside down to find you."
"And what then? Just hide?"
"No, we will attack, but not now…We need to wait."
"Wait for what?"
"Me." Blake smiled hollowly, turning to stare at pour down of rain outside. "You have to wait until I come back."
"What?" Konan stepped forward, anxiousness on her face. "We are facing a disastrous situation right now, according to you, and you are leaving?"
"I have to, but I am leaving Nightmare behind." Blake stated. "I am going on expedition to get another summon."
That gave them a pause. Nagato shrugged. "Another summon? This is good news, but do you think a summon will help us face Hanzo the Salamander and Danzo? If it's at the level of Nightmare, then it would hardly help."
"That's true, but I don't know yet what kind of summon it will be." Blake ruffled the back of his blonde hair. "It's hard to explain, but it can either be extremely powerful or useless. Obviously, I will think of something in case it is not a good summon, but it's a gamble, and we need every advantage we could get."
"Do you need help with getting a good summon?" Konan narrowed her eyes, obviously confused at Blake's ability.
"No, I have to do it alone." Blake said the last part as a whisper. "I just need to you to hide for now. I don't know how long I will be out, but it shouldn't be more than a month. Then, depending on the situation, we will strike Hanzo back."
Yahiko, Konan and Nagato exchanged glances. It was confusing and barely believable, but Blake was their friend, their comrade that led them to victory many times, so they had to believe. They wanted to believe.
"And, one more thing." Blake stepped closer to Nagato. "Your eyes. You haven't awakened their true power…yet to do that you need to experience something so heart-shattering that it would destroy you. And there is one crazy individual that wants that to happen, and he won't stop at anything. I am scared of him more than I am scared of Hanzo."
Suddenly targeted, Nagato frowned, but once he heard the last part, realization gnawed on him and his eyes went wide.
"I am not going to say his name, but you know who I am talking about. Never trust that person, never. He is most evil of all, and he wants nothing but pain in this world. If he finds you, change your hiding spot immediately. If he talks with you, listen but never do anything he says. Okay? Please tell me that you can do that."
"How do you—" Nagato was about to ask something, but then he stopped and simply nodded with a grim expression.
"You are scary when you become like this, Blake." Yahiko commented, but didn't add anything else.
Konan was simply too flabbergasted.
"Also…I need a few kunai's, some shuriken's, ten of explosive papers and some food that is easy to carry." Blake said as he took out another cigarette. Stressful and dangerous time were ahead of him.
