Chapter 16: Chapter 16: Sasuke's Challenge, a Fight Without Rules
The higher-ups of the Great Ninja Villages were no fools.
The Uchiha Clan had a thousand-year history and was one of the most prestigious ninja clans in the world. The Sharingan was considered the strongest Bloodline Limit after the loss of Wood Release. Countless people dreamed of possessing a Three-Tomoe Sharingan. After all, Kakashi Hatake earned titles like the "Copy Ninja" and "Konoha's Technician" for having copied thousands of ninjutsu with just a Three-Tomoe Sharingan.
And copying ninjutsu was merely a Two-Tomoe ability. The true strength of the Sharingan began to emerge only after the third tomoe awakened. The Three-Tomoe Sharingan was known as the "Genjutsu Eye," able to perform powerful illusions and read movements flawlessly.
However, only those from the Uchiha Clan could fully wield its true power.
Any Uchiha who mastered the Three-Tomoe Sharingan was typically an elite Jonin, nearly unmatched in one-on-one combat. Within the Uchiha Clan, there were likely dozens of such powerful individuals. Alongside them were others who had awakened One-Tomoe or Two-Tomoe Sharingan, as well as numerous clan members who had yet to awaken theirs. It would be impossible to exterminate them all in a single night—even if Uchiha Itachi possessed the legendary Mangekyo Sharingan.
Even if he could, such an act would inevitably cause a massive disturbance.
Yet the Uchiha Clan had indeed been annihilated overnight. And Itachi, the one who carried it out, had managed to escape from Konoha without any consequences.
The implications were staggering.
The Great Ninja Villages were deeply unsettled. The strength and strategy required to wipe out the most powerful clan in a single night, combined with the ruthlessness of the act and the complete lack of follow-up consequences, pointed to one chilling conclusion:
Konoha's top brass was involved.
While the Great Ninja Villages didn't publicly challenge Konoha, they did send spies to investigate the truth. However, once those spies failed to retrieve useful intelligence, the matter was left untouched.
The truth was that the Third Ninja World War had left all five Great Villages heavily weakened. They hadn't yet recovered and had no desire to reignite a major conflict. Even the ever-aggressive Hidden Cloud Village refrained from exploiting the situation. Each village focused on maintaining the current fragile balance—buying time and preparing for the inevitable Fourth Ninja World War.
Izanami, though not aware of all the details, could guess most of it.
Having read the original manga, he understood that the coming years would be relatively calm—making it the perfect window for growth and development.
Uchiha Sasuke had been trapped under the Genjutsu of the Mangekyo Sharingan and remained unconscious for an entire week.
When he finally returned to the classroom, he seemed like a completely different person.
Previously, Sasuke would get headaches from being surrounded by fangirls, but he never said anything hurtful or lashed out. Ironically, this kind and indifferent attitude only made the girls chase him harder.
Now, however, those same girls who were delighted by his presence didn't dare to approach him at all.
His aura was terrifying. His eyes were cold. He seemed distant—untouchable.
None of his peers dared look him in the eye.
Only Izanami could see through his exterior. Beneath that chilling aura, Sasuke was still a wounded soul—fragile but full of pride. He was in desperate need of love and healing. But his pride would never allow him to accept sympathy or pity.
There was only one person who could potentially break through his walls: Uzumaki Naruto.
Naruto had reincarnated for a thousand years and shared a twisted yet parallel fate. He was the only one who could someday earn Sasuke's trust and recognition.
That afternoon, after classes ended and students began to leave in small groups, Izanami finally witnessed the long-awaited moment.
As always, some students stayed back to train, others went home, and a few loners like the old Sasuke left quietly on their own.
But not today.
Today, Uchiha Sasuke approached Izanami directly and said something that made Izanami's heart skip a beat.
"Izanami, want to have a match?"
He said the same words Izanami had once spoken to him years ago.
Izanami, who had purposely come to the academy instead of walking home with Hinata just to witness this moment, smiled inwardly.
Outwardly, however, he pretended to be surprised.
Staring at Sasuke—whose eyes still carried shadows of trauma and whose body hadn't fully recovered—he teased lightly, "You weren't interested when I challenged you back then. What's changed?"
Sasuke didn't answer directly. Instead, he sneered and said provocatively, "Less talk. Are you scared?"
Back then, Sasuke had only wanted to train with his older brother, Uchiha Itachi. Anyone else felt like a waste of time. But now, his world had been shattered.
His clan had been wiped out.
His only goal now was to gain enough power to kill Itachi.
And to resurrect the Uchiha Clan, the world first had to remember the strength and honor of the Uchiha name.
That meant defeating everyone in his generation. Including Izanami.
Izanami didn't know Sasuke's exact thoughts, but he could sense the intent behind them.
Seeing Sasuke using provocation to hide his vulnerability, Izanami chose not to push further. Instead, he smiled and nodded.
"Alright. Let's have a match then."
"Very good. Let's go to the training ground."
But Izanami shook his head. "No need to go to the training ground. I'll take you somewhere else."
He turned and began walking.
Sasuke followed silently.
The Uchiha Clan had been annihilated a week ago. Uchiha Obito—now hiding in the shadows—wouldn't be appearing in Konoha again except on specific days, like Rin Nohara's memorial.
Izanami had already marked those dates on his calendar. As long as he avoided the wilderness on those days, he would be safe.
So, a few days ago, he had resumed training in an abandoned area near the forest.
Soon, the two arrived at the deserted training field.
This was where Izanami usually trained with Hinata. The ground was riddled with craters, and the trees bore the scars of powerful ninjutsu.
Sasuke narrowed his eyes, startled by what he saw.
If all these damage marks had been made by Izanami...
That meant this orphan had mastered multiple elemental ninjutsu—just like him.
Unlike Sasuke, who had his father's guidance, Izanami had achieved all this through self-study.
It finally clicked for Sasuke.
The reason this guy had always been able to suppress him wasn't because of luck. It was because he trained harder than anyone else.
His fighting spirit reignited.
He needed to fight someone like this.
He needed to win—to prove his strength.
"How do you want to fight?" Izanami asked, looking at Sasuke calmly. "Just Taijutsu? Or a no-rules match?"
A no-rules match meant anything goes—Taijutsu, ninjutsu, genjutsu, shuriken, Three Body Technique, Body Flicker, elemental ninjutsu—everything was fair game.
It was extremely dangerous, usually reserved for sixth-year students. Such matches required a referee and a medical ninja on standby.
If Iruka Umino had been present, he would have instantly stopped this match and given them a harsh scolding.
But Sasuke didn't hesitate for even a second.
"No-rules match."
