Chapter 93: Chapter 91: Incredible Focus
As Ryu headed home from the academy, the sun began to set, transforming Konoha's sky into a vivid orange and pink palette. He was excited to share his first day of school, which had been a whirlwind of feelings and experiences with his adoptive grandfather.
Sliding open the door, Ryu called out, "I'm home, Grandpa!"
Dan's warm voice responded from the kitchen, "Welcome back, Ryu! How was your first day?"
Ryu entered the kitchen to find Dan washing vegetables and fish, preparing for their evening meal. The sight of his grandfather's weathered hands working diligently brought a smile to Ryu's face. "It was... interesting," he replied, his voice tinged with a mix of excitement and weariness. "Do you need any help with dinner?"
Dan nodded, gesturing to a cutting board. "Why don't you start chopping these vegetables while you tell me all about it?"
As Ryu began to work alongside his grandfather, he recounted the events of his day. "Well, it didn't start off great. I was actually late on my first day because of a stupid arrogant brat was blocking my way at the academy. "
Dan's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "A brat? What happened?"
Ryu shrugged, his knife moving deftly through a carrot. "An Uchiha brat challenged me at the entrance. I was late because of him and was punished for that." He sighed, remembering the frustration he felt earlier. "The teacher made me stand in the corner for the first hour of class. Talk about embarrassing!. But hey, at least I learnt my lesson about punctuality the hard way, even though I was already punctual."
"I see," Dan murmured, his expression thoughtful. "And how did the rest of the day go?"
With a smile, Ryu cut through a carrot with skill. "I found out I'm in the S-class," he said, a hint of pride in his voice. "But do you remember Kaito, the boy from the orphanage who used to bully me? I met him in the hallway today."
"Oh, that boy. I remember him," Dan replied, his brow furrowing slightly at the memory.
"He's in B-class," Ryu continued.
Dan nodded, a knowing look in his eyes. "B-class, huh? That class is full of civilians. Unlike you, he will not have to put up with the children from Ninja clans' tantrums."
Ryu let out a small chuckle and said, "Tell me about it. The Uchiha brats are really annoying. It's like they've got a permanent superiority complex or something."
As they continued to prepare the ingredients, Ryu told Dan about the other students he'd met, including a girl named Saya Uchiha. "She seems nice," he said, "A little too angry sometimes, but nice." Ryu paused, his eyes distant as he recalled their interactions. "
Dan smiled warmly. "It's good that you're making friends, Ryu. Try to make as many as you can. In the ninja world, allies can be just as important as skills."
Their conversation shifted to the academic side of things. Ryu explained that the first day had mostly been an introduction to the various subjects they'd be studying. "It all seems so fascinating, Grandpa. I can't wait to learn more, especially about ninjutsu."
At the mention of Ninjutsu, Dan's eyes twinkled. "I might be willing to teach you some ninjutsu myself."
Ryu's eyes widened with excitement. "Really? That would be amazing!"
Dan held up a hand, tempering Ryu's enthusiasm. "On one condition. You need to master the leaf-sticking chakra control exercise first. If you can keep a leaf stuck to your forehead for two hours straight, then we'll talk about ninjutsu training."
Ryu grinned confidently. "Two hours? Piece of cake! I can already do it for an hour. I'll have that leaf stuck to my forehead so long, people will think it's a new fashion statement!"
Ryu's declaration made Dan laugh. Feeling emboldened by his grandfather's offer, Ryu decided to push his luck a little further. "Grandpa, I was wondering... Could I borrow real Ninja gear for practice? Like kunai and shuriken?"
Dan's expression turned serious as he considered the request. After a moment, he nodded slowly. "I think you're ready to handle real weapons. But remember, they're not toys. You must treat them with respect and caution at all times."
Ryu's face lit up with excitement and gratitude. "Thank you, Grandpa! I promise I'll be careful."
As they finished preparing the ingredients, Ryu remembered the chicken marinating in the fridge—a recipe he had suggested earlier. "Shall we start baking the chicken, Grandpa?"
As they waited for the chicken to cook, the delicious aroma filled the house, making their mouths water in anticipation.
While waiting, Ryu decided to put his chakra control to the test. Picking up a leftover leaf from the kitchen, he stuck it to his forehead and began mopping the floor, maintaining his focus on both tasks. It was not too difficult for him to handle two tasks that required only his concentration because of his [Parallel Thinking]. More precisely, when using parallel thinking, the difficulty of two mental tasks was equal to that of one.
Dan watched in amazement as Ryu effortlessly multitasked, his movements fluid and precise. "What incredible chakra control," he muttered to himself. But as soon as he thought that, the leaf fell.
"Oops!" Ryu exclaimed, quickly snatching the leaf mid-air and reattaching it to his forehead. "Just giving gravity a little test there, Grandpa."
Dan's eyes narrowed as he watched Ryu immediately pick up the fallen leaf and reattach it to his forehead without breaking stride. The boy's concentration was remarkable, reminding Dan of stories he'd heard about legendary shinobi.
"No, it's not just chakra control," Dan thought, "it's his ability to focus on multiple things at once. Such incredible focus."
While experts could perform similar feats, they usually needed to concentrate intensely on both tasks and couldn't maintain it for long.
Dan could only think of two shinobi who had demonstrated such focus: Tsunade Senju, one of the legendary Sannin, who has stopped ageing by constantly regenerating and revitalising her old cells, and Third Tsuchikage, Onoki, who could combine three elements and utilise the kekkei tōta called Dust Release. Both of which require impeccable chakra control, as theories suggest about Creation Rebirth Jutsu and Dust Release Jutsu.
As Ryu continued his cleaning, seemingly unaware of the impressive feat he was performing, Dan couldn't help but smile. He thought to himself, "If Ryu keeps improving at this rate, his chakra control might soon rival that of those legendary Ninjas."
The realisation made Dan consider introducing more advanced chakra control exercises sooner than he had planned. Perhaps it was time to teach Ryu about tree climbing and waterwalking.
As the aroma of baking chicken filled the house, Ryu finished mopping and released the leaf from his forehead. "All done, Grandpa! The floor's clean, and dinner should be ready. I hope you're hungry because I've worked up quite an appetite. Who knew being a human leafholder could be such hard work?"
Dan laughed at Ryu's joke, appreciating his grandson's unique sense of humour. As they enjoyed their meal, Ryu continued to recount his day, peppering his stories with witty observations and playful jabs at his classmates and teachers.
As the evening passed with lively conversation, delicious food, and the warmth of family, Dan's heart swelled with pride. He could see that his grandson was not only adapting well to the academy but also showing potential beyond his years.
As the night deepened, Dan noticed that Ryu had managed to keep two leaves stuck to his forehead for an extended period. Occasionally, one would fall, but Ryu would immediately reattach it without breaking his concentration on their conversation.
Dan settled into a nearby chair, watching with a mixture of pride and curiosity. He couldn't shake the feeling that Ryu's abilities were far beyond what one would expect from a child his age.
As they cleaned up after dinner, Dan noticed that Ryu had managed to keep two leaves stuck to his forehead for an extended period. Occasionally, one would fall, but Ryu would immediately reattach it without breaking his concentration on their conversation.
Dan thought, "Is he practicing leaf-consentration exercise or trying to disguise himself as a tree?"
"Ryu," Dan said softly, as they prepared to turn in for the night. "I want you to know how proud I am of you. Your first day at the academy was just the beginning. Remember, being a ninja isn't just about power or skill. It's about heart, determination, and the will to protect those you care about."
Ryu nodded solemnly, his eyes shining with determination. "I understand, Grandpa. I promise I'll make you proud."
Dan replied, "You already have."
