Naruto: The Senju Patriarch

Chapter 23: Chapter 23: Fragile...

The war had broken out, and Konoha was fighting a battle on 2 fronts within Amegakure. And Amegakure, led by Hanzo of the Salamander, was a pain in the sides of all the villages who had invaded his lands. The front with Suna was being led by Hatake Sakumo (and aided by the Nara clan leader), whose expert use of Kenjutsu, particularly dealing with Suna's puppeteer corps led by Lady Chiyo and her brother Ebizo. His expertise gave him the highest kill count on all the fronts, almost being specialised in efficiently dealing with lower level Shinobi while also killing leaders within the Suna force including Chiyo's son and his wife. His numerous feats, allowing Konoha's army to overcome the difference in numbers, earned him the title of 'Konoha's White Fang.'

The Suna front was a constant war between poison and detoxification - a battle between Lady Chiyo and Princess Tsunade, which cemented Tsunade's position as the best medical shinobi within the world. This constant battle to detoxify and come up with a cure or create new poisons to beat cures ensured that Konoha was able to hold on. Even with the Jonin Rasa who had learned the Third Kazekage's magnetic Jutsu being involved, Kato Dan's spirit transformation Jutsu meant that he could not act freely without being killed in an ambush which the terrain of Amegakure helped.

On the other hand, the Iwa front was in a much more dire state. Orochimaru led this front for now, being aided by Jiraiya and other clan leaders, most notably the Uchiha Clan and Hyuga Clan Patriarchs. Despite this, the presence of the 4 Tails Jinchuriki and 5 Tails Jinchuriki alone created a dangerous situation. The 4 Tails' sheer destructive power caused by the Lava Style tied up Orochimaru and Uchiha Tajima, who was using his Genjutsu with his Sharingan against the beast, and Jiraiya barely managed to contain the 5 Tails with other elite Jonin. However, this left a large discrepancy in the high combat power shinobi between the sides, allowing Iwagakure shinobi, who already had a large numbers advantage, to wreak havoc among Konoha forces.

At one point about a year into the war, Orochimaru was with his squad of Genin including Senju Nawaki, following up on a minor lead. They eventually were in conflict with a small Genin squad to which Orochimaru allowed his team to gain experience. Nawaki, particularly pumped, chased after them, with his dreams of being Hokage in mind. But it was a trap. As he ran on a tree, there was a paper bomb, but enhanced by his training with Katsuro, Nawaki was able to react just in time and dodge the blast with a body flicker. Despite this, soon the abushers made themselves known. It was a trap that had been laid for the snake of Konoha, and they had come prepared with 5 Jonin, 3 of them being elite Jonin, and 10 Chunin. Orochimaru was surrounded, and the leader of the enemy force, being careful, had sent 3 Chunin and multiple Genin to take care of the Konoha Genin. At this point, Orochimaru had still not fully matured into his full strength, and the force containing 5 Jonin and 7 Chunin was significant and could very well end him.

Orochimaru, known for his survivability, forced a stalemate and held on, trying to reach his Genin squad who were thoroughly outmatched.

Nawaki, however, became the gamechanger - his training with Katsuro had paid off.

His Taijutsu and Ninjutsu were far beyond any ordinary Genin, and he used precise Shuriken Shadow Clone Jutsu amidst the chaos to take care of the Genin targeting him, while using Water and Earth Style Jutsu to create an opening and take care of the Chunin as well. But he could not celebrate, his teammates and Sensei were in danger. Nawaki was still young and did not have as much chakra as typical Senjus. He had already used a considerable amount but was still forced to make a shadow clone to save his other teammate. His surprise attacks allowed him to target a Chunin with the Water Dragon Bullet Jutsu using his original body, and successfully take him out. His Shadow Clone bought time for his injured teammate, who had been struggling, while the original teamed up with his teammate and made quick work of the Genin. As the shadow clone was finally destroyed and Nawaki regrouped with both his teammates (who had both been injured), instead of the 1 Chunin and Genin, they saw that 5 more Chunin had been sent.

Nawaki fought to his limit, protecting his comrades as much as he could using Jutsu after Jutsu, and exhausting his chakra.

Soon, he could only throw kunai and shuriken and suffered many injuries all over his body. Seeing this, the Chunin, who had suffered as well, losing one after another, heavily injured, went in for the kill.

Nawaki, on the brink of death, still managed to move his body, dodge the sword strike despite his exhaustion, probably thanks to the instincts beaten into his body by Katsuro's sheathed sword. But the battle had taken its toll, the dodge was not clean, and with blood running into his eyes, he was left helpless.

Nawaki lost an arm, and collapsed to the ground.

The enemy, assuming he was dead, focussed on the last 2 Genin, who by this point were cursing themselves for how weak they were, in tears of Nawaki's noble sacrifice. They fought with everything they had as well, trying to honour their comrade's - no- their friend's sacrifice but when a kunai attached with a paper bomb flew at them, they couldn't do anything but resigned themselves to their fate. Slightly before this, the Genin who had been cowering in the back grew arrogant, and went towards Nawaki's body intending to finish him off with a smirk.

To his surprise, however, Nawaki, who still clutched a kunai in his other hand, rose with surprising swiftness, taking the Genin off guard and stabbing up through the enemy Genin's neck from underneath him.

Fuelled by nothing but his sheer will alone, he made his body move, throwing himself in front of the paper bomb. The bomb exploded, taking Nawaki's body with it.

It desecrated the body of a man - nay - a boy who had been a true hero, spreading his remains over the forest to become fuel for its inhabitants.

This time Nawaki was truly dead.

His death, however, was not futile; he had reduced the load on and created distractions for Orochimaru, who had managed to defeat his ambushers with his cunning, escaping their entrapment.

Then, he saw the scene. Slowly, his eyes widened as he processed what was before him. Seeing the scene, his eyes dilated as he was sent into a fit of rage and sorrow. He mercilessly massacred and shredded the Chunin, still haunting his Genin before grabbing them and escaping with them to safety.

Seeing the expressions on their faces, as if they had lost everything, it broke something inside Orochimaru. He clutched at the Nawkai's necklace he had picked up.

People are so fragile…
