Chapter 12: Chapter 12: Getting caught mid-training
The intensity of the training session left me breathless and exhilarated. As I stood there, still feeling the intense power of the third Gate coursing through my veins, a soft rustling sound from the trees caught my attention. I turned, expecting to see a deer or some other forest creature, but instead, a familiar figure emerged from the shadows.
"Minato!" I exclaimed, surprised and pleased to see my friend. His blond hair caught the sunlight, making him look like a golden beacon in the morning light.
Kishimoto-Sensei, are we sure he wasn't the actual child of prophecy? What's with that grand looking entrance he just made? All holier than thou, like!
Minato's eyes were wide with amazement as he approached, his usual calm demeanor replaced with a look of genuine awe. "Shirokumo… that's incredible. I've heard of the Eight Inner Gates, but to see someone our age use them… it's unbelievable."
I felt a surge of pride at his words. "How long have you been there?" I asked, curious if he had witnessed the entire training session.
Minato shook his head, a small smile playing on his lips. "I only arrived a bit ago, but seeing you use the Gates piqued my interest. I decided to stick around and see what would happen. And I'm glad I did."
Before I could respond, Minato's expression turned thoughtful. "Shirokumo, I know it might be asking a lot, but how about we spar? It's been a while, and I want to see how much stronger you've become after training with Might Dai-san."
Excitement bubbled up inside me at the thought of testing my newfound abilities against my friend. I took a battle ready stance, and so did he. "Alright, Minato. I'm ready whenever you are."
But before we could begin, Might Dai's stern voice cut through the air. "Stop right there, you two."
We both turned to see Dai stepping forward, his expression serious. "Shirokumo, my boy. And you, Minato, right? Listen carefully. The Eight Gates technique is not something to be used lightly, especially not against a fellow Konoha shinobi. ESPECIALLY not against a good friend!"
Minato bowed respectfully, understanding the gravity of Dai's words. "I didn't mean to intrude, Might Dai-san. It's an honor to meet a master of the Eight Gates technique. I only wanted to see my friend's progress."
Dai's expression softened slightly, though his tone remained firm. "I appreciate your enthusiasm, Minato-kun, you are an exemplary young man! The power of YOUTH courses through you as well! That I see! But this technique is incredibly dangerous." Might Dai turned to me again. "The strength it grants can easily corrupt you if not wielded with the right intent. Remember, Shirokumo, arrogance is the end of your springtime of youth! What I've taught you is meant to protect others, not to show off or challenge your comrades."
I felt a pang of guilt at the thought of misusing such a powerful technique. "I understand, Dai-san. I won't misuse this power..." I said as the surge of strength faded, the gates closed one after another as I ceased pumping my chakra through them.
"Good." Dai nodded, satisfied with my response. "I say this not to dampen your spirit, but because I care for you, young man. Know that the true strength of a warrior lies not just in their power, but in their heart and the way they choose to use that power."
Minato bowed again, his respect for Dai evident. "Thank you for your wisdom, Might Dai. I'll remember your words as well."
Dai's face brightened with a wide smile. "I'm glad to hear that, Minato-kun. Both of you have bright futures ahead. Continue to train hard and support each other. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll give you two some time to catch up."
With that, Dai turned and walked back towards the village, leaving me and Minato alone in the clearing.
I turned to my friend, "Thanks, Minato."
"For what?"
"What you said. About my progress and well, seeing someone like you excited to challenge me made me feel like I'd grown too."
Minato grinned, his eyes sparkling with their usual kindness. "That's because you have, Shiro! How do you feel right now? Like, after using that power."
I took a deep breath, still feeling the lingering effects of the Gates. "It's… intense. The power is incredible, but the strain is just as great. Dai-san's right; it's not something to be used lightly."
Minato nodded, his expression thoughtful. "I can imagine. But if anyone can master it, it's you, Shiro. Your dedication and determination are unmatched. Even I can't help but feel pressured by the way you train." He smiled wryly, his gaze admiring.
For a moment, I was stunned. Had Minato really just said that to me? Minato—the genius whose prowess seemed limitless, whose training always seemed effortless. The idea that he felt any pressure from me was almost surreal. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry at the thought. All I could do was smile. "Thank you, Minato. That means everything coming from you."
Minato scratched his cheek, a light chuckle escaping his lips. "You make it sound like I'm some big deal when I'm really not. I'm just doing my best, same as you."
I chuckled, shaking my head. "If only you knew how much of an impact you've had on me. Sometimes I feel like I'm constantly trying to keep up with you."
Minato's eyes widened slightly, a look of genuine surprise on his face. "Really? I always thought you were the one setting the bar so high. I'm doing everything I can not to let you catch up, you know?"
"Really?" I said, grinning momentarily before I burst out in laughter. "Hahahahaha! Hey, now that's just unfair! Hahahaha!"
Minato joined in, his laughter ringing out, warm and contagious. "I guess we both have a way of pushing each other, don't we?"
We stood there for a moment, both of us catching our breath, the tension of the training session melting away in our shared laughter. It was moments like these, filled with camaraderie and mutual respect, that made all the hard work and challenges worthwhile.
Minato wiped a tear from the corner of his eye, still smiling. "It's good to see you having fun, Shiro. It's easy to get caught up in the seriousness of training. Sometimes, we need a reminder that it's okay to enjoy the journey."
"You're right. It's easy to get lost in the grind. Thanks for reminding me why I started this in the first place."
As we stood there, the golden sunlight filtering through the trees, I felt an even deeper appreciation for my friend. His presence was a constant source of inspiration, and I knew that together, we could overcome any challenge that lay ahead.
Minato slapped me on the back, his grin wide. "Let's keep pushing further. We've got a long road ahead, but with a friend like you, it's going to be one amazing journey."
"Absolutely!"
We stood there for a moment, enjoying the tranquility of the forest. The bond between us had grown even stronger through our shared experiences and mutual respect. I realized that these moments of camaraderie were as vital to our growth as the grueling drills. Together, we were not just pushing our limits—we were defining them.
