Chapter 168: Chapter 168: A Conversation Between Grandfather and Grandson
As Obito stared at Madara with a wary expression, Madara couldn't help but feel a bit unsettled.
"This kid… Why is he looking at me like that? As if I have some ulterior motive or something."
After thinking it over for a while, Obito dismissed his suspicions.
Impossible!
How could Uchiha Madara possibly like women?!
Black-haired Hashirama wasn't enough for him?!
"Hmm…"
After shaking off such absurd thoughts, Obito began weighing the pros and cons.
"Honestly, becoming Grandpa Madara's grandson doesn't sound like a bad deal," he mused.
If he considered the familial hierarchy, this would technically make him a "super-grandson," skyrocketing his status.
Besides, with this relationship established, it'd be easier to persuade —cough cough— easier to guide Madara to the path of redemption!
But seriously, why does Madara like me so much?
Obito couldn't figure it out!
Just as his thoughts ran wild, a familiar voice suddenly echoed in his mind.
[ Ding! This system will now answer the host's question! ]
[ Reason One: The host suits Madara's taste.
Reason Two: The host possesses the Respect for Elders Buff! ]
[ Respect for Elders Buff: As a good child who respects elders, all individuals over sixty years old have their favorability toward you increased by +1. ]
(T/N: Respect for Elders Buff it is from very beggining of the story)
Understanding dawned on Obito.
"So that's why!"
"I almost forgot about this reward after so many chapters… Turns out being a good person really pays off!"
Having figured it all out, Obito turned to Madara and said, "If you want to be my grandpa, what's in it for me?"
Madara froze.
"…Benefits?"
Obito spread his hands in exasperation.
"Of course. Why would I agree to be someone's grandson without getting something in return?"
Rubbing his nose, Madara found himself at a rare loss for words.
In the shinobi world, countless people would cry and beg to become his grandchildren.
But this kid?
He outright refuses unless there are benefits involved.
Fine.
He had character—Madara liked that.
"What do you want in return?" Madara asked, curious.
Obito glanced around and pointed to the Gunbai lying nearby.
"I want that fan. It looks pretty cool."
From his half-buried position in the ground, Black Zetsu let out a mocking chuckle.
Uchiha Obito, you're so naive.
That Gunbai is a symbol of the Uchiha clan, the only weapon Madara took with him after breaking ties with Hashirama.
The fan carries immense sentimental value. How could Madara possibly—
"Ha ha ha! From now on, that fan is yours!" Madara declared without hesitation.
Black Zetsu's smile froze.
What the—?!
Did he just give it away?!
You're really treating him as your grandson now, aren't you?!
Obito was taken aback by Madara's quick agreement and felt a little embarrassed.
"This fan… You're really giving it to me, Grandpa Madara?"
Madara chuckled indulgently.
"Ha ha ha! When has Madara ever lied to you? I even have a scythe lying around somewhere. If you like it, you can take that too."
Obito happily picked up the Gunbai and slung it over his back.
"Thank you, Grandpa Madara! Where's the scythe?"
Madara's smile stiffened.
"…"
After 'borrowing' two of Madara's weapons, Obito was in a great mood. He patted Madara on the shoulder.
"You're alright, Madara. I officially recognize you as my grandpa. If you ever need anything, just let me know!"
Madara, for some reason, started to regret his decision.
This newly-acquired grandson of his… was a bit too cheeky.
Sensing the conversation going off the rails, Black Zetsu quickly stepped in.
"Madara-sama, Obito-sama, shouldn't we discuss the details of your cooperation?"
Obito glared at Black Zetsu.
Look at you, so impatient!
Are you that eager to meet your mother?
…Actually, I wouldn't mind meeting her too. I even have some bold ideas—
(Readers: Isn't your family tree convoluted enough? Trying to become the ultimate ancestor, are we?)
Madara gestured for Obito to sit down.
"Obito, your 'Akatsuki' organization should have members capable of capturing Tailed Beasts, correct?"
Obito nodded slightly.
"Yes, but I suggest delaying the plan for now. Three-Tails hasn't been reincarnated yet. Moving too soon would alert the major villages."
Madara snorted in mild irritation.
"Hmph. With you and me working together, what's there to fear from the world's elites? Let them come—I, Madara, would welcome the dance."
Obito patted Madara's shoulder.
"Grandpa, our goal is world peace. Let's avoid unnecessary bloodshed. I believe everyone has the right to enjoy a perfect life in the Infinite Tsukuyomi. Since we're waiting for Three-Tails anyway, why rush?"
Madara frowned in thought.
His grandson's words… seemed to make sense.
After a moment, he nodded slowly.
"Very well… We'll wait."
Obito grinned.
"A true sage knows patience, and you, Grandpa Madara, are unparalleled in wisdom."
Hearing his grandson's elaborate flattery, Madara's frown eased.
"Of course. However…"
Madara's tone grew thoughtful.
"However, staying here alone is quite dull…"
Obito laughed.
"If you're bored, Grandpa, I can visit often for some sparring or conversation. Or we could go out—maybe soak in some hot springs."
Madara, satisfied with the answer, nodded.
"Hm, alright."
After chatting a while longer, Obito stood up.
"I should head back for dinner. I'll visit again soon."
"Take care," Madara said, watching Obito leave.
As his grandson's figure disappeared, Madara's expression turned contemplative.
He had three reasons for winning over Obito.
First, to secure his loyalty and expedite the Moon's Eye Plan.
Second, he genuinely liked the boy and found him entertaining.
The third reason, however, was something even Madara found hard to admit.
He didn't want to be alone after everything was over.
For years, he had walked a solitary path, isolated from his clan and the Leaf Village.
Later, he had spent decades in a dark underground lair, surviving only for his dream.
Once his dream was realized and everyone entered their ideal world, he alone would remain in reality.
His life would lose its purpose… its meaning.
At that time, having a grandson by his side didn't seem so bad.
Besides…
Hashirama had a granddaughter.
There was no way Madara would let himself be outdone.
