Chapter 33: 33. Mystery Deepened
Uchiha Ryuei left immediately after understanding the situation without lingering any further.
Feeling completely confused, Uchiha Gin couldn't piece together any useful truth from the scant clues he had.
After weighing his options, he decided to first focus on the task at hand.
Since he had figured out that the files were organized by color, sorting them became much easier, and in no time, he had the chaotic scrolls neatly categorized.
Looking at the three piles of scrolls in different colors before him, Uchiha Gin moved on to the next step of sorting.
The scrolls not only needed to be categorized by the dungeon, but each prisoner's record had to be clearly marked and listed in an index for precise reference.
After some thought, he decided to start with the green scrolls.
"Shimura Jinji: Member of the Shimura clan. Poisoned the water source in the Uchiha territory, causing the deaths of 23 Uchiha clan members. Skilled in wind release and poison."
Too despicable. This one belongs on the first level.
"Sarutobi Takinosuke: Member of the Sarutobi clan. Ambushed the Uchiha supply unit, resulting in 12 deaths and 5 lifelong disabilities. Skilled in fire and earth release, as well as summoning."
Too ruthless. Must be placed on the first level.
"Yamanaka Kazuo: Member of the Yamanaka clan..."
After flipping through several green scrolls, Uchiha Gin noticed that most of these criminals were from well-known clans in the future.
It seemed that even in the Warring States period, the growth of civilian ninjas was difficult, with most of the standouts coming from clan ninjas.
There weren't many green scrolls. Those imprisoned in Dungeon One were all deeply guilty criminals.
This type of criminal was generally strong, not easy to capture, so there were only a dozen or so.
After quickly sorting the green scrolls, Uchiha Gin checked the capture records, most of which were from over six years ago, with no suspicious individuals worth noting.
Scratching his curly hair, Uchiha Gin turned his attention to the blue scrolls, hoping to find some valuable clues.
Unfortunately, halfway through, no suspicious individuals were found.
Most of the criminals in the blue scrolls were from small clans or were rogue ninjas, with limited strength. Their crimes mainly involved gathering intelligence or ambushing isolated members of the Uchiha clan.
Upon reviewing everything, Uchiha Gin found that the heaviest crime in the blue scrolls was committed by Kaguya Jousuke. However, due to mental issues, he could not communicate effectively and was relegated to Dungeon Two.
Dungeon Two had significantly more scrolls than Dungeon One, and Uchiha Gin's eyes felt sore and his head started throbbing after reviewing just half of them, reminding him of how he had hated going to work in his previous life.
Work should be balanced with rest. Uchiha Gin, comforting himself, set the work aside and closed his eyes to relax.
While he was resting, a cautious knock sounded on the door.
"Come in."
Upon hearing the knock, Uchiha Gin immediately opened his eyes, grabbed a scroll, and pretended to work.
It was Uchiha Mitsu, whom he'd met yesterday. Mitsu carefully scanned the room to ensure no one else was present before sighing in relief when he saw only Uchiha Gin.
"Lord Gin, you're truly dedicated to your work. You're a role model for us all."
Seeing Uchiha Gin holding a scroll and looking so serious, Uchiha Mitsu immediately flattered him.
"Oh, it's nothing. I'm just doing my duty."
Uchiha Gin modestly waved it off.
"May I ask, Sir Mitsu, what brings you here?"
"Lord Gin, you flatter me. Just call me Mitsu."
"Don't worry about it, Mitsu. What brings you here?"
Seeing no one else around, Uchiha Mitsu stepped forward and whispered to Uchiha Gin, "Lord Gin, I've uncovered some clues regarding the task you gave me."
After receiving Uchiha Gin's task yesterday, Uchiha Mitsu immediately set to work, inquiring at each of the three dungeons. Finally, luck favored him, and he managed to get some information from an older prison guard.
"Please, go on," Uchiha Gin raised his eyebrows, thinking that Mitsu's efficiency was quite impressive—finding clues within just a day.
"According to an older guard, this dungeon didn't always have the layout it has now."
As he spoke, Uchiha Mitsu pointed at the dungeon map on the wall, indicating the area between Dungeon One and Dungeon Two.
"There used to be four dungeons here, but about six years ago, Elder Hiro had one of them decommissioned, leaving only the three we see today."
Uchiha Mitsu drew a circle around the empty space between Dungeon One and Dungeon Two to show where the fourth dungeon used to be.
"So, if it's decommissioned, that means it's no longer in use, right?" Uchiha Gin asked, thinking logically.
"I don't know if it's still in use, but the old guard said that before the decommissioning six years ago, someone was secretly held there," Uchiha Lucha said mysteriously.
"If it was a secret, how does he know?" Though the news of a secret prisoner was enticing, Uchiha Gin was skeptical about how this old guard knew so much.
"Ah, I didn't ask about that," Uchiha Mitsu was momentarily speechless.
He hadn't considered why the guard would so easily divulge such secretive information to a stranger, even if he hinted that he was a confidant of the clan leader's nephew.
"Forget it. What else did the old guard tell you?"
This mysterious old guard was starting to make Uchiha Gin feel uneasy. The timing of his appearance was just too convenient.
"He said that once the person was locked up, they never came out again. Shortly afterward, Elder Hiro declared that the dungeon was too old and had it decommissioned."
Uchiha Mitsu swallowed, trying to moisten his dry throat.
"Who was imprisoned there?"
Could it be the group that attacked the Uchiha territory six years ago?
"I asked the guard, but after telling me that much, he wouldn't speak to me anymore."
Uchiha Mitsu said, feeling a bit embarrassed.
"Where is this old guard now?"
With this faint lead, Uchiha Gin wasn't ready to give up.
"He's in Dungeon Three, doing janitorial work due to personal reasons."
Uchiha Mitsu hesitated before continuing.
"What's the problem?"
"The old guard is blind."
Uchiha Mitsu admitted, avoiding Uchiha Gin's gaze.
???
A blind man is the one who knows all this? That makes the reliability of this information questionable.
No wonder Lucha had found the information so quickly—he hadn't even spared the blind.
"Thank you, Mitsu. Let me know if you find anything else."
Since the source was an old blind man, the information was likely unreliable, as such a secretive operation couldn't be known by a lowly guard.
"Of course, it's my honor to serve you, Lord Gin."
Uchiha Mitsu responded with a look of humility.
Furrowing his brow, Uchiha Gin recalled the memories of the original owner of his body.
Although the original had an eccentric personality and sometimes used his status as the clan leader's nephew to bully other clansmen, he wasn't excessively cruel to those who meant him no harm. So why did the average clansman fear him so much?
"Mitsu, how do the other clansmen usually view me?" Uchiha Gin asked.
Caught off guard by the question, Uchiha Mitsu's eyes darted nervously, unsure how to answer.
While his interactions with Uchiha Gin over the past few days had changed his impression, there was always the possibility that Gin was testing him.
"Mitsu, given our current relationship, you can speak freely."
Uchiha Gin smiled warmly, patting Uchiha Mitsu on the shoulder to reassure him.
"If you insist, I'll be honest."
After a moment of hesitation, Uchiha Mitsu bit the bullet and met Uchiha Gin's gaze with a determined look.
Steeling himself, Uchiha Mitsu carefully chose his words and finally said, "As far as I know, Uchiha Gin is simply an idiot by birth."
