~ With Shisui ~
Shisui found himself in the Mountain Zone at the exact spot where he'd first been pulled into Umbra Noctis. The transition from the endless twilight of that shadow realm to the bright midday sun of Earthland was jarring, but not unpleasant. He took a moment to steady himself, then smirked at the empty air around him.
"First try. Not bad for someone who supposedly needed more practice." He said aloud, his voice carrying a note of satisfaction.
The mockery was directed at the Nocturnae, as he knew they were probably watching him. It felt good to have that small victory, even if it was purely symbolic.
As he stood there, Shisui became aware of something new. His senses had changed, evolved in ways that were subtle. The shadows around him weren't just absent light anymore. They were pockets of space, doorways that connected to something larger. Each one felt like a potential path, a route he could take if he chose to step through.
Shadow Walking would let him move in and out of these shadowed spaces, becoming one with the darkness itself. Shadow Jumping was more dramatic, allowing him to leap from one shadow to another even when they weren't physically connected. According to Echorim, each shadow was connected to Umbra Noctis, but only those trained in the Nocturnae's arts could perceive and use those connections.
The possibilities were intriguing, but they would have to wait. Right now, he had more pressing concerns.
"Time to get a move on."
In the next instant, he vanished from the spot.
~ With Warrod ~
The Wizard Saint sat on his usual bench in the backyard, but his posture was different from usual. In his hands, he held a magazine that he was staring at with obvious distress.
Warrod sighed, a sound that seemed to come from the depths of his soul. Almost two years had passed since Shisui had left for the S-rank mission, and the world had changed.
He only wished Shisui was still around to see what had become of Fairy Tail. The guild had found its footing again, rediscovered its strength with the return of their disappeared mages. Yet somehow, to Warrod, it wouldn't be the same without their mysterious S-class mage.
Nothing would ever be quite the same.
"Reading at this time of day?"
The voice came from directly behind him, and Warrod's entire body went rigid with shock. His forest had not warned him of any presence, had given no sign that anyone was approaching. Even at his advanced age, he maintained enough awareness to detect the arrival of someone like God Serena. Yet somehow, someone had managed to reach his house without triggering any of his natural defences.
But the voice was familiar. Impossibly familiar.
Slowly, Warrod stood from the bench and turned around. There, standing in the flesh with that same confident smile he remembered, was Shisui.
"Shi... sui?" The name came out as barely a whisper.
Shisui tilted his head, his expression shifting to one of playful confusion. "You look like you've seen a ghost, old man. What's with that face?"
Warrod didn't answer immediately. He simply stood there, staring, as if trying to convince himself that what he was seeing was real. The young man before him did not look like the same young man that had left years ago, yet something about him seemed to remain the same.
"I know I've been gone for a while, but it's not like I've been gone for years or anything." Shisui continued, his tone still light and teasing.
The words snapped Warrod out of his stupor. A huge smile spread across his face, transforming his features with genuine joy.
"Shisui! You're back!" He called out, his voice carrying all the warmth and relief of a man who had just witnessed a miracle.
Shisui gave him a thumbs up, his own excitement matching Warrod's enthusiasm. "Mission accomplished. Everything went exactly as planned. Kind of. Okay slight complications here and there but still a job well done."
"You've grown. In more ways than one." Warrod observed, his eyes taking in the changes with obvious approval.
It was true. Shisui had gained height during his absence, now standing at nearly 185 centimetres. His shoulders were broader and his presence more commanding. But it was more than just physical changes.
The aura he projected now was different, stronger, more refined. It reminded Warrod of someone else, someone whose power had always been impossible to ignore.
Silently, Warrod thought to himself that the energy radiating from Shisui was remarkably similar to what he'd felt from Gildarts Clive. The same sense of contained power, of strength that went beyond mere magical ability.
"Come, sit," Warrod said, gesturing toward the bench. "Tell me how you've been. I want to hear everything."
They settled into comfortable conversation, the easy familiarity of old friends picking up where they'd left off. Shisui talked about his experiences in the Mountain Zone. He explained about the ancient ruins he'd discovered, of the ancient barriers, formed through complex and unknown magical formulas, that likely kept something dangerous contained.
The debrief was thorough but carefully edited. Shisui made no mention of his time in Umbra Noctis, his training with the Nocturnae, or the shadow techniques he'd learned. Some secrets were too dangerous to share, even with someone he trusted.
When he finished his verbal report, Shisui reached into his pack and withdrew a scroll. "This contains the detailed layouts of the area, along with my notes and observations. Everything the Council needs to know are in here."
Warrod accepted the scroll with obvious gratitude. "Thank you. This will be invaluable for future planning."
With the official business concluded, Shisui was ready to ask about Fairy Tail. He'd been away for what felt like months, and he was eager to hear how the guild had progressed in his absence. But as he opened his mouth to speak, his eyes fell on the magazine Warrod had been reading earlier.
The headline was one that would raise multiple alarms about the actual amount of time in which he had been away. His eyes widened in shock, and in the next instant, he disappeared from his position entirely.
Warrod followed Shisui's gaze to the magazine, and understanding dawned. A smile tugged at the corners of his mouth as he imagined the scene that was about to unfold.
"Fairy Tail just got a lot livelier…" He said to the empty air.
The magazine lay open on the bench, its headline clearly visible in bold letters along with the date of publication:
SIX MONTHS LATER, WHAT'S HAPPENED TO THE FAIRIES SINCE THE DEATH OF THEIR ONLY S-CLASS MAGE?
FEBRUARY X791.

Teaser for Chapter 86
Laxus was the first to sense the danger. Years of combat experience had honed his instincts to a razor's edge, and those instincts were screaming warnings now. He felt the presence behind him a split second too late as cold metal pressed against his throat.
The kunai drew a thin line of blood as it held steady against his neck.
"I don't like it when people attack my family" A voice said from directly behind him.
