Chapter 53: Chapter:53
Maroni leaned forward, placing both hands on the table, his tone condescending.
"You said... am I right?o be precise, Mr.Pupet Master?"
Hirito's expression darkened instantly. How many people had Penguin sold his information to?
"Don't misunderstand me, Mr. Puppet Master. I didn't deliberately dig into this. It's just… you know, gangs like the Two-Face Gang, which seem to rise rapidly but are actually unstable, tend to have leaks. It's not surprising that some information slips through the cracks."
So there's a traitor in the Two-Face Gang.
"Aren't you afraid I'll inform Harvey Dent that you're working against him?"
"Of course, but I think a man who managed to use the Joker to escape Arkham under Batman's nose and built a large gang afterward is worth the investment."
Maroni grinned.
So he's not just after the Titan Venom—he wants me too.
Hirito chuckled inwardly. Isn't he thinking too far ahead?
"This isn't the only offer you have, is it? If you truly had an informant in the Two-Face Gang who could provide this kind of intelligence, you wouldn't be struggling against Harvey Dent and his men so much."
Maroni froze. Was this guy mocking him on purpose, or was he just a blunt thug who spoke without thinking?
"The offer comes from Mr. Carmine Falcone. We want to work with you, Hirito. All we need from you is a betrayal at a crucial moment—set Harvey Dent up, and when the dust settles, the territory of the Two-Face Gang will be divided among the three of us. Mr. Falcone is offering one hundred million dollars as a commission."
Hirito closed his eyes and tapped the table with his fingers.
One hundred million dollars.
He had never seen that kind of money before.
And the territory…
The land the Two-Face Gang controlled was immense. Even if Falcone took the lion's share, the leftovers would still more than double the size of the Hogg United's current holdings.
But should he accept?
If Falcone succeeded in destroying the Two-Face Gang, half of Gotham's underworld would fall under his control.
And that was a problem.
Hirito thrived in chaos. The more unstable Gotham's underworld remained, the more opportunities he had to rise. If Falcone monopolized the city's criminal empire, Hirito's gang would be swallowed whole in the long run.
More importantly, Harvey Dent wasn't easy prey.
Before becoming Two-Face, he had been the hero of Gotham, someone even Batman had believed in. A man destined to become the light of the city, only to be crushed by the very corruption he fought against.
Even as a villain, he built a vast criminal empire through sheer willpower. He was no ordinary gangster. He was a survivor.
Even Maroni, who once ruled Gotham's underworld, had managed to claw his way back after being dethroned by Two-Face.
Harvey wouldn't go down without a fight.
And if Hirito sided with Falcone and they failed…
Well, that was a scenario he didn't even want to think about.
Besides, he still needed Harvey Dent.
Not just for political leverage but for access to Victor Fries.
Freeze's technology was priceless. Hirito had been obsessed with his low-temperature weaponry ever since he'd learned about it. A freezing gun with lethal precision? He needed that.
Hirito tapped his fingers against the table, eyes still closed. After several minutes of silence, he finally spoke.
Maroni had already lit a cigar, watching him closely. As soon as Hirito opened his eyes, Maroni exhaled a thick puff of smoke and asked,
"So? Have you made up your mind?"
"I'm sorry," Hirito said, crossing his legs. "The offer isn't good enough. Staying with Harvey Dent benefits me more."
Maroni didn't react at first. He took another slow drag of his cigar. Then, with an almost amused tone, he asked,
"So, does that mean you'll go running to Harvey Dent with this information?"
"That depends on how much you're willing to pay to keep me quiet."
Maroni chuckled. "You really are a piece of work."
"That's a compliment for a gangster, right? Thanks."
Maroni put down his cigar and pulled a pistol from his pocket.
"Killing you here would achieve the same result."
Hirito didn't flinch.
"Killing someone in Penguin's restaurant?" He smiled. "Aren't you afraid that if Cobblepot and Two-Face team up against you, even Falcone won't be able to protect you?"
Maroni smirked, flipping off the pistol's safety. "As long as you give him enough money, Cobblepot won't care."
Damn, Penguin really would sell out anyone for the right price.
"You came alone?" Hirito raised an eyebrow. "You don't actually think you can kill me with just that pistol, do you?"
Maroni hesitated for a fraction of a second.
It was all Hirito needed.
"Whoosh!"
A small, white object shot out from beneath the table, striking Maroni's hand.
Wisdom Tooth No. 1.
The first puppet Hirito had ever made in the DC world. Crafted in Arkham, it was crude—built from his own teeth, nails, and hair—but incredibly compatible with his chakra.
Back then, he hadn't needed it to escape Arkham, thanks to the Joker's chaos. But now?
It was perfect for moments like this.
"Argh—!"
Maroni dropped his pistol, clutching his injured hand.
Hirito wasted no time.
Grabbing Maroni by the hair, he slammed his head against the table—hard. Blood trickled down the man's forehead.
Maroni struggled, but Hirito's chakra-enhanced strength overpowered him easily.
The door burst open. Several of Maroni's men in black suits stormed in, guns raised.
