Naval Gacha System: It's Time To Monopolize The Seven Seas!

Chapter 305: | 305 | The Lost Refugees of a Sunken Kingdom

A month ago, a massive group of refugees amounting to over ten thousand beastfolks had emerged from the sea borders between the United World Government and the Frontier. Their ships were battered from the rough seas as corpses laid beside the decks of their vessels. It was an unfortunate sight, a tragedy brought about by the sinking of their island.

---

Within the violent and cold waters of the Frontier, a fleet of vessels comprising of deteriorating wooden ships traversed the brutal sea with a tinge of hope guiding them to salvation. At the front of the fleet was the last battleship of the navy, commandeered by Chief Yajer, the sole naval captain of the Kingdom of Kaer. His final mission and command was to lead their people to the future.

As he navigated the sea with the helms and guided what remained of their kingdom to the paradise rumored to be at the end of the horizon in the east, an adjutant standing beside him couldn't help but questioned. "Chief Yajer, will the so-called paradise really let us in?" His words resounded, however it was ultimately silent. Only the naval captain could hear his voice.

Yajer furrowed his eyebrows as he wasn't delighted by the questioning tone of his adjutant. But he understood the latter's worries. Even if the paradise existed, the question remains whether those inside of it would let them inside. After all, what could they bring other than hungry people? It was the saddening and humiliating state of what remained of the kingdom. Yet, it was the truth.

"I understand your worries, Adjutant. But it was the majesty who has told me about the paradise and how they accepted anyone who requires their help. According to rumors, the paradise had taken control over half of the Ferus Sea, signifying their strength." Chief Yajer responded to the adjutant after a few thoughts passed through his mind.

"Over half of the Ferus Sea? Wait, weren't the Colonial Dominions in control over that area? How could that be? Is the paradise merely the Colonial Dominions luring us beastfolks to be enslaved by them?" The answer of the chief didn't calm the adjutant as it did the opposite. It was understandable since it would be difficult to believe that their greatest adversary would fall.

Centuries had long passed since the beastfolks were forced to withdraw towards the Frontier where the ancient kingdoms dwelled. Even their kingdom had no choice but to pay tribute towards these countries for the sake of protection. Otherwise, they wouldn't be simply invaded by the Colonial Dominions. The ancient kingdoms would also plunder them to set an example.

"It may be difficult to believe, Adjutant. Nonetheless, it is the truth. Those from the paradise call themselves the United World Government. They have forced the Colonial Dominions out of the Ferus Sea, taking sovereignty of over half of it. The country consisted of both beastfolks and humans, living harmoniously together, as hard as it may be to believe." Chief Yajer expounded.

Hearing the explanation of the chief, the adjutant could only nod in understanding. No wonder the majesty had commanded the chief to sail towards the paradise. If the rumors were to be considered as the truth, it may be the only path for them to have a foreseeable and bright future. Otherwise, the ancient kingdoms would enslave what remained of their population.

"But can we really reach their in time?" The adjutant glanced at the battered wooden ships behind them. Food was becoming a scarcity, and all of them would starve to death in a month. The moment they reached the paradise, there would be nothing but lone floating ships filled with desolation and the bones of those that stood upon it. "Our supplies are running out."

"That is why we must reach it as quick as possible. Otherwise, what remain of our kingdom would sink into the sea." Chief Yajer furrowed his eyebrows as he was determined to reach the destination that was the paradise. There was no going back as what dwelled behind them was a future of tragedy and suffering. A fate that was worse than death. A destiny that would forever tarnish their legacy.

"Understood, I will assure the accompanying ships." The adjutant nodded in agreement as the people were becoming restless in the long-voyage to nowhere. To those who were ignorant, it was akin to a voyage that would conclude in their sinking of their people to the abyss of the sea. But for those who understand the path, it was the one and only future.

"I appreciate your assistance, Adjutant. We must unite against the challenge and obstacles that we face, or we will be consume by the onslaught of waves that is as ruthless as our greatest adversaries." Chief Yajer glanced at the adjutant and uttered with resolved. He hadn't eaten for days now, but he remained determine. It was astounding to see how much the mind could defy its body.

Two weeks later, a quarter of ships within the fleet had been lost to the see. Pirates would raid them, and some would willingly sacrifice themselves to buy time for the fleet to reach the paradise. Thousands of people have died to the sea, and those who survived were restless, doubting if they even could reach the so-called paradise. After all, from the looks of it, their end was inevitable.

Chief Yajer stood at the bow of his ship, leading on the thin railings. His body had gotten weaker as exhaustion was beginning to consume his mind. The ache of his stomach and limbs were calling out to him. It was as of they were reminding him that he was dying at this very moment. But regardless of their complains, he was determined to reach the destination.

"Chief Yajer, another ship has fallen behind. They have given up." Behind him was an adjutant who had last the glimmer of hope that had once brightened his gaze. What remained was a husk of a man who had survived tragedies after tragedies in the harrowing seas of the Frontier. Death was creeping in to them, and there was nothing they could do about it.

Hearing him, the chief sighed and muttered. "Leave them be... It is their choice to give up in this voyage and wait for death in the middle of nowhere. A destination is better than nothing. Otherwise, we might as well kill ourselves." The words of Yajer was straightforward. Those who wanted to die can die, but those who wished to live can follow him.

"The Frontier is a treacherous place. Even before our kingdom sunk into the ocean, we rarely sailed beyond our reefs. Sea Leviathans roamed the abyss of our waters, and pirates sailed above it. It is a place where the ordinary won't survive and thrive. " Chief Yajer continued as his hunger ate him from the inside. His beastly instincts were awakening, yet his eyes remained clear.

"You are correct, Chief Yajer. I merely hope that we can reach the destination of our voyage. As long as a single one of us can reach it, the sacrifices along the way would be worth it." The adjutant mumbled to himself, which Yajer clearly heard. "We will reach it, Adjutant. Not only one of us, but all of us. I will not give up even in the face of death. If it requires my life, I shall do so with glee."

"I shall do the same, Chief Yajer." Even though the adjutant had lost his hope, he had admired the determination of the chief that seemed to be unbreakable amidst the most grueling weight of the world. He wanted to be like Yajer, who could shoulder the heaviest of expectations with resolve instead of despair. Though, It was the last thing that he had ever uttered to the chief. After all...

A few weeks later, only half of the original naval fleet remained above the surface of the brutal sea. The wooden and battered ships drifted alongside the waves as everyone laid on the ground in exhaustion and hunger. Chief Yajer rested beside his helm, drinking whatever was left from his liquor. He felt his determination waning by the moment as despair was sinking into his heart.

More people have sacrificed themselves to the seas, and he could only watch while navigating the naval fleet through the treacherous waters of the Frontier. Above them was a blackened and listless sky, the gale was getting stronger, which meant that a storm was about to consume them. Perhaps, this may be their last moments before sinking into the abyss of the sea.

Forgotten by everyone and everything.

"Am I right, Adjutant?" Chief Yajer uttered and no one answered. His eyes flickered open as he watched the sailors lying unto the decks. Some barely alive, some were corpses. Islands couldn't be seen as the sea seemed to stretch endlessly into the horizon. Weeks have passed since they started their voyage into the end of the east. But the sea appeared to be never-ending.

"I forgot... You have already completed your duties." He mumbled to himself as his adjutant had sacrificed himself to save a ship from being eaten by a Sea Leviathan. The adjutant used himself as bait and lured the monstrous abomination away. He had accomplished his duties as such his sacrifice should be honored. But will it even matter in the end?

It will...

As long as I am alive.

Even though his mind had sunk to utter despair, a flicker of resolve kept his heart blazing with determination. He mustn't give up. For the kingdom, for those that sacrifice themselves, and for those that trusted him. Standing up with great effort, his legs trembled as he held the helms tightly beneath his claws. He must guide them until the end.

For he was Yajer, the last chief of Kaer.

"I mus-"

Before he could continue, a radiant light gleamed from the heavens, illuminating the naval fleet. Above them were ships of steel, soaring across the stormy skies like behemoths that had conquered the skies. It was their salvation, there was no doubt about it anymore. They had reached their paradise.

The United World Government.
