Chapter 51: Something Blooming

The soft hum of machinery and the faint scent of chemicals lingered in the air as Ben and Gwen stood side by side in the dimly lit lab of Tennyson Dynamics. The overhead lights cast a warm glow over their workspace, illuminating the delicate circuit boards and prototype energy cells they were working on.

Gwen, with her sleeves rolled up and a streak of grease on her cheek, carefully adjusted the electrode placement on the experimental battery prototype. Ben, arms crossed, observed her work with a mix of admiration and curiosity.

"That should increase the energy efficiency by at least 12%," Gwen mused, tightening a screw.

Ben nodded, impressed. "Not bad, Stacy. You might just be a genius."

She smirked, wiping her hands on a rag. "Might be? I thought that was already confirmed."

Ben chuckled, shaking his head. "Alright, alright, you're a genius."

There was a comfortable silence between them—a quiet understanding that had formed over the months since Gwen had joined Tennyson Dynamics as an intern. She wasn't just another employee; she was his friend, his equal, someone who challenged him in ways others didn't.

And, if he was being honest with himself, she was a whole lot more than that too.

Clearing his throat, he hesitated for a moment before casually saying, "Hey… you wanna grab something to eat after work?"

Gwen froze mid-movement, the tool in her hand pausing over the circuitry.

Slowly, she turned to face him, stepping just a little closer. The corners of her lips curled upward as she leaned in slightly, her blue eyes glinting with mischief.

"Are you asking me on a date, Ben?" she teased, her voice smooth, playful.

Ben felt his face heat up immediately.

He quickly looked away, rubbing the back of his neck. "W-what? No! I mean—come on! It's just dinner." He coughed. "As a boss… to an employee. Y'know, being a caring boss and all."

Gwen raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. "Mmm-hmm."

Across the lab, a voice cut through the air, snickering.

"Huh. Funny how we never get invited to these 'caring boss' dinners."

Ben snapped his head toward the source, finding a couple of engineers at a workstation nearby, grinning like idiots.

A few others joined in, chuckling.

Ben cleared his throat and tried to maintain his composure, but his cough came out awkward, which only made Gwen giggle.

"Alright, alright, get back to work, all of you!" Ben grumbled, but the teasing smirks around the room didn't fade.

Gwen shook her head, her laughter soft, her expression warm.

"I'd love to, Ben," she finally said.

Ben's heart skipped a beat, but before he could react, she added—

"But my dad's picking me up today."

For a split second, he almost forgot to respond.

He managed a nod, masking his disappointment with a casual shrug. "No problem. Another time, then."

Gwen smiled, the kind of smile that lingered even after she looked away. "Another time."

Big Brother's Betrayal

Ben pushed open the mansion doors, rolling his neck as exhaustion clung to him like a second skin. The only thing he wanted was to collapse onto his bed—maybe even eat something first—but as soon as he stepped inside, he froze.

Emily was waiting for him. Arms crossed, foot tapping impatiently, and a glare sharp enough to cut through steel.

Oh… crap.

Ben scratched the back of his head, playing dumb. "Uh… hey, Em. What's up?"

Emily narrowed her eyes. "Don't 'what's up' me."

Ben sighed, already knowing where this was going. "Look, if this is about—"

Emily cut him off, voice sharp. "You said you'd come to my school today, Ben. You promised."

Ben hesitated. "Right… about that—"

Emily threw up her hands, angry but more frustrated than anything. "Because you didn't show up, the principal called Mom and Dad instead! He told them everything! And guess what?"

Ben winced. "...They weren't happy?"

"Duh!" Emily snapped. "I got scolded for fighting, even though that jerk totally deserved it, and now Mom cut my allowance for a whole month! A month, Ben!"

Ben rubbed his temple. "Okay, okay, I get it. But in my defense, I was really busy today."

Emily scoffed. "Busy? Doing what?"

Ben quickly scrambled for a solid excuse. "Uh… I had a meeting. With… some big companies."

Emily narrowed her eyes suspiciously. "Oh, really? That's interesting."

She took a calculated step forward and, in a sickeningly sweet tone, added—

"Because I asked your assistant."

Ben's stomach dropped.

Emily grinned like a cat who just trapped a mouse. "And guess what she said?"

Ben swallowed hard. "...What did she say?"

Emily's smirk widened. "That you weren't in any meetings. You were just with Gwen. The entire day."

I need to fire my assistant.

Ben coughed into his hand, avoiding eye contact. "W-well, that's just… inaccurate reporting! Fake news!"

Emily leaned in, grinning. "Mmhmm. Sure, big bro. You were totally not just staring at Gwen the whole time, being all shy and awkward."

If this were an anime, a giant arrow would've pierced straight through Ben's heart.

Ben groaned, rubbing his face. "You're making stuff up now."

Emily shrugged. "Doesn't matter. You still ditched me. So…"

Ben exhaled, already seeing where this was going. "What do you want?"

Emily's eyes sparkled mischievously. "Give me your card."

Ben's brow twitched. "Why would I just give you my card?"

Emily's smirk turned devilish. "Or… I could go online and post #Ben10SimpingOverAGirl."

Ben froze.

The dark marks of frustration appeared on his forehead like a defeated anime protagonist.

With a crooked, forced smile, he slowly reached into his wallet, gritted his teeth, and handed over the card.

"Take it, my sweet sister. After all, brothers work so their sisters can enjoy life. Who else am I earning for, if not you?"

Emily snatched it happily. "Exactly! Glad we're on the same page."

As she skipped away, humming in victory, Ben slumped onto the couch, staring at the ceiling in defeat.

"...I just got extorted in my own home."
