On an Isolated Island

Chapter 26: Chapter 26 (Daniel's Illness)

The chimes of her doorbell rang incessantly, unable to wait as her mind swirled with worry. Daniel, barely able to stand, mustered his strength and walked slowly to open the door. The moment he did, Izla couldn't hold herself back—she threw herself into his arms, weeping as though pleading with him not to leave her alone in this cruel world.

Daniel felt her pain and the turmoil within her. He gently took her hand and sat her down beside him, reassuring her that it was only a cold, brought on by his lack of precaution. The poor girl cried out of fear of losing him. Daniel had no choice but to calm her, wiping away her tears with his hand and promising her that he would never abandon her, no matter what it took.

She had given his life meaning after his days had once been monotonous, empty, and dull. Izla had come into his life, bringing with her a love he desperately needed, making him feel that someone cared for him and feared losing him.

Izla stood and headed to the kitchen to prepare a warm vegetable soup for him to regain some of his strength. Despite his reluctance, he eventually took the soup from her hands, yielding to her insistence to finish it completely. She also gave him his medicine and carefully prepared his bed. How surprised he was when she suggested staying the night to take care of him. Joy shone clearly in his eyes, though he reminded her of her aunt, who might worry about her.

Izla called her aunt and explained that she was at John's place because he was ill and needed care, so she would stay the night. Her aunt agreed, but Izla overheard George saying to his mother:

"Who is this person she left me for, rushing to see him in such haste?"

Izla ended the call once her aunt granted permission, avoiding further conversation to not hear what George might say. She knew her cousin was someone who would be difficult and would not leave her in peace.

She resolved to keep her love a secret, not letting anyone know about the bond she cherished and hoped would remain confined within their shared world. Daniel was her only songbird, pecking at the love she offered from her hand while she spread her soul for him with absolute generosity. Her heart was no longer hers alone; she now shared it with the one who had given her his heart and soul in return.

Despite the fear that gripped her, Izla vowed to defend her extravagant love and never let an outsider intrude on their universe, shattering the most beautiful moments she'd ever known. Yes, she would protect that love that had begun on the shore of a secluded island.
