Chapter 20: The Marines’ Response -18
The Fleet Admiral's roar was so loud that the entire office seemed to tremble slightly.
The Marine soldiers who had come to deliver the newspapers were so terrified by the Marshal's fury that they stood frozen, trembling, unable to utter a single word.
At that moment, the office door swung open, and in came the Hero of the Marines—Vice Admiral "Iron Fist" Garp, as if to save the day.
"Hey, Sengoku, don't go scaring the rookies. What's got you so worked up this time?"
As he spoke, Garp walked over to the Marine, patted him on the shoulder, and told him to leave.
The soldier looked at Garp with deep gratitude, as if he'd just been granted a royal pardon, saluted them both, and hurried out of the office.
Once the young man had left, Garp casually strolled around the room, eventually finding the hidden bag of okaki behind the books on the shelf.
Amid Sengoku's seething glare, Garp calmly sat down on the long couch, crossed one leg over the other, and began munching on the rice crackers with ease.
As expected, his actions diverted all of Sengoku's rage toward him.
"You damn fool, Garp! If you have time to steal okaki, go hunt down pirates instead!
The Marines are in this sorry state because of freeloaders like you!"
Elsewhere, Fleet Admiral Kizaru suddenly sneezed. "Ah-choo! Huh? Am I catching a cold?"
Back in the office, Sengoku slapped the newspaper on the table with force.
"Look at today's headline—Crocodile, one of the Shichibukai, defeated!
And to make it worse, Morgans published it in his paper without consulting the government first!
This is a direct slap to the face of both the World Government and the Marines!
The defeat of Crocodile will diminish the public's trust in the Shichibukai system, which in turn will shake their faith in the government.
Do you realize the implications of this?!"
His anger was completely unrestrained. But as usual, Garp didn't seem to take it seriously—he only heard the part that interested him.
"Hahaha! That arrogant Crocodile got beaten? That's hilarious!"
Sengoku's face twisted in fury.
"Garp, you idiot! Did you hear the important part?!"
But Garp just kept laughing, and finally, just before Sengoku lost his mind entirely, he wiped a tear from his eye and grew slightly more serious.
"So who beat Crocodile? Arrogant as he is, he's still a Logia-type Devil Fruit user—Sand. It's not easy to bring someone like him down."
Sengoku's face darkened as he flipped the newspaper to the front page, pointing at a photo of a man standing next to a woman.
"This guy. If I remember correctly, his name is Peter."
"A young man who appeared out of nowhere—and our Marine Intelligence Division has no information on him whatsoever."
"Peter?" Garp echoed, surprised. "Never heard of him."
He then looked closely at the photo, particularly at the tail behind Peter, tilting his head and muttering:
"That tail... Could he be from the Mink Tribe?"
But Sengoku shook his head.
"Doesn't look like it. Minks usually have very animalistic features, but this guy looks fully human—aside from the tail.
Maybe he's an unknown species? Or a hybrid of human and beast?"
Garp stopped chewing on his okaki. His eyes widened.
"Wait, can humans and Minks interbreed?! What would their kids be called? Furfolk? Skin-folk?"
Sengoku paused for a moment, then replied thoughtfully:
"I think the proper term would be… Orcs. Humans with retained bestial traits."
Garp laughed and gave him a thumbs up.
"Orcs, huh? Not bad. Way better than 'Hairy Man.'"
Sengoku smirked with pride—until he exploded again:
"No! Who cares about his species?! Garp, you idiot, get out to sea and catch some pirates!"
Garp replied mockingly:
"Geez, Sengoku, why are you acting like you're on your period? You change moods faster than a teenage girl."
As Garp was about to walk out, Sengoku grabbed him by the collar, snatched the okaki bag from his hand, shoved him out the door, and slammed it shut.
"Hey! I didn't even get to drink a single cup of tea!"
Garp looked down at his dusty Justice coat, then spotted the other okaki bag he managed to keep. He smiled gleefully.
"Haha! Another bag of okaki! As for tea, I'll go see Kuzan."
Muttering to himself, he cheerfully made his way toward his student's office, ignoring the confused looks from passing Marines.
Back in the office, after kicking Garp out, Sengoku sat down once more, sighing as he looked at the newspaper. His gaze settled on the woman standing next to Peter in the photo.
"Crocodile's defeat and the loss of the government's prestige are manageable—but that woman… Nico Robin… she's the real problem.
She's been silent for years. Has she finally decided to come back… for revenge?"
...
Elsewhere, inside another Admiral's office not far from the Fleet's, Admiral Aokiji lay back in his chair, staring at the newspaper with a complicated expression.
"Nico Robin... from a crying little girl to a powerful, stunning woman. I hope the decision I made back then... was the right one."
He fell into deep thought, recalling the fire of that day… and the sound of that girl's sobbing.
But before he could dwell too long, just like Sengoku's office, the door suddenly burst open with a loud kick.
"Yo, Kuzan! I brought the okaki—now bring out the tea!"
Aokiji: "..."
