Chapter 79: 78: A Different Kind of Strength
November 20, 1497, Age of the Sea Circle
Orion checked the patients he had treated over the last few hours, making sure everything was in order. Then, he called over the three local doctors who had been acting as his assistants and gave them instructions on how to continue caring for the patients.
Over the past two days, Orion had been very busy saving as many people as possible on this island. After leveling up his Medicine skill, the slight suspicion he had about the affliction ravaging this island turned into certainty.
It was basically Cholera, or a disease 90% similar to it. This type of illness could cause massive deaths in a very short time, but it wasn't all that complicated to treat. If it had been an epidemic with the characteristics of the bubonic plague, Orion wouldn't have been able to do much for these people.
Once Orion determined the disease affecting the population, he began working with the city authorities to resolve the issue.
First, he focused on rehydrating the infected, as that was the only way to prevent death. Cholera was a disease that caused severe dehydration due to vomiting and extreme diarrhea, often leading to death.
Up until now, the only people who had survived on the island were those lucky enough to receive the medicinal tea—not because the tea had any medicinal effect, but simply because the liquid intake had prevented them from dying.
On the other hand, the poor souls who had received laxatives or other similar treatments had died immediately, with no chance of recovery.
When the doctors found out that several of their treatments had actually hastened the deaths of their patients, they were plunged into deep despair, but Orion didn't blame them. They simply didn't have the necessary knowledge and had done everything within their power to help.
Under Orion's leadership, the doctors organized a group of volunteers and quickly began treating the patients. He used his experience in both Medicine and Herbalism to help the people.
He first created oral rehydration solutions to stop the patients' dehydration. Most patients who weren't in critical condition improved significantly through the use of these easily prepared oral solutions.
As for those in serious condition, Orion had no choice but to administer the solution intravenously, since they couldn't ingest it on their own.
He also prepared a natural antibiotic using herbs he had in his reserves, along with a few he collected nearby with help from the townspeople.
With the antibiotic combined with the rehydration solution, the patients' condition improved dramatically, and the townspeople began celebrating the arrival of a competent doctor who could help them.
The look in their eyes whenever they saw Orion in the street was filled with respect and gratitude, and if he could have seen their favorability score, Orion would have realized it had skyrocketed.
This city was lucky that he had arrived just in time. Otherwise, a large portion of the population would have died senselessly.
The medical level on this island wasn't very high—or at least, Orion considered it quite low, since they didn't even have access to basic rehydration solutions, and he had to craft everything necessary for treatment with his own hands.
Once again, Orion reflected on the state of this world. He knew that in some regions, both medical and general technology were much more advanced, since his master Roger had told him about it.
However, cultural and technological development was not uniform in this world. It wasn't uncommon to encounter civilizations still living very primitively, while others were far more advanced and sophisticated.
Orion once again reaffirmed his commitment to establish a strong educational system in his kingdom, where everyone could learn essential knowledge. Only in this way could the world progress toward a better future, where people wouldn't be decimated by epidemics without understanding what was happening or how to solve it.
After treating the patients, Orion dedicated himself to finding the source of the epidemic. This kind of illness was caused by a bacterium that contaminated water sources, so he immediately prohibited people from drinking from the usual water sources until they had been checked and deemed safe.
This city didn't have just one water source. The main source was a river that ran nearby, but Orion analyzed the water and concluded that the problem wasn't there.
At least with the tests available to him given the limited technology, he hadn't found anything strange in the river, so he focused his search on the city's other water sources.
Aside from the large river, there were several wells in the city fed by underground water deposits. Orion checked these wells one by one until he finally found something abnormal.
The wells located to the north of the city, away from the coast, were clearly contaminated. The water in these wells was slightly murky and had a faint metallic smell. Orion had heightened senses compared to a normal person, so he could detect these differences more easily.
He immediately started investigating and didn't take long to find the problem: the cemetery.
"Mayor, how's the weather been in recent months?" Orion asked as he entered the government building after checking the water wells.
"The weather? It's been normal—pretty warm, with lots of rain," replied the mayor, not understanding why Orion was suddenly interested in the weather.
Orion sighed, confirming his suspicions, and explained the situation.
"I've found the source of the epidemic. It's caused by the cemetery outside the town," Orion said directly.
The mayor was shocked to hear this and turned pale.
"C-Could it be that we're dealing with a curse from the dead after all?" he asked, agitated.
Orion raised his eyebrows in surprise. He hadn't expected the mayor to interpret his words that way. It was definitely necessary to explain things clearly to avoid unnecessary confusion.
"It's not a curse. The disease was caused by the cemetery contaminating the underground water sources," Orion replied.
"The cemetery contaminated the water? But we've never had a problem like that, and that cemetery's been there forever," said the mayor.
"Maybe something changed recently, but what's certain is that this illness was caused by contaminated well water. My theory is that the heavy rains helped this happen," Orion concluded.
The mayor immediately gathered the rest of the city council and shared the information Orion had given him. Then, at Orion's insistence, they shut down all the city's wells—even those that didn't appear contaminated.
It was impossible to know whether the contamination might spread to those wells too, so it was better to stop using them altogether. After all, the city had a large river as a source of drinking water so these wells weren't indispensable.
As for the cemetery itself, Orion recommended relocating it, as keeping it nearby was dangerous. Something similar could happen in the future if they weren't careful.
The city government officials were reluctant to move the cemetery bodies because they didn't want to disturb the rest of the dead.
Orion didn't try to persuade them. This wasn't his kingdom, and he couldn't make decisions for them. He had already done everything he could to help, and the rest was up to the people who lived here. Only they could ensure their own safety.

November 22, 1997, Age of the Sea Circle
Orion said goodbye to the people of the city ravaged by the epidemic and received the gratitude of those he had saved. He hadn't spent much time here, but the impact of his short stay was monumental. Some events were like that—you didn't need much time to make a fundamental change in the future of a place.
As soon as Orion left the city, a notification appeared on the system screen.
*
Mission 14 – 'A Different Kind of Strength' has been successfully completed
People saved: 1235. Evaluation: A+
You have received 500 SP
Your 'Medicine' and 'Herbalism' skills have increased to Level 5
You have obtained 'Cure for Amber Lead Poisoning(Recipe)'
*
Orion felt pressure in his head, as a flood of information inundated his mind. The amount of knowledge he had obtained this time was truly overwhelming, and Orion had to concentrate to avoid losing control and having his transformation through 'Age Change' undone.
The moment he decided to help the people of this city fight the epidemic, the system had issued a related mission. To complete it, he only had to save the sick, and the more he saved, the greater the reward.
Clearly, he had done a good job, as gaining two levels in two skills was no small thing—especially when those skills were already at a high level. If he had spent SP to reach those improvements, he probably would've needed over 5000 SP, so this was definitely a worthwhile reward.
As for the cure for Amber Lead Poisoning, Orion wasn't sure how valuable it was, as he had never even heard of the disease and had no knowledge of it from his Medicine skill. Still, he trusted the system's rewards weren't useless.
Orion had completely blocked out his memories of the 'Squirrel Cheeks' and 'Water the Plants' skills.
Once he left the city, Orion used Soru and headed inland. He still had unfinished business on this island. Inside his Pocket Dimension was the group of women he had come to escort.
These women were also originally from this island but lived in a different city. Only three had been from the city struck by the epidemic, and they had already returned home to reunite with their families. Now, only the last group of women remained, and once he brought them home safely, Orion could return to his own home after a long journey.
It only took him a few hours to cross half the island and reach the city where the women were from. Upon arrival, they thanked Orion for all the help he had given them and returned to their homes, not without first inviting Orion to stay as a guest.
Many of these women were in love with Orion, drawn by his handsome and gallant appearance, and even some who were married had flirted with him during the trip.
He feared that if he accepted these passionate women's invitations, he might be attacked in the middle of the night, so he simply declined their offers and said goodbye.
As soon as the women walked away, a new notification popped up on the system screen.
*Ding*
*You have completed a secret mission*
*Mission – Heartbreaker:
Description: Children are the future. You must ensure your descendants carry your legacy. Only a charismatic and attractive man can spread his seed enough to support his ambitions.
Objective: Increase the favorability of 100 women to the point of infatuation
Reward: ??*
*You have received the passive skill 'Charm Halo (Level 0)'*
*You have received the passive skill 'Titanic Semen (Level 0)'*
*A companion bond has been unlocked: Main Wife (1)*
Orion read the notifications and felt a mix of emotions. Something was definitely off about those rewards!
He focused on the last notification, which interested him the most, and it expanded with extra details. Basically, he had gained the option to register a woman as his main wife.
According to the system, it was possible to register more than one main wife, but for now, he only had one slot available, so he would have to choose carefully before deciding.
Or so he thought, until he read further and found that he couldn't register just any woman. The woman had to have high compatibility with him and a favorability score above 90.
Currently, none of the women he had met could be selected as a main wife, so this reward wasn't very useful for the moment.
He would have to wait to find out what benefits came from registering someone under that title. After all, the last time, when he registered Giolla as a secondary wife, he had received great bonuses, so it wasn't far-fetched to assume a main wife would bring even greater rewards.
Finally, he checked the two new passive skills he had received.
*Charm Halo (Level 0): You are surrounded by a halo that increases your charm in the eyes of the opposite sex. Slight increase to the initial favorability of women. (Leveling this skill is advised with caution)*
*Titanic Semen (Level 0): A fundamental skill for any king. Fertility increased by 100%*
Orion's forehead filled with black lines, and he couldn't help cursing out loud.
"Fuck!" Orion exclaimed indignantly. "I don't need more potency than I already have!"
His body was already stronger than a normal person's thanks to his 'Strong Body' passive skill, so he didn't feel he needed this new dubious ability.
He had been careful to avoid accidents when having intimacy with Giolla—wouldn't this skill just make everything even more difficult?
Orion checked the skills screen and saw there was an option to disable the passive skill. Without hesitation, he turned it off and sighed in relief.
He didn't need the system's help to prove his prowess! Hmph!
Still… he left the other skill, 'Charm Halo,' active.
Once he finished inspecting his rewards, Orion explored the city, which was smaller than the one affected by the epidemic on the same island. He walked through the streets, browsing market stalls and buying things he found useful or interesting.
If there was something magical about this world, it was that geographically close islands could have very different cultures. Perhaps he'd find spices, medicinal ingredients, or clothes here that didn't exist even on a neighboring island.
For that reason, every time he stopped on an island and had time, he tried to explore and stock up. With the space in his inventory and Pocket Dimension, he had enough room to carry a large amount of supplies and materials.
Orion was buying a large quantity of cloth to make all sorts of clothes and uniforms back home when he suddenly caught a white light out of the corner of his eye.
When he turned, he saw the white light was coming from a little girl holding her mother's hand.
This was the first time his new ability 'Prism Eyes' had activated on a person, which he didn't find strange; quite the opposite. People were the ones with the most unseen "depth." They could be dangerous, or they could be a hidden blessing.
Orion's curiosity flared, and he decided to investigate the girl's situation. He paid for the cloth and stored everything inside his Pocket Dimension, causing the vendor's jaw to drop in shock as he dropped the money in disbelief at the sight of so many goods vanishing into thin air.
Orion paid him no mind and followed in the direction the girl had gone.
Soon, he arrived at a shoe store, where the girl's mother was happily shopping while the little one looked wide-eyed at the different styles of shoes on display.
Orion focused on the system screen and opened the kingdom shop, which used KP as currency. There was an item he hadn't bought yet but had found intriguing: Evaluation Card.
This item was a simplified version of the Insight Card and could be used on any individual. It only provided basic information and a system evaluation indicating whether the person was worth recruiting.
He spent 100 KP and immediately used the item on the girl from afar.
A new information card appeared on the system screen with the most basic data on the girl:
*
Name: Miucha Smith
Age: 5
Talent: Shoemaker (S)
Compatibility: 55%
Evaluation: C+
