Chapter 15: Chapter 15: Fang Yi’s Strength
"All right, Teacher Jabba… I'm starting now!"
Once everything was ready, Fang Yi's playful expression disappeared as he spoke seriously.
"Go ahead!"
Jabba, holding his axe, nodded in response.
More and more crew members gathered around to watch. Even Captain Roger had appeared at some point, standing there with great interest.
Shanks and Buggy also stood nearby, both staring intently. They wanted to see for themselves just how strong Fang Yi was.
After losing to him earlier, Shanks had slowly realized that Fang Yi probably hadn't used his full strength during their fight. If Fang Yi had used those strange long-range attacks from the start, Shanks would've lost in an instant.
That's why now, he wanted to carefully observe Fang Yi's true power.
Whoosh!
Just as Jabba nodded, Fang Yi had already fired his first arrow. At the same time, he didn't remain still but immediately began moving, as if terrified of Jabba's counterattack.
However, Jabba didn't go after Fang Yi right away. He simply deflected the arrow with ease and crouched slightly, preparing to strike at any moment.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
Arrows flew from every direction, and Fang Yi kept changing positions as he fired, not giving Jabba a single chance to counterattack. He also cleverly used his positioning and timing to create the illusion that there were multiple attackers firing at once.
"Interesting!"
Jabba smiled slightly. With a quick step, he suddenly shot forward like a hunting leopard. He broke through the arrows with brute force and didn't charge toward Fang Yi's current position. Instead, he accurately predicted Fang Yi's next move and dashed straight toward the spot Fang Yi was heading for.
Yet Fang Yi remained calm. As he shifted direction, he fired another arrow mid-movement without missing a beat.
Seeing Fang Yi's composed reactions and smooth, flowing movements, both Buggy and Shanks were left dumbfounded.
Thankfully, Fang Yi hadn't used his bow earlier. Otherwise, Shanks realized that he wouldn't have even been able to touch Fang Yi and would've been riddled with arrows like a porcupine. He didn't have Jabba's level of strength to handle that.
"Kid, if this is all you've got, I'm going to be disappointed!"
Jabba casually dodged another arrow, grinning as he taunted Fang Yi.
Fang Yi smiled faintly but didn't answer. From the start until now, he had already fired over ten arrows. He was simply waiting for that one crucial moment when his skill finally activated.
Against someone like Jabba, Fang Yi knew he had no chance of winning through normal means. Only by triggering his skill could he deliver a surprise blow.
And the only way to activate it was to keep attacking, since triggering the skill depended purely on probability.
This was exactly why he kept moving and shooting constantly.
He didn't bother with fancy techniques for each shot because Precision was his greatest weapon. As long as it triggered, it would catch Jabba off guard.
Whoosh! Whoosh!
He fired two more arrows in quick succession. Although Jabba deliberately slowed down to prolong the fight, the distance between them had now shrunk considerably.
"Huh?"
Suddenly, Jabba let out a muffled grunt. Despite dodging Fang Yi's arrow as usual, he suddenly froze mid-movement, as if he'd been hit.
But before he could react, Fang Yi's second arrow was already upon him.
Clang!
This time, Jabba didn't dodge. He raised his arm and forcibly deflected the arrow.
"Armament Haki!"
Fang Yi's eyes lit up as he noticed Jabba's arm coated in black Haki.
He immediately understood—his first arrow must have triggered his skill. Otherwise, Jabba wouldn't have reacted that way.
That's why Jabba used Haki to defend against the second shot.
"Kid, what did you just do to me?"
Jabba looked down at his abdomen. There was no sign of injury, yet the sensation from earlier felt exactly like being pierced by an arrow. He couldn't help but ask.
This was the special effect of Fang Yi's Precision skill. While it guaranteed a hit, it didn't cause physical injury in the traditional sense. Whether using a bow, sword, or even a gun, even if the skill triggered, the enemy would only feel the impact—there wouldn't be any blood or external wounds.
For instance, if Fang Yi slashed Jabba's shoulder with a sword and the skill activated, Jabba would feel the pain as if he'd been struck, even if his axe blocked the attack. There wouldn't be a wound, but the sensation of being hit would remain.
However, if Fang Yi targeted fatal spots like the neck or heart, and if the opponent wasn't fully guarded, even someone as strong as Jabba could be incapacitated in a single blow. A normal person would likely die instantly.
This was precisely why Fang Yi preferred using ranged weapons.
The probability of triggering his skill wasn't reliable. While 20% sounded low, it applied to every attack. There could be times when every shot triggered it, and other times when none did throughout an entire battle.
If he fought up close with a sword or bare hands, there was a real risk he'd be taken out before his skill even activated.
Furthermore, opponents like Jabba, Rayleigh, or Roger could lessen the damage even when struck in vital spots, thanks to their high defenses.
But against people like Shanks or Buggy, it was a different story. Even if they were cautious, they could not currently defend effectively. If Fang Yi hit their weak points, they'd be done for.
This was also why Yamon hadn't warned Jabba before the sparring match. He believed that although Fang Yi's abilities were strange, Jabba could handle them just fine.
"Teacher Jabba… don't tell me you've never noticed this ability of mine before?"
Fang Yi smiled slightly as he replied.
Only two people aboard the ship had noticed this ability of his—Yamon, who taught him archery daily, and Peterm, the sniper, who had been the first to discover it.
It was Peterm who had initially recommended that Fang Yi learn to use a sniper rifle after noticing the strange trait in his attacks.
But Fang Yi ended up learning archery from Yamon instead, which left Peterm disappointed for quite a while.
"Looks like I underestimated you! But now… I'll get serious!"
Jabba chuckled, and in the blink of an eye, his entire figure vanished from sight.
Even with his enhanced eyesight, Fang Yi could barely catch glimpses of afterimages closing in on him at terrifying speed. He wanted to move but found his body sluggish, unable to respond quickly enough.
Bam!
Jabba's knee slammed hard into Fang Yi's abdomen, followed by a vicious elbow strike to the back of Fang Yi's neck.
Thud!
Fang Yi collapsed to the ground, completely unconscious.
"Puhahaha! Brat, you've still got a long way to go!"
Jabba laughed heartily as he looked at the unconscious Fang Yi, clearly pleased with himself.
However, the surrounding crew all looked speechless.
You know he's just a kid, yet you still went all out?
That seemingly simple combo Jabba had just performed—barely anyone on the entire ship could withstand it. Aside from a handful of elite fighters, everyone else would've ended up just like Fang Yi.
Yamon couldn't help but chuckle.
This guy… did he forget why he started this sparring match in the first place? Wasn't it just to test Fang Yi's strength? And now you've knocked him out cold—what's the point of testing anything anymore?
Seeing Yamon's expression, Jabba's smug laughter froze midair. He, too, suddenly realized what he had just done.
He'd gotten so caught up in the fight—and maybe a little embarrassed—that he completely forgot about holding back, accidentally knocking Fang Yi out cold.
Thus, the sparring match ended in laughter all around.
Fang Yi regained consciousness not long after. Surprisingly, he was quite satisfied with the result.
At the very least, he had forced Jabba to take him seriously and had successfully kept some of his trump cards hidden.
That's right—he hadn't used all his techniques during the fight. After all, this was just a friendly sparring session between crewmates. There was no need to show everything.
After this battle, Buggy stopped challenging Fang Yi every day like before.
He finally understood—he wasn't anywhere near Fang Yi's level yet. Every time Fang Yi fought him, it was merely for amusement.
Realizing this made Buggy furious. He felt that Fang Yi had been toying with him all along.
Shanks, too, felt similarly frustrated. Before their fight, Fang Yi had promised to go all out, but judging from Fang Yi's performance against Jabba, it was clear that he hadn't used his full strength against Shanks at all.
As a result, both of them became even more determined to train harder.
Then one day, they accidentally overheard a conversation between Fang Yi and Yamon that revealed the truth.
"Hey, kid… I haven't seen you hanging around with Shanks and Buggy lately," Yamon remarked with a grin, casually sipping his drink as Fang Yi practiced his archery.
Shanks and Buggy happened to pass by and overheard the conversation. Normally, they wouldn't eavesdrop on crewmates—it felt disrespectful—but since they were being mentioned, they instinctively stopped to listen.
"Those two? They're busy training hard to try and beat me," Fang Yi said with a chuckle, drawing his bow as he spoke.
"Hahaha! Serves you right! That's what you get for deliberately making them think they were close to beating you! Now your act has been exposed, and they're ignoring you, huh?"
Yamon laughed wickedly, showing no intention of helping his student out of this situation.
"Hahaha… It wasn't like I was trying to toy with them," Fang Yi replied, still smiling. "If I had just crushed them outright, what would they have gained from it? It's not like I need two underlings. Only by giving them hope will they stay motivated to train. Out here on the sea… anyone without strength is as good as dead."
Yamon was momentarily stunned, and so were Shanks and Buggy, who remained frozen where they stood.
They had never imagined Fang Yi was thinking that way all along.
