One Piece: I, the Strongest Intern of the Roger Pirates

Chapter 38: Chapter 38 – A Careless Defeat

Boom!!

"Hahaha… Whitebeard! I found you! Today, I'll take your head for sure!"

Bucky, gripping his longsword, laughed as he charged toward Whitebeard.

Once the two pirate ships drew near, chaos erupted in a fierce battle.

Bucky couldn't believe his luck—he had stumbled straight into Whitebeard.

At this point, the Roger Pirates had the upper hand.

Bucky was convinced they were winning easily, so even when he encountered Whitebeard, retreat never crossed his mind.

"Bucky! Don't be careless—this guy's not easy to deal with!"

Shanks warned with a serious face.

They were no longer the little tagalongs following behind Fang Yi.

And this time, Fang Yi wasn't around to back them up—he was off fighting elsewhere—so the task of facing Whitebeard fell solely to them.

"Gurararara… You two little brats again? Where's the archer? Why didn't he come?"

Whitebeard grinned playfully.

"Hmph! Dealing with you is more than within our ability!"

Bucky pointed his longsword forward and rushed in.

"Bucky!"

Shanks had no choice but to follow.

Bang! Bang!

With one sweep of his naginata, Whitebeard knocked both of them to the ground.

"Newgate!"

Just then, Roger arrived on the scene. He'd been slightly delayed by Jozu, but he wasn't worried about Shanks and Bucky—after all, the battle between the two crews felt more like a sparring match. No one was aiming to kill; the defeated simply sat aside to rest and made room for others.

"Gurarara… Roger, I've been waiting for you!"

Whitebeard's eyes lit up as he slashed toward Roger with a vastly different level of force than he had used on the kids earlier.

Boom boom boom…!

Crash crash crash…!

As the captains clashed, the defeated gathered on the Whitebeard Pirates' deck to watch.

Bucky, Shanks, Marco, and Jozu all sat at the edge, spectating.

"Aren't you guys also interns like Fang Yi? Why is he still fighting, while you two are sitting here?"

Marco tossed them an orange as he grinned.

"You're a full-fledged crew member yourself. Why are you sitting here?"

Bucky shot back, refusing to admit defeat even in words.

"Even though Shanks and I joined the crew not long after Fang Yi, his talent is on a whole different level."

Shanks smiled bitterly.

Bucky didn't argue this time—he'd already been thoroughly convinced by the many beatdowns Fang Yi had given him.

"That kid's a monster… Awakening Haki at such a young age…"

Marco grumbled. He truly thought he could beat Fang Yi this time, but once again, he was soundly defeated.

Shanks and Bucky exchanged looks.

They wanted to say that Haki wasn't even Fang Yi's scariest ability—his archery skills were far more terrifying.

Especially that strange, cheat-like ability where even if you dodged or blocked the arrow, you'd somehow still be hit. Shanks had suffered countless times during training.

But Marco hadn't experienced enough to fully realize how dangerous Fang Yi truly was.

Meanwhile, on the battlefield—

"Shave!"

Fang Yi vanished just as Thatch launched a sneak attack.

"Tch… What a tricky one."

Thatch frowned as he spotted Fang Yi reappear with his bow already aimed at him.

"Flame Arrow—Fire!"

Whoosh!

A fiery arrow shot toward Thatch—another one of Fang Yi's skills.

Flame Arrow (LV.2) – 192/300:

Launches a fire-imbued arrow that deals fire damage to the enemy.

Much like Ice Arrow, this was a skill he could now actively trigger—no more relying on RNG.

Clang!

Thatch managed to block the arrow, but still staggered back several steps and dropped his dagger.

He looked stunned.

Despite blocking the shot, his arm burned in pain as if he had been hit.

The arrow that should've missed still left its mark.

"Hehehe… lucky hit."

Fang Yi smirked. He knew exactly what happened—his high-level "Precision" skill had likely triggered, causing an unavoidable hit.

But instead of shooting again, Fang Yi slung his bow onto his back and charged in with a dagger.

He wasn't just looking to win—he wanted to tag as many Whitebeard commanders as possible for his reward system.

Other than Whitebeard and Marco, the future commanders like Thatch and Vista were perfect targets.

"You've got guts, kid. A bowman going for close combat?"

Thatch chuckled.

"No, you're just underestimating me."

Fang Yi replied, striking.

Thatch dodged and kicked, only to have Fang Yi block it and counter with a swift dagger slash.

"Whoa…"

Thatch realized quickly—Fang Yi wasn't weak at close range either.

They separated, and Thatch eyed him curiously.

"How old are you anyway? You look about Marco's age, but you fight like a veteran."

"Don't worry, if we're comparing age, you'll die before me."

Fang Yi laughed.

Thatch's face darkened—Marco was right. The kid had a real mouth on him.

"Take this!"

Fang Yi faked a strike, then disengaged. His goal now was Vista, who was fighting Yamon nearby.

He ran up and said,

"Teacher Yamon, let me handle this guy. You should take a break."

"Haha, alright then. Be careful, he's not weak."

Yamon chuckled.

Vista frowned. Fang Yi? A kid? And a bowman?

This wasn't going to be a challenge…

"Better not underestimate me, or you'll regret it."

Fang Yi smirked and charged.

"Fine then. I'll deal with you first, then take care of her."

Vista raised his twin blades—not Western swords yet, but two long katanas.

Clang clang clang…

Their blades clashed rapidly—Vista began to take Fang Yi seriously.

"Tch… what bad luck."

Fang Yi grumbled. His "Precision" skill had a 40% trigger chance, yet none of his hits had activated it.

"Getting distracted during battle? You'll die like that, kid!"

Vista suddenly exploited an opening.

"Crap!"

Fang Yi realized he was too late to dodge. He barely managed to block with his dagger, but it threw him off-balance, putting him on the defensive.

Up close, triggering skills were harder.

Unlike arrows, which always targeted the enemy, in melee, a block or deflection could cause the skill to target the opponent's weapon instead, wasting the trigger.

Clang!

"Time to rest, kid."

Vista disarmed him with a double-blade slash.

Though Fang Yi didn't want to admit it, facts were facts.

He retrieved his dagger and stood up.

"Next time… you'll be the one going down."

Vista shrugged. Then turned to Yamon,

"Shall we continue?"

"Hahaha… See what happens when you lose focus in a fight? That's your lesson, kid!"

Yamon laughed heartily.

Fang Yi pouted and ignored her, walking back to join Shanks and Bucky in the corner.
