Chapter 53: Chapter 53: Quarreling Boys
"Wow, it really is the Navy. Why would the Navy be here?"
Several boys looked nervously at the place where they had originally planned to set sail, now occupied by a naval officer.
"Look at you guys, all scared. It's just one Navy officer. With guts like yours, how do you expect to become pirates?"
The youngest boy scanned his companions with a look of disdain, mocking them without hesitation.
"Shanks, I think you're asking for it. Keep it up, and we won't hold back."
The eldest boy snorted disapprovingly. With a potential enemy at hand, there was no room for internal discord.
"Don't rush. Let's first figure out what's going on. The Navy wouldn't come here without a reason."
Their island wasn't exactly a prosperous place. Under normal circumstances, the Navy wouldn't bother showing up here, so the sudden appearance of this officer left the boys both surprised and uneasy.
Jon, who was deeply engrossed in experimenting with his abilities, didn't realize that a group of boys was secretly observing him from a distance.
Failing yet again to create the wooden puppet he had in mind, Jon decided to temporarily give up and instead took out the seeds given to him by Dorag.
"Let's test the effects of these seeds."
For Jon, it wasn't strictly necessary to use seeds to produce plants. His abilities allowed him to create plants directly. However, using seeds was faster and more efficient. Additionally, for plants he hadn't previously encountered, seeds provided a way to study and reproduce them.
Growing seeds was incredibly easy for Jon, thanks to his powers. He scattered a dozen seeds on the ground and quickly activated his ability.
The seeds took root almost immediately, sprouting rapidly. Some blossomed, others grew leaves, and a few turned into bizarre, unfamiliar plants.
Within seconds, nearly all of the seeds had grown into mature plants, except for two that didn't sprout.
"Two dead seeds. As expected, they couldn't grow. The rest sprouted normally—three types of flowers, some grasses, and mostly trees."
Examining the plants closely, Jon noted that the tallest one was a tree about ten meters high.
It was a species Jon had never seen before, somewhat resembling camphor, though not particularly rare. Still, Jon hadn't encountered it in this world before.
The other trees were similarly unfamiliar but didn't differ significantly from the ones Jon could already create with his abilities, offering him little practical advantage.
As for the grasses, most were weeds, though two stood out with their striking purple and blue colors. However, aside from being visually appealing, they didn't possess any noteworthy properties or combat potential.
The three flower varieties were equally unimpressive. While they might be useful for decoration if Jon wanted to play gardener, they lacked the utility he sought.
What Jon needed wasn't ordinary plants but ones with formidable or unique abilities.
He scattered the remaining seeds and activated his powers again, filling the area around him with all kinds of strange and diverse plants. Jon carefully evaluated each one.
After a thorough assessment, he found only three plants with any potential utility:
A flower with paralyzing toxins. When in bloom, it released pollen that could paralyze those who got too close. In severe cases, it could render someone completely immobile.
A massive tree. Under Jon's influence, it grew to over twenty meters tall and seemed capable of growing even larger. Its numerous, flexible branches resembled those of a willow tree but were far more abundant and durable, making it useful in large-scale battles.
A fruit tree. This tree produced fruit about the size of an adult's fist. While Jon didn't recognize the fruit, the tree could bear a large quantity, making it a potential food source.
The fruit tree's usefulness was primarily practical, but Jon already had the ability to create various fruit trees, like apple, pear, and peach trees. While they were helpful for sustenance, their combat utility was limited, and they were relatively easy to create.
Dorag's seeds had expanded Jon's plant repertoire but offered only marginal improvements to his combat capabilities.
Indeed, powerful plant seeds were not easy to come by.
Jon knew he wasn't yet ready to venture out to sea alone. But once he had the strength and experience, he vowed to explore regions rich in primeval forests, searching for plants that could aid him.
As far as Jon knew, the world of One Piece was filled with towering trees and extraordinary plants, just waiting to be discovered.
Immersed in his own world, Jon remained oblivious to the shock he had caused others.
"D-Did you see that? That Navy guy—is he some kind of monster?"
One of the boys, trembling all over, pointed in Jon's direction, where the once barren land was now teeming with plants. What had been a desolate stretch of rocks was now a lush, vibrant scene.
Clearly, the Navy officer had created it all.
The eldest boy swallowed hard. "Is he… really a monster?"
"Are all Navy officers this powerful?"
The boys exchanged glances, fear evident in their eyes.
"If we go to sea, will we have to face Navy officers like him?" one of them asked nervously.
The question sent a shiver through the group. The thought of becoming pirates only to encounter such monstrous Navy officers terrified their young minds.
"Look at yourselves. With courage like this, how do you expect to become pirates?"
The youngest boy, Shanks, fired off another round of ridicule.
"Shanks, you're really asking for it today."
Embarrassed and annoyed, the boys turned on Shanks, shouting at him in frustration.
"You're always bragging. Why don't you go take down that Navy officer? If you can do that, we'll take you with us to sea."
Shanks snorted disdainfully. "If I could do that, I wouldn't need you guys. I'd head out to sea on my own. You're not fooling me."
Despite his young age, Shanks was sharp and talented, often outmatching the older boys in their group.
Although he didn't know exactly how strong the mysterious Navy officer was, Shanks knew he couldn't win.
The other boys grumbled but ultimately ignored Shanks, huddling together to strategize.
"What should we do? With that Navy guy there, we can't set sail."
"But our boat's hidden over there. If we don't go that way, we'll lose it. Without the boat, how will we get to sea?"
"Then we wait. Once the Navy guy leaves, we'll make our move."
"Right. Let's just wait it out. He can't stay here forever."
"Agreed. Let's hide and be patient."
"…Okay."
