Chapter 55: Chapter 55: The Intersection of Fate
"What are you kids doing here?"
Jon quickly approached the group of boys. Seeing their nervous expressions, he relaxed further, but curiosity prompted him to ask.
He had specifically chosen a deserted area, a barren stretch of land, so the unexpected appearance of these boys surprised him.
Looking up at the towering figure of Jon—over two meters tall, clad in a navy uniform and draped in a Justice coat—the boys felt a massive pressure descend upon them. They were so tense that they couldn't even speak.
Finally, the youngest among them, Shanks, took a deep breath and answered, "We came to the beach. We were planning to swim, but then we ran into you, sir, and we didn't dare approach."
Jon was astonished as he looked at Shanks. He found it amusing that while the others were too nervous to speak, this smallest boy managed to respond in such an organized manner.
"Swimming at the beach? You boys really aren't afraid of danger. But are you afraid of me?"
Jon was puzzled. He could clearly sense their fear, yet he was a marine, not a pirate. Why were these kids so scared of him?
"No, we're not..."
Aside from Shanks, the other boys stammered, unable to form a complete sentence.
Jon felt awkward. Did he really look that intimidating?
In a good mood, Jon decided not to dwell on their reactions. He simply said, "The beach is too dangerous. You boys should head home quickly. I need to be on my way too."
With that, he smiled at the red-haired boy and walked off.
The boys stood there, dumbfounded, watching Jon leave. They remained frozen until his figure disappeared entirely.
"That marine was terrifying!" one of the boys finally exclaimed.
Shanks rolled his eyes. "What's so terrifying about him? He was friendly the whole time. Honestly, you guys are just cowards."
"Good thing he didn't find out what we were planning. So, are we still going to..."
"Shut up."
The oldest boy cut him off sharply before he could utter the word "pirates." With a serious expression, he said, "Let's pretend this didn't happen. Our plan will be postponed for now. We'll discuss it again later."
"Make sure you include me when the time comes!" Shanks said loudly.
"We'll see," the others replied vaguely.
The boys were deeply embarrassed by their earlier behavior. Compared to Shanks, who was only nine years old, their reactions seemed cowardly, and they felt humiliated.
Meanwhile, Jon had no idea what he had just missed. If he had only asked the red-haired boy's name, perhaps the notorious pirate "Red-Haired" Shanks would never have come to exist.
Jon's New Training
Jon quickly returned to the warship. As soon as Garp arrived, Jon sought him out to learn the technique of Life Return.
"You want to learn Life Return?"
Garp looked at Jon with surprise, astonished both that Jon knew about Life Return and that he wanted to learn it.
"Yes," Jon said with a firm nod.
Garp frowned. "Life Return is an advanced martial art. Only those with a certain level of physical fitness can even attempt to learn it. It also requires a high degree of control over your body. It's not easy to master."
"There are some marines who can use Life Return, but most of them have only grasped its basics, controlling only a few parts of their bodies. If you're just looking to learn the basics, I wouldn't recommend wasting your time. But if you want to push this ability to an advanced level, it will take a long time. Are you sure you want to pursue this?"
Life Return was difficult to train, even for Garp, who admitted he hadn't perfected it.
"I'm sure. I feel that Life Return complements my abilities. Learning it might greatly enhance my power."
Jon's answer was resolute. Although he didn't fully understand Life Return yet, he was confident it would not disappoint him and would help him develop techniques he'd long envisioned.
Seeing Jon's determination, Garp nodded. "If you're certain, I'll teach you. But keep in mind, getting started with Life Return is the hardest part. Once you've mastered the basics, things will get a bit easier. However, reaching an advanced level is extremely challenging."
"I'm ready for it," Jon replied confidently.
Jon's primary goal was to use Life Return to complement his Devil Fruit abilities. He wasn't aiming for mastery—just enough to meet his needs.
From that point on, Jon's training regimen shifted. In addition to his daily exercises, he began learning Life Return under Garp's guidance.
"It's rare to see the old man so serious," said Dragon, watching Garp and Jon train. Garp would often strike Jon while teaching him, showing rare dedication.
Garp's adjutant agreed. "Indeed, the Vice Admiral seems to have high hopes for Jon. It's been a long time since he's taught anyone so earnestly. The last time was when he trained you."
Dragon's mouth twitched. When his father had trained him, Garp had been much rougher, far more brutal than he was with Jon.
Returning to Base
The warship set sail, leaving the West Blue and returning to the Grand Line, heading for Marine Headquarters.
After more than ten days, the warship reached its destination. Jon bid farewell to Garp and his crew.
Garp had already taught Jon the methods for training Life Return. Whether Jon could succeed depended entirely on his own efforts, as mastering it required time and patience.
Jon wasn't in a rush. Back at his quarters in the strategy department, he resumed his usual training with the female marines and dedicated the rest of his time to studying Life Return.
Half a Year Later
In the blink of an eye, more than half a year had passed.
"In a few months, I'll turn twenty. It's been over two years since I arrived at Marine Headquarters. I wonder how my parents are doing. I really miss them."
Standing in his garden, surrounded by blooming flowers, Jon felt a deep longing for home. It had been over two years since he left, and now he was a Marine Headquarters lieutenant. In the four seas, he could already serve as a branch commander.
Perhaps because he hadn't returned home for so long, Jon found himself thinking about his parents and hometown more frequently, which left him restless and distracted.
However, as a Marine Headquarters officer, he couldn't leave the base without specific orders—let alone cross the Grand Line to return to the South Blue.
Jon had grown from a boy into a young man. At 2.3 meters tall, he cut an impressive figure, with chiseled features and resolute eyes.
Recently, Jon noticed something unusual: many of the female marines under Vice Admiral Tsuru's command had started flirting with him. This left him so flustered that he avoided training with them altogether, spending the past two months secluded in his garden.
