Chapter 62: Chapter 62: The Navy's Predicament
Jon followed the naval captain ahead of him as they walked through the G-1 base, eventually arriving at a cluster of buildings.
"Knock knock!"
The captain brought Jon to the door of a meeting room and gently knocked.
"Come in."
Pushing the door open, the captain immediately reported, "Admiral Sengoku, Lyons Jon has been brought here."
Sengoku nodded when he saw Jon. "Good. You may leave now."
"Yes, sir."
Jon quickly scanned the room and noticed that all the individuals seated around the round table had at least the rank of rear admiral. This made him feel a bit uneasy. He had no idea why Sengoku had summoned him here or what his intentions were.
"So, you're Jon."
Sengoku observed Jon with curiosity. This was his first time meeting Jon, and he was intrigued by this recruit that Zephyr had praised so highly.
Sengoku had already met Sakazuki and Borsalino, but he was eager to see what kind of talent Jon possessed to be deemed by Zephyr as someone who could one day rival them.
"Yes, sir."
Jon responded respectfully. It was also his first formal meeting with Sengoku.
Sengoku appeared to be in his forties, wearing round glasses that resembled a frog's eyes. His long beard was braided into a twist, and he was dressed in a white navy uniform and the Justice coat.
To Jon, Sengoku radiated an air of elegance. He seemed like a refined and sophisticated leader.
"I've called you here because I need your help with an important matter," Sengoku said bluntly. "I've heard that you have the ability to stimulate plant growth—is that correct?"
"Yes," Jon answered, still unsure of Sengoku's intentions.
"Can you do the same for crops?"
"Yes, as long as it's a plant, it should work."
Sengoku's face lit up with joy as he continued, "If we asked you to produce crops, how many people's food supply could you support?"
"This…"
Jon hesitated, finding the question difficult to answer. He was indeed capable of producing crops like corn, sweet potatoes, wheat, or millet—essentially any plant. However, he had never conducted any experiments to determine exactly how many people he could feed.
At that moment, Tsuru spoke up. "Sengoku, it's unlikely he can give you a clear answer to that question. Here's what we'll do—let's wrap this up for today and let him rest for the night. Tomorrow, we can take action. In the meantime, have people gather as many crop seeds as possible as quickly as they can."
Jon noticed that while Tsuru was speaking, she subtly gave him a meaningful look. He immediately understood and echoed her words.
"Yes, I've never tested it before, so I can't give an exact answer."
Sengoku thought for a moment, then agreed. "Alright, we'll proceed like that. First thing tomorrow, we'll have people bring the seeds to you."
He then turned to Rear Admiral Lucien and instructed, "Immediately mobilize personnel to purchase crop seeds—buy as many as you can."
"Yes, Admiral Sengoku." Lucien swiftly accepted the order.
"For now, we'll adjourn. The other matters can wait until after we resolve the food issue," Sengoku announced, officially ending the meeting. Originally, there were other topics on the agenda, but compared to the issue of food, they all seemed trivial. Right now, his top priority was ensuring a stable food supply, but that would have to wait until tomorrow.
The attendees dispersed, but Jon had already left a lasting impression on the rear admirals and vice admirals present. If Jon's ability turned out to be as effective as they hoped, his future in the Navy would undoubtedly be limitless.
"Wahaha! Jon, if you succeed this time, I'll share in the glory. After all, I'm the one who recommended you!"
Garp, with his signature boisterous swagger, walked over to Jon with a smug expression, winking at him exaggeratedly.
Jon couldn't help but laugh. "Then I'll have to thank you, Vice Admiral Garp."
"No need to thank me. It's only natural for an elder to look after the younger generation," Garp said, clearly pleased but pretending to act indifferent.
"Alright, Garp, enough nonsense. Jon, come with me."
Tsuru appeared and interrupted Garp, giving Jon a simple command before turning to lead the way.
"Vice Admiral Garp, I'll be leaving now," Jon said, bidding Garp farewell before quickly catching up with Tsuru. Tsuru was his direct superior and someone he trusted more than the others.
Tsuru brought Jon to her assigned office. Once they were alone, with the door shut, she finally spoke.
"What do you think about what just happened?"
"Uh…"
Jon hesitated before cautiously asking, "Admiral Sengoku asked me to produce crops. Could it be that we're running low on food supplies?"
He hesitated because Sengoku specifically asked about crops, which could all be considered food. But he was confused—was the Navy really facing a food shortage? The Navy was vast, spanning the globe. How could they possibly run out of food?
"You're correct. We're running low on food," Tsuru confirmed, surprising Jon.
Jon couldn't believe it. "The Navy? Running low on food? That's ridiculous! Even if there's no food, couldn't we just hunt some Sea Kings to eat?"
"If only it were that simple," Tsuru said with a sigh, shaking her head. She could see that Jon had no understanding of the situation.
"Do you know how many people are stationed at this base? Excluding the civilians on the island, there are over 60,000 troops here. Do you have any idea how much food 60,000 soldiers consume daily? And during wartime, the demand for food skyrockets."
"The Navy's reach is indeed vast, but this is the New World, not Marineford. Supply lines here aren't as efficient as they are at headquarters. Transporting food across the Red Line isn't as easy as you think. Sometimes, even if you have money, you can't secure enough food. And let me ask you this—do you think the Navy's funding is endless?"
"Even the civilians on the island are rationing their food to support the soldiers. Our supplies aren't as abundant as you might imagine. This war against the pirates has been going on for nearly two years. How much food do you think can withstand such prolonged consumption?"
"Pirates are humans too. If they can't win, they'll run. Should we chase them or not? If we do, it might turn into a prolonged campaign. If we don't, they'll just return and wreak havoc again in no time."
"Sometimes, it's not that we don't want to eliminate the pirates—it's that it's not that simple. Especially with the larger pirate crews, they're incredibly difficult to deal with. They consume vast amounts of resources and manpower, and the results aren't always what we hope for."
Tsuru had lived through the era of the Rocks Pirates. She knew how troublesome major pirate crews could be. Most people only remembered how the Rocks Pirates were defeated by the Navy and Garp, but they didn't know how many times the Navy had studied, fought, and failed against them before finally succeeding after many years.
"As for your suggestion about hunting Sea Kings, it sounds good in theory, but right now, we're stretched so thin dealing with the pirates that we can't spare any forces to hunt Sea Kings. Besides, Sea Kings mostly live in the Calm Belt or deep seas, which makes finding them difficult."
"Even if we managed to kill one, transporting it would be another huge challenge. Ordinary ships couldn't handle large Sea Kings, and how many ships do you think we have available for such a task? And not all Sea Kings are even edible. During peacetime, this might be a good idea, but during wartime, it's inefficient compared to simply transporting food."
Jon fell silent, taking in Tsuru's detailed explanation.
