Chapter 42: Chapter 42: The Eavesdropper
At this point, Tifa couldn't ignore it any longer.
She hesitated briefly, then pressed her ear against the partition wall.
Now she could hear not only the rhythmic smacks, but also the labored breathing and a sound akin to trudging through mud on a rainy day.
Tifa wasn't a clueless girl. She was already twenty years old. Even if she hadn't tasted the "meat," she had read enough books to know what a pig was... and what pork tasted like.
The realization hit her like a jolt of electricity through the wall. She staggered back, face flushed in disbelief.
They were doing that... here of all places?
Shameless!
Fury welled up in her chest. She wanted to storm out immediately but Mona was waiting right outside. If she walked out now, what would she say?
She couldn't just blurt out, "Someone's doing indecent things next door."
Mona was still just a teenager. Curious, sure, but not yet ready to understand this kind of adult world. Tifa couldn't let her be exposed to something so... indecent.
Biting her lip, Tifa slowly moved her hand away from the doorknob and forced herself to focus on trying on the rest of her clothes.
Let's just pretend they're... killing mosquitoes.
She tried to keep that idea in mind and willed herself to ignore the sounds coming from the next stall.
At least, until she heard a familiar voice whisper through the thin wall.
"It's coming... Just like that... feels so good..."
"Don't talk. Someone's outside."
It was Ethan Chen.
And 2B.
Tifa froze.
Two of the most graceful, reserved people she knew engaging in such behavior in a changing room, of all places?
She instinctively held her breath, unable to concentrate. Her mind began to drift, led astray by the rhythm of the noises. Unbidden, her imagination painted a vivid picture.
In that cramped stall, 2B's curvaceous hips were pressed against the wall. Under Ethan's movements, her expression turned hazy and dazed, her full lips parting slightly.
Ethan moved slowly, almost tenderly, teasing her with gentle strokes before suddenly thrusting harder enough to elicit a loud smack that distorted the soft flesh of her hips. The recoil would send her entire body quivering as Ethan resumed his measured pace.
The tempo intensified.
The smacks came faster and louder like raindrops drumming against a windowpane during a summer storm, scattering in all directions.
The mental image Tifa had been trying to suppress grew even clearer, more urgent. Her own heartbeat quickened, syncing with the sounds of that storm.
The thought of such force, such control it had to take an incredible amount of core strength.
And 2B... how was she feeling through all of it?
Tifa had no experience of her own to compare. What she occasionally did alone, in the quiet of the night to quell her loneliness, couldn't possibly match that.
Then came a soft, drawn-out moan that shattered her train of thought.
Suddenly, the space was quiet again only the faint sound of breathing remained.
Tifa finally let out the breath she'd been holding, exhaling heavily.
She glanced at herself in the mirror. Her forehead glistened with sweat.
And between her thighs... a noticeable patch of dampness had bloomed on her pants.
There was no avoiding it now. She'd have to buy these.
…
When Ethan stepped out of the changing room, he immediately saw Mona standing outside with her arms crossed.
"What are you doing here?" he asked.
"You tell me," Mona replied, raising an eyebrow. "You ever thought about practicing a little restraint?"
"You know how I am," Ethan said, scratching his cheek awkwardly. "I get... energetic. Gotta let off steam a few times a day, or it builds up."
That was one of the aftereffects of Life Return transforming food into stored energy required frequent release, or it created an intense, almost combative restlessness in his body.
"Well, could you not pick this place to do it? This is a public changing room! Tifa's right next door. What if she heard you?"
Mona genuinely liked Tifa. She was a warm, beautiful older sister figure someone who made the voyage feel less lonely.
After all, 2B was too aloof for casual conversation, and Ethan... well, Ethan was always looking for excuses to disrupt her reading, or sneak in a hug or a kiss.
Not that Mona disliked affection she actually enjoyed being held and kissed but there was a time and place.
A little intimacy before bed was fine. But in broad daylight? She wasn't about to join in.
After all, she was a girl who now ate three square meals a day and sometimes even overate until she felt sick. She couldn't possibly understand the hunger of a woman who had long gone without.
Which was exactly why she didn't want Tifa to be driven away by Ethan and 2B's antics.
"She probably didn't hear," Ethan replied, thinking aloud. "I was being careful. She doesn't know 2B and I were in there together, right?"
"How would I know? You want to ask her?"
"Nah. Better not." Ethan rubbed the back of his neck. "Asking would be as good as confessing."
A few moments later, Tifa finally emerged from the changing room, carrying her chosen clothes.
Her expression was perfectly composed, as if she'd heard nothing at all.
Mona walked over to greet her.
"Did everything fit? Do you need to swap sizes?"
"Some pieces were a little snug. I'll just grab the next size up."
Tifa's voice was steady, natural. As she passed Ethan, she even smiled sweetly and gave him a small nod.
But inside, her heart was pounding like a war drum.
She still couldn't wrap her head around how someone who always seemed so refined and gentle could do something so bold.
Maybe I misunderstood. There has to be another explanation... right?
But Ethan, catching her brief yet meaningful look, had his answer.
Tifa knows.
But she was pretending not to, just to spare him the embarrassment.
She's really such a kind person.
After buying her clothes, Tifa stopped by a nearby shoe shop to pick up a pair of sturdy combat boots and a set of comfortable slippers. Then they headed to the food market to restock supplies.
The ingredients they'd bought back in Shells Town were nearly used up. Time to replenish the pantry.
Even though they weren't setting sail right away and could just eat out for dinner, this was a good chance to let Tifa show off her cooking skills to see if she could take up the role of ship's chef.
Since the town's economy centered around gourmet cuisine, the produce and meats remained fresh even into the evening. Tifa carefully selected the ingredients herself, haggled with the vendor, and secured a great deal leaving with two large bags of food.
It was time to head back.
But just as they turned out of the market street, 2B wearing her tactical goggles suddenly froze.
"We have a situation. Someone's attacking our ship!"
"What?!"
Ethan's face turned serious. He was about to sprint for the docks when Mona suddenly grabbed both his and 2B's wrists.
"Tifa, grab my hand!"
"O-okay!" Tifa didn't ask questions. She reached out and grabbed Mona's delicate wrist without hesitation.
The next moment stunned all of them.
A deep, star-speckled blue magic circle appeared beneath their feet, glowing with cosmic light. A sound like ocean surf echoed in their ears, and a huge sphere of water rose up, enveloping them completely.
In the blink of an eye, the water orb burst like a bubble leaving no trace of the four inside.
Back on the busy street, passersby stared in stunned silence at the fading glow of the magic circle left on the stone-paved road.
Only after a long pause did someone finally speak.
"Where did they go? Did they just vanish?"
Another person cautiously stepped closer and tapped the glowing sigil with their foot.
"Was that... the power of a Devil Fruit?"
"Must be. What else could make people disappear like that?"
