One Piece: New Order

Chapter 111: Enel’s Research

At Sakazuki's residence, the study room.

Knock, knock, knock.

"Come in."

Sakazuki's voice sounded.

The door opened and Carlo walked in.

"Vice Admiral, you've taken over another branch."

Sakazuki let out a faint "Mm" in response. His eyes stayed fixed on the edge of a wanted poster, staring at a small figure printed there.

Seeing his odd expression, Carlo stepped closer to take a look, but there didn't seem to be anything special about it. Though the date showed it was newly issued, just yesterday.

After a moment, the vice admiral looked up. "Carlo, do we have any useless Devil Fruits?"

The man thought for a second before answering, "Hmm... we've looted a few from pirate ships over the years. There are five Zoan types, two Paramecia, but no Logia."

Sakazuki nodded. "Put three of the Zoan ones on our ship. We're heading out."

"Understood," replied Carlo.

The vice admiral stood and stretched, rolling his neck. "Come on, I want to check on Enel. That kid's been acting mysterious lately. Time to see what he's up to."

Carlo chuckled. "I actually know. He seems to be working on some kind of secret weapon and even dragged away Admiral Sengoku's foster son, Rosinante. They've been holed up in the lab every day. The admiral's been so furious, he's grinding his teeth. He finally got some time off, but hasn't even seen his son's face."

Sakazuki smiled. "That's pretty entertaining. Let's go."

He pushed open the second-floor window of the study.

Whoosh! Whoosh!

Two sharp sounds cut through the air as the room became empty.

* * *

Marine Headquarters Academy, in the room next to the principal's office.

It had now been completely transformed into a high-tech laboratory.

Sleek, metallic, orderly. Precision instruments filled the space. And with Vice Admiral Morris stationed next door, this was one of the safest places in the entire headquarters. Even if something went wrong, he could react immediately.

Inside the lab.

Sparks of electricity crackled in Enel's hand as a mechanical high-powered magnifier was strapped over his right eye while he made careful adjustments to something that looked like a small missile.

Beside him, Rosinante had both hands pressed against a mechanical sphere, steadily pouring his ability into it.

A row of already-charged mechanical balls sat next to them, neatly arranged.

Just when Sakazuki and Carlo approached the lab entrance, the mechanical door opened automatically. The sight that greeted them was a lab brimming with advanced tech.

Enel put the missile down and turned, smiling.

"Yo, Uncle. Big Brother Carlo."

Sakazuki gave Rosinante, who seemed a little nervous, a friendly smile, then looked at him.

"So, what kind of secret weapon are you working on?"

While speaking, he stepped inside.

Carlo followed behind, waving casually at Rosinante with a cheerful grin.

Enel smirked and picked up the mini missile. Then he pulled out a Den Den Mushi and handed it to Sakazuki. Taking another one himself, he walked toward a corner of the lab, dialing as he went.

As the vice admiral's Den Den began to ring, the boy spoke.

"Uncle, watch closely!"

Crack!

He crushed the mini missile in his hand.

It felt like something shot out, but at the same time, it felt like nothing did.

Sakazuki's Den Den Mushi suddenly went silent. Its eyes spun, its mouth opened, tongue sticking out like it had fainted.

The same happened to Enel's one.

Sakazuki raised an eyebrow. "Interesting."

Enel grinned and explained, "This idea came from Rosinante's ability. A magnetic field bomb. It uses electromagnetic high-powered microwaves to release directed radiation. Depending on the output, it can instantly disable communications within a certain range. It's basically a different version of the Calm Calm Fruit's barrier. After all, if no messages can get out, there's a lot you can do."

Sakazuki pondered for a few seconds, then asked, "How many people know about this thing?"

Enel responded, "Just us here, and Grandpa Morris. As for Admiral Sengoku... not sure if Rosinante mentioned it to him."

The boy quickly shook his head. "No, no. I didn't."

The vice admiral continued, "Keep this tech sealed for now. This is a very important weaponry. It can't be exposed."

Enel blinked. He hadn't thought about it like that before, but he nodded anyway.

Sakazuki changed the subject. "Once we're out at sea, I'm heading to Punk Hazard. Are you coming?"

Enel's eyes lit up. "Of course! I've got a few more ideas I want to discuss with teacher. Rosinante, come with us!"

Seeing the boy hesitate, Enel didn't give him the chance to respond.

"Enough thinking. We'll have Grandpa Morris and Admiral Sengoku informed. It's settled. Come on, it'll be fun!"

He grabbed Rosinante and dashed out of the lab.

"We're off to get ready! Don't forget to close the door!"

Shaking his head, Sakazuki walked out. "Carlo, go tell Vice Admiral Morris and Admiral Sengoku later. I'm heading to the ship first."

Carlo's face fell. "Eh?! Why do I have to be the one to tell them?"

Sakazuki's calm voice echoed from the front. "I don't feel like facing those two old men when they're angry..."

Holding his forehead, Carlo shouted, "Hey, Vice Admiral, that's just unfair!"

From far ahead, Sakazuki's chuckle could still be heard.

"You're young. You still need training."

That evening.

Sengoku, who hadn't seen Rosinante all day, showed up at the academy looking for him.

Equally confused, Morris had also searched the entire facility but found no sign of the two boys.

Then the gate guard came up and explained that Vice Admiral Sakazuki had instructed him to deliver a letter only after dinner.

The two men opened the envelope.

Inside were just a few handwritten words:

[Took the kids out for a few days. Don't worry. —Sakazuki]

Sengoku's fury exploded as he crushed the letter in his hand.

"SAAAKAAAAZUKIIIIIIIIII!"

Aboard Sakazuki's warship.

While the vice admiral was eating in the dining hall, he noticed Carlo walking over with a strange look on his face, holding a Den Den Mushi.

A bad feeling crept over him as he took the snail and Sengoku's furious voice roared through the line.

A long while later, he ended the call with a bitter smile, then glanced at Carlo and sighed. "It's fine. Let's finish dinner."

He handed the snail back to the man, who still looked weirdly stiff.

Just as he took it, Sakazuki spoke up.

"Carlo, you've gotten sloppy, you took 0.1 seconds longer than usual to grab the Den Den Mushi. Your reaction's slowing down. I'll help you get back on track with some extra training later. Hurry up and eat."

Ignoring the stunned Carlo, he cleaned his plate in a few swift bites, then walked straight toward the training room.
