One Piece pirates salty life

Chapter 48: Chapter 48: Cocoa West Village

Shioyaki's expression changed instantly. He wasn't a fool like Bisara.

Like Arlong, he was a hardcore racist. Even when it came to Nami, he remained deeply suspicious of her. From the very beginning, he had opposed her becoming their navigator.

If Arlong hadn't personally insisted on protecting Nami, she might not have survived this long.

But now—something was clearly wrong.

His sharp eyes caught the detail immediately: the pirate tattoo on Nami's exposed arm was gone.

In its place was a bluish-white bird-like symbol.

She had betrayed Arlong!

Shioyaki realized it at once. Without wasting a second, he leapt overboard.

With only two fishmen left, it was impossible to confront the Straw Hat Pirates head-on aboard the ship. But in the sea—they were at an advantage. There, even two fishmen could sink a ship with ease.

"Bisara! Hurry! Nami betrayed Arlong!!" he screamed while plummeting toward the sea.

But something was wrong.

He blinked, confused. Why hadn't he hit the water?

Still midair, Shioyaki was being held there—suspended by the wind.

Back on the Merry, Nami stood with one foot resting on Bisara. She stared at Shioyaki, who was floating helplessly in mid-air, bound by the power of wind.

She wore a mocking smile.

"Now that you're here, don't leave so quickly," she said calmly. "I want to return the favor… for all the care you've given me over the years."

Though she smiled, her voice was cold and sharp—laced with fury.

Shioyaki felt the chill in her tone pierce his heart like ice.

It was over.

Somehow, Nami had gained powers—strange, frightening powers—and now, he was no match for her.

Behind her, Zoro watched with interest. Nami had become much stronger after Leo engraved the magic sigil on her body. Seeing her strength in action made his own hands itch for battle.

"Tch. How boring," Usopp muttered from the bow of the ship. He was unimpressed. "And I thought fishmen were supposed to be strong?"

As he fiddled with the cannons on the deck, Usopp felt a surge of confidence. With the tools Leo had crafted for him, combined with the blue spirit pattern engraved on his arm, he had all sorts of tricks up his sleeve now.

For instance… a cannon that could rotate and aim on command.

After watching Nami dispatch the two fishmen so easily, Luffy and the others lost interest and dispersed across the deck.

This fight had nothing to do with them. No one wanted to stick around and get caught up in Nami's fury. Who wanted to risk being whipped?

And whipped, they were.

Nami summoned a long whip made of wind and lashed Shioyaki and Bisara for over an hour.

Even though their fishman bodies were sturdier than humans, the relentless assault wore them down. Their mouths gagged, they could only let out muffled groans until they finally lost consciousness.

Only after they were barely breathing did Nami stop. She tied them up tightly and hoisted them onto the mast—like fish hung out to dry.

"Perfect," she muttered, brushing a few strands of hair from her face. "Dried fishmen."

After that, the Merry's voyage was smooth. No more enemies appeared. Even Moo, the massive Sea King that Arlong had brought to East Blue, didn't show up.

Soon, the Straw Hat Pirates reached the dock of Cocoa West Village.

But what greeted them wasn't what Nami had remembered.

The road leading to the village was desolate and withered. Fallen leaves blanketed the ground, and the path looked as though it hadn't been tended in years.

"Why… why did it turn out like this?!" Nami's voice trembled. Her eyes widened in disbelief. She hadn't returned in so long—and never expected the village to fall into such ruin.

Leo sighed quietly and stepped forward. He gently placed a hand on Nami's shoulder. In a moment like this, he didn't know what to say to comfort her.

The group walked forward in silence, each step heavy with emotion. Not a single one of them was in high spirits.

Fortunately, no fishmen appeared in their path.

If any had, they would've quickly learned the true meaning of fear.

Suddenly, a rustle from the bushes broke the silence.

"You're… Nami?!"

A rugged man emerged from the undergrowth. He stared at the group in disbelief. He had scars all over his face and a quirky windmill hat spinning atop his head.

Leo's gaze landed on the man with little interest.

This must be Ajian.

He was shocked to see Nami, especially leading a whole crew behind her.

It had been years since she came to the village. And whenever she had returned before, she would go straight to her orange grove to see her sister Nojiko—never into the village itself.

"Why did you suddenly come back?" Ajian asked, puzzled.

Nami approached him slowly, her expression unreadable. "I haven't seen everyone in so long," she said softly. "I wanted to come back before I end all this."

Ajian's eyes filled with emotion.

She missed them?

He remembered when she had been taken away by Arlong—just a little girl then. She had suffered alone for so many years. And now she said she missed them?

The thought made Ajian clench his fists.

He wanted to fight Arlong to the death.

This was the child he had watched grow up. And now, because of that monster, she had endured so much pain.

"Don't cry. I'm fine," Nami said with a small smile. "I came back to end all of this."

She then turned to her crew behind her.

"These are my companions—Luffy, Leo, Sanji, and Usopp."

Ajian's emotions were quickly replaced by confusion as he glanced at the group.

One wore a straw hat and looked completely clueless. Another had a long nose and kept looking around nervously. Two more were in suits—one blond and leering, the other calm and composed.

Ajian raised a brow.

The blond one looked dangerous. He made a mental note to warn Nami later.

But the other, the man with the calm demeanor and warm smile—Leo—seemed respectable. Among them, he looked the most… normal.

These were her new friends? They didn't seem particularly reliable.

"Alright, Ajian, I'm taking them to my house. I want to visit my sister Nojiko," Nami said.

Ajian wanted to decline, but something in her words made him follow anyway. She was here to end things. He needed to be there.

Zoro, meanwhile, had fallen asleep on the ship and was left behind to guard it. His two "little brothers"—two low-level fighters—stayed with him, since they wouldn't be of much help in a fight anyway.

As the rest of the crew walked through a wide orange orchard, a quaint little house came into view.

In front of the house stood a slender figure with short blue hair, dressed casually in a vest, trousers, and flip-flops.

She was watering an orange tree with gentle care.

Nami's eyes lit up.

"Nojiko! I'm back!!"

Nojiko turned, surprised by the loud shout. Her expression softened as she recognized her sister.

Even more surprised, though, by the group trailing behind her.

Still, she walked forward confidently.

"Hello. I'm Nojiko, Nami's sister," she introduced herself.

"What? I'm only seventeen! Can't I be a kid if I want to?" Nami huffed, clearly annoyed by Nojiko acting like a grown-up in front of her.

The group laughed lightly, easing the heavy mood. Even in such times, Nami was still the same—a fierce, stubborn girl who cared deeply.

But Leo noticed something.

Though Nami smiled and laughed, the fire in her eyes had not died down.

She had come home—but not for peace.

She had come for war.
