Chapter 14: Chapter 14: One Year
Asa searched Enel's entire house, inside and out, but ultimately found no trace of the Thunder Fruit. Reluctantly, he left, frustrated by his failure.
Hunger gnawed at him after his exhaustive efforts, and he returned to the beach to replenish his strength. Gathering firewood, he caught two fish and grilled them. The taste of cooked food was far superior to the raw, blood-laden meals he had endured in the past.
"Enel's parents didn't leave him the Thunder Fruit, which means he must have obtained it elsewhere," Asa mused, reclining on the thick branch of a tree after his meal.
With a population of about a thousand households, Asa reasoned that if any villager on Birka had the fruit, it wouldn't have ended up in Enel's possession. He quickly dismissed this possibility.
"Could it be hidden where the designs for the Ark Maxim are stored? No, that's unlikely. Enel mentioned that any villager could access that location. If not there, then where?"
Asa frowned, his sword-like eyebrows furrowing. Thinking was never his strong suit; he preferred brute force to solve problems. Yet, in his current powerless state, he had no choice but to use his mind, which irritated him.
"Based on the timeline, it will take several more years for Enel to eat the Thunder Fruit. Should I follow him and wait all that time, wasting the most vibrant period of the Blue Sea below the Sky Island?"
Though following Enel seemed the most likely way to acquire the Thunder Fruit, Asa decided to continue searching on his own for now.
At just thirteen years old, Asa had plenty of time to grow stronger. Even if he missed the most exciting events of this era, he was confident he would eventually rise to the top.
"If Blackbeard could spend two decades waiting for the Dark-Dark Fruit, why can't I wait a few more years? I've gambled everything on this rising tide, so a little patience is nothing!" Asa reminded himself, drawing motivation from Blackbeard's persistence.
Yet, deep inside, a seed of dissatisfaction lingered. Asa wasn't someone content with mediocrity. He didn't plan and calculate just to let the tides of history pass him by.
He yearned to carve his name into this great era—to perform earth-shattering feats, revel in boundless freedom, and fully embrace his time in this world.
Asa's thoughts turned to legendary figures: Shiki, the Golden Lion, still standing despite his shattered legs; Whitebeard at his prime; Garp, the naval hero; Sengoku, the wise general; and Roger, who remained atop the seas even as his health waned.
These titans had all converged in this era, each at their peak. Missing such an epoch was unacceptable.
"Three years," Asa resolved, clenching his fists. "I must acquire the Thunder Fruit within three years—before Roger becomes the Pirate King!"
Climbing to the top of the tree, Asa gazed toward the horizon, where the New World awaited. His eyes burned with determination, a fiery reflection of his unyielding ambition.
Sky Island, suspended high above the earth, experienced short days, and before long, darkness cloaked the sky once more. Asa trained relentlessly, even as his stomach growled in protest.
After pausing to prepare another meal using the hot shell he had stolen earlier, Asa ate an enormous amount of food before venturing into the jungle under the cover of night.
Methodically, he searched every cloud and tree on the island, inspecting even the smallest crevices where the Thunder Fruit might be hidden.
By the second half of the night, fatigue caught up with him. Finding a quiet spot, he lay down to rest. At dawn, he resumed his search, this time heading toward the village while avoiding the more troublesome villagers. He also continued to monitor Enel.
A month passed, then two. Half a year slipped by.
Before he realized it, an entire year had gone by. It was now 1494 in the Sea Calendar, and Asa was fourteen. His strength had visibly increased through relentless training.
His once youthful frame had grown taller, now standing at 1.8 meters. Daily fishing had honed his body into a streamlined, powerful form, with explosive strength and resilience far beyond what it had been a year ago.
Despite his rigorous efforts, Asa still had no leads on the Thunder Fruit. Frustration tempted him to abandon Sky Island altogether, but he reminded himself: if he couldn't endure this challenge, how could he face the trials of the sea?
Once again, Asa compared himself to Blackbeard, finding solace in the pirate's long wait for his prize.
In the year 1493, the Roger Pirates had withdrawn from the New World following Roger's illness. They found Crocus at Reverse Mountain, who joined their crew while tending to the whale Laboon. At the same time, O'Hara's scholars launched their expedition to uncover the secrets of the Poneglyphs, and Nico Olivia left her two-year-old daughter, Nico Robin, behind to join the mission.
While Asa's physical strength and Observation Haki had grown immensely during this time, his search for the Thunder Fruit remained fruitless.
He spent nearly every day exploring the island's jungles or monitoring Enel. His Observation Haki grew sharper, allowing him to "see" the flow of wind and extend his perception to a radius of 300 meters. Following Enel unnoticed became effortless.
Without Asa's companionship, Enel had reverted to his old self—emotionless, numb, and regularly bullied by village children. Though he did not resist, a deep-seated hatred brewed within him, one that could ignite into a raging inferno at any moment.
Asa observed indifferently. His sole focus was on obtaining the Thunder Fruit; everything else was secondary.
During this time, Asa infiltrated every villager's home, searching for clues. He scoured every tree, cloud, and corner of Birka, even inspecting the location where the Ark Maxim's designs were stored.
After an exhaustive search, Asa concluded with certainty: the Thunder Fruit was not on the island.
