Chapter 17: Chapter 17: The Thunder Fruit
The small wooden box, nestled among piles of gold and jewelry, captured Asa's undivided attention.
He moved forward as if in a trance, his calm composure completely replaced by raw excitement. Each step felt heavier, his anticipation growing unbearable.
Asa reached out with trembling hands, gently picking up the dust-covered box. Using his sleeve, he wiped away years of accumulated grime, revealing the corroded iron lock that had long since decayed, leaving a visible gap. Through the opening, he glimpsed the treasure within.
With a soft crack, he exhaled deeply and opened the box.
Inside lay a blue, pineapple-shaped Devil Fruit.
Asa's emotions erupted in a chaotic mix of joy and relief. His handsome face twisted into an expression both absurd and surreal—he looked as if he were crying and laughing at the same time.
After five years of planning, life-threatening risks, and a year of relentless searching across Birka, his dream had finally come true.
The Thunder Fruit, the fabled source of unparalleled power, was finally in his hands.
The fruit's natural lightning-like patterns confirmed its identity. Its size was small, no larger than Asa's palm, but its vivid design and delicate shape gave it an aura of otherworldly allure.
"Hoo... Hoo... Hoo..."
Asa's breathing grew heavy, his body overwhelmed with desire and anticipation.
Closing his eyes and pinching his nose, he bit into the fruit without hesitation. He devoured it entirely, leaving not a single morsel behind.
Although he knew that a single bite was enough to gain a Devil Fruit's power, Asa wasn't willing to take any chances. He wanted every ounce of strength it had to offer.
Then it hit him.
"Ugh... Ugh!"
Asa grabbed his throat, gagging uncontrollably. The fruit's taste was beyond revolting—it was anti-human.
"Ugh! What the hell is this taste?!" Asa cursed between retches. He had heard that Devil Fruits were foul, but this went beyond his wildest imagination.
No wonder even Luffy, known for his iron stomach, had called Devil Fruits worse than garbage.
After several minutes of retching with no success, Asa downed water and stuffed food into his mouth, desperately trying to rid himself of the lingering bitterness.
Slowly, his complexion returned to normal. He wiped his mouth and stood up, his lips curling into a triumphant smile.
"Hahahahahaha!"
Asa's laughter echoed across the White Sea, creating ripples that scattered the nearby sea beasts. They fled in terror, as if sensing the arrival of a predator far beyond their league.
Blue arcs of electricity crackled across Asa's body. The cabin filled with energy, causing the piles of gold and jewels to vibrate and scatter across the floor.
Asa gradually calmed his laughter, his hands tingling with electric power. With a simple thought, currents of blue lightning gathered in his palm, forming a glowing thunderball.
"Zzzzzzt!"
The sharp crackling noise echoed like a thousand chirping birds. Asa casually tossed the thunderball through the open cabin door.
BOOM!
The resulting explosion was deafening, shaking the massive ship. Asa stepped outside, brushing off the water vapor that hit his face.
Before him, on the surface of the White Sea, was a massive crater over ten meters wide. The force of the thunderball had pierced through the sky clouds above, leaving a hole that extended seven kilometers upward.
As the clouds slowly mended themselves, Asa marveled at the power he now held.
Even though sky clouds were much softer than land, the destructive potential of the Thunder Fruit was undeniable. Asa could only imagine what this power would do on solid ground.
"Thunder God's Spear!"
Lightning danced in Asa's hands as he condensed it into a two-meter-long spear. With a swift motion, he hurled it at the ship's deck.
Boom!
The spear struck with a loud crack, leaving a charred, one-meter-wide hole in the deck. The damage extended through several floors of the ship, all the way to the hull, allowing seawater to slowly seep in.
Despite his excitement, Asa knew he had only scratched the surface of the Thunder Fruit's capabilities. The true potential of this power would take time and effort to unlock.
"Lightning Teleportation!"
With a single thought, Asa's body transformed into pure electricity, allowing him to zip through the ship and reappear in the cabin.
There was still much of the ship left to explore, and Asa wasn't about to let it sink before uncovering any other treasures it might hold.
Gold and jewels meant little to him—Upper Yard had more than enough to build his future Ark Maxim. What truly mattered were items of real value: rare weapons, artifacts, or even another Devil Fruit.
Asa moved methodically, using bursts of lightning to blast open doors and floors. Within half an hour, he had explored all five levels of the ship.
Finally, he reached what appeared to be the treasure vault. Asa's sharp eyes caught sight of something extraordinary, hidden among the countless valuables.
His heart raced.
