This wasn't a matter of treating Luffy as the main character; Whitebeard clearly understood that Sengoku would never allow him to approach the execution platform.

He was too big of a threat!

If he pressed forward aggressively, who knew if that old bastard Sengoku would just kill Ace directly, leaving him with no opportunity.
