Chapter 15: Chapter 15: First Crew Bonds
"Come on, everyone! Look this way!"
The Marine photographer nervously adjusted his position, still amazed that he was taking commemorative photos for the pirates who had just liberated his base from tyranny.
"One, two, three... say cheese!"
Click!
The camera's flash illuminated the scene for a brief moment, capturing a moment that would one day become legendary across the Grand Line.
In the background was the pristine flower garden at the main entrance to Marine Base 153 - a splash of natural beauty against the imposing stone walls of the fortress. In the foreground were four young people who couldn't have looked more different.
Three boys were beaming with contagious enthusiasm, their eyes sparkling with dreams of adventure and the limitless possibilities that awaited them on the open sea. Between them was an orange-haired girl whose expression resembled that of a fish that's suddenly found itself out of the water - blank, stunned and completely overwhelmed by the chaos surrounding it.
The photograph perfectly captured what philosophers might call the fundamental disconnect between the emotional realities of different people.
"Excellent work! You have real talent behind the camera!"
Akira examined the developed photo with genuine appreciation, then offered sincere praise to the marine who'd served as her impromptu photographer.
The Marine's chest swelled with pride at the compliment - it wasn't often that someone with the power to level buildings took the time to acknowledge his artistic abilities.
"Let me see! Let me see!" Luffy bounced impatiently beside his vice-captain, unable to contain his excitement any longer.
He practically climbed onto Akira's shoulders, using his rubber powers to stretch and contort himself until he could look down at the photo from above like an overly enthusiastic monkey.
"Wow! This turned out great! Although Nami's smile isn't very obvious..." His brow furrowed in innocent concern as he craned his neck to look at their newest crew member.
"Hey Nami, aren't you the type that likes to smile a lot?"
"Smile?" Nami's eye twitched dangerously. "Hehe... sure, why shouldn't I smile?"
How could I smile in this situation?!
Her inner scream reached deafening levels as the full implications of her actions washed over her like a tidal wave.
These lunatics had just defeated a Marine captain, robbed a naval base, and were now actively taunting the World Government by taking commemorative photographs at the scene of their crimes! They'd even left the film negatives with the Marines, essentially providing proof of their own identity!
Her carefully planned life of calculated thievery crumbled before her eyes. How could she hope to collect the 100 million berries needed to save Cocoyasi Village from the Arlong pirates when every marine in the world would soon be hunting her down?
Nami gazed hopelessly at her three new 'crewmates' as they critiqued her photo with the casual satisfaction of tourists at a popular landmark.
At that moment, she understood with crystal clarity that there was a vast, unbridgeable gulf between their world view and her own.
After several minutes of animated discussion about camera angles and composition, Akira carefully tucked the precious photograph into his jacket pocket.
The photo session had sparked an unexpected interest in documenting their adventures. He made a mental note to get some proper recording equipment at their next port - the pirate world was full of moments worth preserving for posterity.
"Alright, we've had our fun with the photos," he announced, gathering Luffy and Zoro with renewed focus. "Now it's time for the main event!"
He led them back to the empty training ground, then turned to Zoro with a slightly apologetic expression.
"Fair warning, Zoro - during this sparring session, Luffy will demonstrate his full capabilities. You might want to prepare yourself accordingly."
"Ha..." Zoro's hand instinctively drifted to the white-covered hilt of Wado Ichimonji, drawing comfort from the familiar weight of his cherished blade.
A predatory grin spread across his scarred features as the fighting instinct stirred in his blood.
"I appreciate your concern, Vice Captain, but don't you think you're underestimating me a little?"
Akira's smile turned mysteriously knowing. "Whether I'm underestimating you or not... well, you'll find out soon enough!"
He left the cryptic promise hanging in the air as he walked over to Luffy and placed an encouraging hand on his captain's shoulder.
"Go test the skills of our new crew member," he said with obvious pride. "I have a feeling you'll be impressed with what he can do."
His expression became more serious as he added specific instructions. "Remember what we discussed - use your full strength this time. Skip the second gear as it's just sparring, but don't hold back in the third gear. Show Zoro what real power looks like!"
"Heh! I can barely contain myself!" Luffy grinned with unbridled excitement, rolling his shoulders and stretching his arms in preparation.
The two fighters walked purposefully towards the centre of the training ground, their footsteps echoing off the surrounding stone walls.
Meanwhile, Akira took Nami by the arm and quickly led her to a safe distance near the outer wall of the base, leaving her thoroughly confused by the precautions.
"It's just a friendly sparring match," she protested, squinting at Luffy and Zoro, who now appeared finger-sized in the distance. "Why do we have to be so far away?"
Akira looked at her with the patient expression of someone explaining basic physics to a child, then sighed with obvious concern.
"Far? It may not be far enough."
"I just hope the shockwaves from their fight don't reach us here."
His tone became protective as he added, "If things get really intense, don't hesitate to hide behind me. I may not be much of a fighter, but I can definitely protect you."
"Oh... okay," Nami nodded uncertainly.
She couldn't understand why Akira - who had effortlessly defeated Captain Morgan with mystical powers - claimed to have limited fighting abilities. Nothing about this crew made logical sense.
As they spoke, the two fighters in the centre of the arena had completed their preparations.
Zoro tied his signature bandana around his head with practiced efficiency, then assumed his classic three-sword stance. Every line of his body radiated focused readiness as he faced his opponent with the intensity of a predator preparing to strike.
True to form, Luffy wasted no time in elaborate preparations. As soon as he confirmed that Zoro was ready, he launched into his tried-and-tested battle strategy.
Soru plus rubber-enhanced attack - the combination that had proven devastating against every opponent they'd faced!
Whoosh!
A blur of movement exploded across the training ground as Luffy's form simply disappeared from sight. The speed was still beyond normal human perception, leaving only displaced air and settling dust to mark his passage.
However...
"Being fast doesn't make you untouchable!" Zoro growled with fierce determination.
His predatory instincts flared to life as he spun around with fluid grace, somehow tracking Luffy's approach even though he could not see the actual movement. Years of life and death battles had honed his combat awareness to supernatural levels.
BANG! CLANG!
Luffy's rubber-enhanced fist slammed into the crossed blades of all three swords with thunderous impact. The collision sent sparks flying in all directions as raw kinetic energy met perfectly tempered steel.
The force of the blow threw Zoro backwards, his feet cutting deep grooves in the packed earth as he struggled to keep his footing. For a few heart-stopping seconds, it seemed as if he would be completely overwhelmed.
But then he slowly straightened up, the legendary Wado Ichimonji still firmly clenched between his teeth, and smiled with wild satisfaction.
"Looks like this won't be as overwhelming as I expected!"
Seeing Zoro successfully block his attack without being confused by the high-speed manoeuvre, Luffy's excitement reached new heights.
"You really are the man Akira chose to join our crew!" he laughed with genuine admiration.
"But now I have to get serious!"
"Bring it on!" Zoro's eyes blazed with unwavering determination as his swords hummed with barely contained energy.
The next moment, Luffy's form became a streak of movement again as he launched his follow-up attack.
This time, Zoro decided to meet aggression with aggression.
"Three-sword style: Oni Giri!"
Unfortunately for the aspiring World's Greatest Swordsman, two and a half years of intensive training under Akira's tutelage had elevated Luffy's fighting skills far beyond typical East Blue standards.
He exploded forward with even greater speed, his rubber-enhanced blow connecting with devastating force before Zoro's slash could complete its arc.
CRASH!
Zoro's body transformed into a human missile, hurtling backwards across the training ground before crashing through the outer wall of the Marine base with a bone-crushing impact.
BOOM!
Stone and mortar exploded outwards as the already weakened structure collapsed completely, burying the swordsman under a pile of rubble and debris.
Seeing this dramatic end to their brief exchange, Akira turned to the shell-shocked Nami with an expression of complete vindication.
"See? I told you it wasn't safe to get too close!"
"We're lucky that Zoro flew in the opposite direction, otherwise we would have been caught in the destruction."
"Wait!" Nami grabbed Akira's arm in panic, her previous scepticism replaced by genuine concern. "Isn't this supposed to be a friendly sparring match?! Why are they trying to kill each other?!"
The intensity of this battle far exceeded the violence she'd witnessed during Akira's confrontation with Morgan! And he'd claimed that he was using his full power!
No wonder he insisted he wasn't good at fighting - if this was what 'holding back' looked like, she couldn't imagine what real combat would be like.
"Relax, Nami," Akira said with unshakable confidence. "Don't underestimate Zoro's endurance."
"There are no weaklings among the Straw Hat Pirates."
His gaze fixed on her with unexpected intensity. "That includes you."
"Me?!" Nami blinked in surprise, unsure why the conversation had suddenly shifted to her potential.
But something about Akira's unwavering conviction sent an unexpected warmth through her chest - a feeling she hadn't experienced in years.
Sure enough, movement in the rubble confirmed his prediction.
A battered but defiant figure emerged from the collapsed wall, shaking dust and debris from his green hair. Zoro looked dishevelled and slightly dazed, but his fighting spirit burned brighter than ever.
"You can still stand after being hit like that?" Luffy shouted in amazement.
He really hadn't held back with that punch - it was the full force of his rubber-enhanced power!
But not only had Zoro survived the blow, he was preparing to fight again. This proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that Akira's assessment of her new crew member was absolutely correct.
The swordsman's potential was truly extraordinary!
"This is getting more and more interesting!" Luffy grinned with predatory excitement as his form blurred into motion once again.
But before he could launch another devastating attack, Akira's voice rang out across the training ground:
"Hey! You two! Keep the fight inside the base! Don't let it spill over into the city and endanger the civilians!"
"I'm not weak enough to be pushed around so easily!" Zoro shouted back, his pride stinging from being treated like a victim rather than a worthy opponent.
Seeing Luffy's continuous improvement in the heat of battle made him realise a fundamental truth - if he didn't unleash his most desperate techniques, he would never witness his captain's true abilities!
So this is what it means to be trained by someone like Akira, he thought with grudging respect. The gulf between us is even greater than I imagined.
"I'm sorry I didn't give you a better fight, Captain!" he shouted, his voice carrying genuine regret mixed with fierce determination.
"But this man is incredibly strong!"
Is this really the difference a trainer can make?
Thousands of thoughts flashed through Zoro's mind in the span of a heartbeat, but he forcibly pushed them aside as Luffy's fist approached with the speed of a meteorite.
So this is the world of true power...
"Three-Sword Secret Technique: Sanzen Sekai!"
