Chapter 22: Chapter 22: Ripples of the Straw Hat Pirates
Dawn broke over the East Blue like liquid gold flowing over dark velvet. A streak of brilliant light appeared on the distant horizon, expanding with breathtaking speed until it had completely dispelled the shadows of night. Within minutes, the world was transformed from midnight black to the warm amber of early morning.
"Ah~ I had the best sleep ever!"
Luffy burst through the cabin door with explosive energy, his face radiating pure joy. Thanks to his ability to regenerate, one of the mysterious gifts of the Pokémon world, the Rubber Boy had slept deeply and completely, regaining his strength even after the most strenuous training sessions.
He cupped his hands over his mouth and roared toward the galley: "Hey! Nami! Where's breakfast?! I'm starving over here!"
Whoosh!
A metal spatula shot out of the cabin like a rocket, whistling past Luffy's eyebrows before embedding itself in the deck with a violent thunk. The hilt vibrated ominously in the morning air.
"SHUT UP!" Nami's voice erupted from below with volcanic fury. "If you complain again, you can go hungry for the rest of the day!"
Luffy's eyes widened in genuine horror at the threat. He immediately put both hands over his mouth, his voice muffled as he whispered: "What a scary woman..."
"Hahaha~ Relax, Nami," Akira's calm voice drifted up from the cabin, carrying a note of amused sympathy. "Just hang in there for a few more days, I've already got someone in mind for the ship's cook. As soon as we hire him, you'll be free of kitchen duty."
"Really?!" The hope in Nami's voice was unmistakable as she worked over a small pot, boiling eggs with the methodical precision of someone who had mastered the basics out of necessity rather than passion.
"I'm supposed to be your navigator!" she continued, frustration bleeding through her words. "Why do I have to do all the cooking?"
Despite her complaints, her hands never stopped moving as she prepared her morning meal. However, the way she attacked the potatoes with her knife suggested that she was imagining certain annoying rubber captains with each violent cut. The air around her seemed to darken with barely contained homicidal intent.
Even Zoro, who had just emerged from his own quarters, took one look at the scene and quietly retreated to the safety of his room.
Such was the warm and friendly atmosphere aboard the Straw Hat Pirates' ship every morning.
Meanwhile, hundreds of miles away in the Grand Line, the imposing fortress of Naval Headquarters was buzzing with unprecedented activity. In one of the building's strategic meeting rooms, a gathering of high-ranking naval officers had been called specifically to discuss the actions of four young pirates from the East Blue.
"PROVOCATION! This is nothing but naked provocation!"
A burly rear admiral with a face that could intimidate sea monsters slammed his fist down on the conference table, sending several documents flying. His voice cracked with barely contained rage as he jabbed a finger at the photo spread before them.
"These damn pirates not only attacked a naval facility, they had the audacity to take a commemorative photo afterwards!"
The picture in question showed four young people happily posing in front of Marine Base 153, their expressions radiating the kind of carefree confidence that made Navy blood pressure rise to dangerous levels. To every officer present, this wasn't just criminal behavior, it was a direct insult to everything they stood for.
"We absolutely cannot allow this crew to escape into open waters!" the Rear Admiral continued, his face growing darker with each word. "This level of disrespect demands an immediate and overwhelming response!"
But another officer, a rear admiral with worry lines etched deep into his eyes, held up another document with obvious concern.
"This may be more difficult than you think," he said gravely. "Did you read the supplementary report? This isn't just another rookie pirate crew causing trouble."
"Supplemental report?" Several voices spoke in unison as the assembled officers frantically flipped through their briefing materials.
What they found on the following pages drained the color from every face in the room.
"Hiss, !" The collective gasp was audible as seasoned Marines struggled to process what they were seeing.
"This can't be right!" protested one officer. "These are just rookies who set sail yesterday!"
"If this information is correct," another said slowly, "then we're dealing with something far more serious than a simple case of pirate vandalism."
The room erupted into heated discussion as the implications sank in. Even the furious Rear Admiral fell silent, his anger replaced by cold analysis as he studied the following documents.
Page two contained an aerial photograph of Marine Base 153's training grounds, taken from the highest tower of the fortress. The image showed devastation on a scale that defied belief: collapsed walls, cobweb cracks covering the entire courtyard, and most shocking of all, a massive fist-shaped crater carved deep into the solid earth.
Below the photo, a clinical summary provided context that made the scene even more disturbing:
[Aerial view of training grounds after sparring session between Straw Hat Pirates Captain Monkey D. Luffy and crew member Roronoa Zoro].
For comparison, an additional photo showed the same area in its previous, undamaged state.
The silence lasted for many minutes before the Rear Admiral pressed his palms to his temples, fighting off a stress headache.
"Damn it! Why do the most dangerous individuals always come from the East Blue?"
His voice hardened with determination as he continued: "We need to put out bounties immediately, let the world know exactly how dangerous these criminals are. And contact Smoker in Loguetown. He must intercept them before they reach the Grand Line."
The officer's fist slammed down with authority. "We cannot, absolutely cannot, allow you to become the next Fire Fist Ace!"
"SIR, YES SIR!" The answer thundered through the room as every Marine present snapped to attention. Whatever storms lay ahead, they would face them with the unwavering conviction that 'Justice' demanded.
Back on the peaceful waters of the East Blue, the Straw Hat Pirates enjoyed a much more relaxed morning. Thanks to Nami's determined efforts, they'd managed to produce a breakfast that was actually edible, a vast improvement over their previous maritime meals.
"Wait, what?!" Luffy's voice cracked with indignation as he processed Zoro's casual revelation. "You and Akira went to the Pokémon World last night without me?"
His expression went through several stages of betrayal before settling on the devastating pout of a child who'd been left out of the best game ever.
"How could you leave me behind?! That's totally unfair!"
Akira put down his chopsticks with an apologetic sigh. "Sorry, Luffy, but it couldn't be helped. My ability can only support bringing one person into the game world at a time."
Inside, he couldn't help but wish things were different. In the original Pokémon games, experience points were automatically shared among all party members. If he could somehow bring multiple people into the virtual world at the same time, the training possibilities would be limitless.
Maybe future versions of the game will have things like the Exp. Share that I can bring into the real world, he mused. That would solve a lot of problems.
Unfortunately, his words fell on deaf ears. Luffy had already thrown himself onto the deck and started rolling around like a child denied his favorite toy.
"No, no, no! I want to go on adventures too! It's not fair that Zoro gets all the fun!"
With a long-suffering expression on his face, Akira stood up and planted his foot firmly on Luffy's back, stopping the dramatic tantrum in its tracks.
"Alright, alright, you win! I'll take you to the Pokémon World today instead."
The decision was actually in line with his strategic thinking. Their next destination would be Cerulean City, home to a Water-type gym that should provide substantial experience gains. While water types traditionally had advantages over opponents who relied on physical attacks, Luffy's current power level made the effectiveness of the type somewhat irrelevant.
More importantly, Akira had developed a theory about Armament Haki that he was eager to test. If his hypothesis was correct, intensive training in the Pokémon world could trigger Luffy's natural awakening of this crucial ability.
The timing couldn't be better, considering that they would eventually face Smoker in Loguetown. While Akira had contingency plans for dealing with the Smoke-Powered Marine, having Luffy as a master of the Haki Armament would make everything much easier.
"Really?! You mean it?!" Luffy's mood instantly changed from despair to explosive joy. He jumped to his feet and began to do celebratory backflips across the deck.
"YES! Thank you, Akira! You're the best vice captain ever!"
"Don't get used to it," Akira warned with mock severity. "From now on, I will decide who enters the Pokémon world based on strategic necessity, not because someone throws a tantrum."
"Hehe, no problem!" Luffy grinned as he made a perfect landing. "I promise I'll do better in the future!"
Then his expression became slightly embarrassed as he turned to Zoro. "Sorry for stealing your turn, moss head. I just... after sparring with you yesterday, I feel like I'm on the verge of mastering something important."
There was genuine excitement in his voice, mixed with anticipation. "I want to test it in the Pokémon world and see if I can finally break through to the next level!"
Zoro's scarred face broke into an understanding smile. As a fellow warrior dedicated to constant improvement, he recognized the burning need to push beyond one's current limitations.
"Don't worry about it, rubber brain," he said with gruff affection. "We've all been there, that feeling when you know you're one step away from a breakthrough."
His hand unconsciously moved to rest on Wado Ichimonji's hilt as he continued: "Besides, the stronger you get, the better sparring partners we'll be for each other. Everyone benefits when the crew gets better."
Nami watched the exchange with growing bewilderment, still struggling to understand how her new crewmates treated impossibly dangerous training as casually as most people discussed the weather.
These people are completely insane, she thought with a mixture of admiration and horror. And somehow I'm one of them now.
The realization was both exhilarating and terrifying.
As the morning sunlight danced across the waves and their small vessel continued its steady progress toward the next island, the Straw Hat Pirates prepared for another day of adventures that would surely defy both logic and the laws of physics.
Behind them, their reputation was already spreading like wildfire through the naval communications networks. Ahead lay challenges that would test every ounce of strength, cunning, and determination they possessed.
But for now, surrounded by the endless blue of the East Blue and the easy camaraderie of true Nakama, life was as it should be.
