Chapter 43: Chapter 43: The Power of Dragons and Bonds of Loyalty
"The Pokémon energy in that slash... it's definitely stronger than before!"
Akira watched with growing excitement as Zoro channeled supernatural power through his sword work, achieving techniques that should have been far beyond his current skill level. The satisfaction on his face was impossible to hide.
From a pure kendo perspective, Zoro hadn't yet reached the level where he could cut steel, let alone perform the flying slashes that only true sword masters could perform. Those were techniques that required years of dedicated training and a perfect understanding of the spirit of the blade.
But empowered by Pokémon Energy, Zoro had completely bypassed those traditional limits. He'd leapt right past the steel-cutting threshold, demonstrating sword techniques that rivaled those of legendary masters.
While the unique properties of Pokémon Energy certainly played a role, what really mattered was Zoro's unwavering will and natural talent. His determination to overcome every obstacle had allowed him to forge an entirely new path to greatness.
In the eyes of any other swordsman witnessing this display, Zoro would already be recognized as an absolute master of the blade.
Luffy's awakening of the Armament Haki, and now Zoro's breakthrough into supernatural swordsmanship...
These two really knew how to surprise him in the best possible way.
Akira smiled with deep satisfaction, then jumped gracefully from the second floor of the villa down to the courtyard below. His enhanced physique made the landing effortless, barely disturbing the ground beneath his feet.
The aftermath of Zoro's tornado technique had turned Kaya's elegant garden into something resembling a battlefield. The carefully manicured landscape looked as if a hurricane had torn through it, leaving torn earth and debris scattered in all directions.
But even after such a devastating punishment, Kuro somehow still clung to life.
"I... my plan... it absolutely... will not... fail..."
He glared at Akira with bloodshot eyes filled with desperate hatred, as if to burn the image of his tormentor into his memory for all eternity. Even with his tendons severed and his body broken, the former pirate captain's malice remained undimmed.
"What incredible tenacity," Akira observed with grudging respect.
Though evil to the core, Kuro possessed the kind of relentless determination that had made him a real threat in the East Blue. Such willpower was rare, even among pirates.
"What a waste."
Akira bent down and picked up one of the broken Cat Claw blades scattered across the devastated garden. The steel fragment was still razor sharp, despite being shattered by Zoro's supernatural flames.
Without ceremony, he hurled the improvised weapon with deadly precision.
Thunk!
The blade sank deep into Kuro's forehead, piercing his brain and sinking into the ground below. The infamous Captain Kuro of the Black Cat Pirates, the man who had endured three years of humiliation in search of the perfect retirement plan, finally found the eternal peace he'd never really wanted.
With Kuro's death, the immediate threat to Syrup Village was gone.
Evening shadows stretched across the villa as servants and staff gradually returned to their duties. Under Merry's careful guidance and reassuring presence, the household slowly returned to normal.
Although the estate had experienced a major crisis, the fact that none of the staff had been seriously injured helped to ease the transition. In a world where pirate attacks were an unfortunate reality, such incidents, while traumatic, were not entirely unprecedented.
In the villa's formal reception room, Miss Kaya stood gracefully, bowing deeply and respectfully to the assembled Straw Hat Pirates. Merry stood beside her, his weathered face reflecting both gratitude and lingering concern for his young mistress.
"Thank you for everything you've done," Kaya said, her voice filled with genuine warmth despite her obvious exhaustion. "If you hadn't arrived when you did, I can't imagine what would have happened to me... to all of us."
She straightened, her delicate features brightening with renewed purpose. "I understand you have come here in search of a ship for your crew. I've already spoken with Mr. Merry, and I'm happy to confirm that our family's shipyard has recently completed the construction of a new sailing vessel."
She looked affectionately at the elderly butler beside her. "The designer of this ship is actually Merry himself, it represents his finest work."
"However," she continued with a slight hesitation, "the ship will require several more days of final adjustments and testing before it's ready for sea travel. Would you be willing to wait here as our guests until everything is ready?"
The request was made with such genuine politeness that it seemed more like an honor than an inconvenience.
What puzzled Kaya, though she didn't say so, was that Akira seemed to understand technical details about the ship that surprised even Merry, the ship's actual designer. His knowledge of naval engineering seemed far more extensive than any teenage pirate should possess.
Such mysteries, however, seemed trivial compared to the larger questions now facing her future. After surviving an assassination attempt by someone she trusted completely, Kaya found herself rethinking everything about the direction of her life.
Across the polished conference table, Luffy's reaction to her request was immediate and enthusiastic.
"No problem! Of course we can wait!" he declared with characteristic excitement, practically jumping in his chair. "A few days is nothing!"
The prospect of finally acquiring his own pirate ship filled him with almost uncontrollable joy. More importantly, Akira had repeatedly assured him that the ship they were about to receive would be the finest pirate ship in the entire world.
Seeing Luffy's wholehearted agreement, Merry visibly relaxed. The elderly butler had been quietly worried about possible complications, but the Straw Hat's gracious acceptance put his concerns to rest.
"Thank you for your understanding," he said with professional courtesy, his tone conveying genuine relief. "I will make sure that every detail of your stay is handled properly. You won't want for anything during your time here."
He paused for a moment before continuing with a more serious expression. "I should also mention that I contacted the local naval garrison regarding Captain Kuro's bounty. Unfortunately, they informed me that rewards for deceased pirates whose bounties have been revoked are no longer honored."
His weathered features showed disappointment as he delivered the news. "I'm afraid Kuro's remains have no monetary value."
"What?!" Nami's voice cracked with dismay as visions of sixteen million berries evaporated before her eyes. "Why would they do that?!"
She'd mentally calculated exactly how much treasure they could have claimed, and the sudden loss felt like a physical blow to her financially oriented heart.
Sensing the crew's potential disappointment, Merry quickly offered an alternative. "But that doesn't mean your heroic actions will go unrewarded, pretty lady."
His tone brightened considerably as he delivered better news. "To express our family's sincere gratitude for eliminating this terrible threat, Miss Kaya is willing to offer twenty million berries as compensation for your services."
"Really?!" Nami's eyes literally turned to gold coins as greed overwhelmed her previous disappointment. The prospect of acquiring even more money than the original bounty sent her into a frenzy of financial ecstasy.
But her dreams of wealth were destined to be crushed by disappointment.
"Just a moment, Mr. Merry," Akira interjected softly, his calm voice cutting through Nami's gleeful calculations like a blade through silk.
He gave the butler a respectful smile before addressing Kaya directly. "Miss Kaya, we truly appreciate your gratitude and generosity. However, I believe we should decline any monetary reward."
His gesture embraced the promised ship with obvious satisfaction. "This magnificent ship you're offering us is the greatest gift we could possibly receive. Besides, we're not here for profit or payment."
He turned his attention to Usopp, who had sat uncomfortably throughout the discussion, clearly struggling with internal conflicts.
"Isn't that right, Usopp?"
The sniper nearly jumped out of his skin when Akira's direct gaze fell on him. He had desperately hoped to avoid the spotlight, but his new vice captain seemed determined to force him into the conversation.
"Huh?!" Usopp's voice cracked with nervous tension.
To be honest, he'd only agreed to join the Straw Hat Pirates because saving Kaya had required their help. But witnessing Zoro's incredible battle against Kuro had reawakened the fundamental question that plagued his self-confidence: what possible value could he offer to such extraordinary people?
The question had been gnawing at him since Kuro's defeat, and he still hadn't found a satisfactory answer.
Luffy, oblivious to Usopp's internal struggles, supported Akira's statement with his characteristic enthusiasm.
"That's exactly right!" he declared loudly, his voice ringing with conviction. "Helping your nakama requires no reward! That's what it means to be part of a crew!"
"Nakama?" Both Kaya and Merry turned to Usopp in surprise, obviously unaware of this latest development.
"Ahaha..." Usopp rubbed the back of his head with embarrassed awkwardness, his cheeks flushing red under their scrutiny. "It happened this afternoon. I accepted their invitation and officially became a member of the Straw Hat Pirates."
"What?!" Kaya's delicate features registered complete shock as the implications hit her. "Mr. Usopp, you mean... you really want to become a pirate?"
"Yes," Usopp confirmed, unconsciously touching his distinctive nose in a nervous gesture. "I'll be sailing with Luffy and the others very soon."
His expression brightened with forced confidence as he tried to project his usual braggadocio. "Kaya, I am sure you will hear incredible stories about my heroic adventures across the seas!"
Silence fell over the reception room like a heavy curtain. Kaya's head dropped as she absorbed the devastating news, her blonde hair hiding her expression.
Just as Usopp began to worry that he'd said the wrong thing, she raised her head again and nodded with determined radiance.
"Yes! I absolutely believe that you will accomplish amazing things!"
Despite her encouraging words, crystal tears flickered in her eyes for a moment before she quickly blinked them away.
Usopp was one of the most important relationships in her isolated life. Whether it was his regular visits to tell her magical adventure stories, or his sudden appearance in her darkest hour of need, his presence had become irreplaceable in her heart.
The truth was, Kaya desperately wanted Usopp to stay in Syrup Village, to stay by her side, where she could see him every day. The thought of losing him to the vast, dangerous ocean filled her with unspeakable fear.
But she also knew that sailing to distant seas had always been Usopp's deepest dream. No matter how much it hurt, she refused to be an obstacle between him and his heart's desire.
Even in the original timeline, Akira mused silently as he observed the emotional undercurrents, if Usopp had chosen to stay, he probably could have become the richest man in Syrup Village while living happily with Miss Kaya.
I can only say... Usopp, you magnificent fool.
Night fell quietly over the villa after an evening spent enjoying Kaya's generous hospitality. After an excellent dinner, the Straw Hat Pirates retired to the luxurious guest quarters that Merry had prepared for their stay.
As everyone settled in for the night, Akira felt the familiar tingling sensation that preceded their virtual adventures. A bright white light suddenly flashed in front of his eyes, and when his vision cleared, he found himself standing in the familiar surroundings of Cerulean City's Pokémon Center.
Standing next to him was a beautiful orange-haired girl, her amber eyes sparkling with barely contained excitement and wonder.
"This is..." Nami breathed out, her voice filled with awe as she took in the impossibly advanced medical facility surrounding them. "This is really the Pokémon World?"
The pristine white walls, gleaming medical equipment, and mysterious healing machines created an atmosphere that seemed decades ahead of anything from their pirate world. Even the air itself felt different, charged with energy and possibility.
"Welcome to a realm where the impossible becomes routine," Akira said with an amused smile, enjoying her astonished reaction. "Are you ready to discover what treasures this world has hidden for us?"
