Chapter 56: Chapter 56: Execution.
"Ace!!!"
A loud, youthful voice pierced through the chaos, cutting across the battlefield where roars and screams echoed like thunder. Despite the uproar, this voice stood out clearly.
Everyone on the battlefield turned toward the source, spotting a black speck atop the thousand-meter-high iceberg.
Squinting, they saw a warship cresting the iceberg—soaring above before plummeting from the sky.
It fell several hundred meters before they could make out its details. Although it bore the form of a Marine warship, it was packed with people wearing prison uniforms.
At the bow, Luffy shouted at the top of his lungs, as 241 fugitives from Impel Down revealed themselves.
In midair, the escaped prisoners leaped from the warship like a meteor shower, abandoning it to fall directly into the melee—each with Luffy's wild momentum.
"Sea Knight" Jinbei, "Desert King" Crocodile, "Queen of the Kamabakka" Ivankov, "Clown" Buggy—
Countless infamous figures, led by "Straw Hat" Luffy, had broken out of the world's most secure prison and arrived to shake the battlefield!
They landed hard, sending up clouds of debris. Ivankov dusted himself off and stood tall as several prisoners hopped from his voluminous hair.
With their arrival, the battlefield shifted again. The presence of so many powerful combatants rattled both sides and forced a rapid rethinking of strategies.
Unfazed, Luffy was already on the bow of the Moby Dick, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Whitebeard.
"Ace, I'm here to save you!"
"Gurararara! Get in the way, and I'll kill you too!"
The reckless youth who dared to challenge the world now stood before a Yonko without a hint of fear. It was partly his bond with Ace—but also a fiery courage that even Whitebeard could admire.
In that moment, the Whitebeard Pirates and the Impel Down fugitives formed an alliance—choosing to fight side-by-side to rescue Ace.
"Luffy~!"
The arrival of Luffy stirred something fierce in Boa Hancock. The Pirate Empress of the Seven Warlords, smitten with the Straw Hat boy, turned against the Marines without hesitation.
The new arrivals washed away the grief of Little Oars Jr.'s death and the pirates' mounting losses, rekindling their fighting spirit.
Not only had their numbers grown, but their morale had surged—the tide of war began to shift again.
"I'm coming, Ace!"
Lifting the banner of vengeance for Little Oars Jr., Luffy stretched forward with his Gum-Gum powers, charging toward the execution platform.
Though their numbers were small, the escaped prisoners were mighty. They tore through the Marine ranks with ease.
Their force merged into the Whitebeard Pirates' formation, driving them straight into the inner bay's plaza.
As the battlefield advanced, Whitebeard himself jumped from his ship, charging to the front lines to lead.
Boom!
At the height of morale, Whitebeard suddenly stiffened—his face contorted in pain as a long blade pierced deep into his abdomen.
From afar, Admiral Akainu grinned darkly. His plan had worked.
Unaware and undefended, Whitebeard had been betrayed by Squard—also known as the "Great Vortex Spider"—a man he considered family.
"Why should we die for Ace?!"
Squard's hatred traced back to the destruction of his crew at the hands of the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger. Upon learning Ace was Roger's son, Akainu fed him lies—that Whitebeard had made a secret deal with Sengoku: let Ace and Whitebeard live, and sacrifice the other crews.
Squard believed it. He thought Whitebeard had abandoned his 43 subordinate pirate crews—thought the old man had grown soft, indifferent to their fate.
"You fool... I still love you."
Despite the betrayal, Whitebeard embraced his misguided son. He had seen too many lies in his life—not a word Squard said escaped his understanding.
Even so, Whitebeard forgave him.
If a father cannot forgive his son's confusion and anger, who can?
Watching his crewmates fall, Squard realized the truth. The lie had unraveled. The Navy had used him.
"Dad... I'm sorry."
Tears streamed down Squard's face. But he was still a captain—he wouldn't wallow in regret.
Wiping his tears, Squard roared and rushed back into battle.
The tide shifted once more. The Marines were stunned by Whitebeard's strength and unshakable will. Their formation began to crumble.
"Charge, my sons!!"
Fueled by rage over the Navy's treachery, Whitebeard raised his massive naginata, Murakumogiri, and struck.
The force of the quake shattered dozens of Marines and surged toward the execution platform. Marineford was rocked to its core.
The three Admirals—Akainu, Kizaru, and Aokiji—abandoned their fights to stand united at the platform's base, blocking the destructive force.
The Navy's strongest fighters held the line, but the battle had entered a fever pitch.
Akainu, seething with fury, charged at Whitebeard.
"Hellhound!"
He knew each quake attack left Whitebeard vulnerable. Age and injury took their toll.
He swung his magma-infused fist. It transformed into a molten hound, striking directly through Whitebeard's abdomen.
"Pops!"
Cries echoed across the battlefield. But Whitebeard, bleeding and battered, stood tall. He fought on, blade swinging, heart unyielding.
Their duel raged at the center of the war.
Meanwhile, under his Whitebeard's protection, Luffy broke through the Marine blockade—getting closer and closer to Ace.
But just as he neared, a towering figure blocked his path: Dracule Mihawk.
The world's greatest swordsman raised his blade, preparing a devastating slash.
Luffy had once witnessed Mihawk's power in the East Blue. He knew the danger.
But before the slash could land, flower petals danced in the air—Foil Borsalino, the 5th Division Commander, intercepted Mihawk with twin blades.
Inspired by Whitebeard's love and Luffy's courage, the division commanders moved out—clearing the path to the scaffold.
As Luffy approached the platform, Whitebeard finally dropped to one knee—panting, body drenched in blood.
At seventy years old, the toll of his abilities was immense. Each quake crushed enemies—but also chipped away at his life.
Still, the Whitebeard Pirates had smashed through the Navy's interior defenses.
"This strength… this influence… he truly is the strongest man in the world."
Sengoku, watching the chaos unfold in the square between the twin icebergs, had misjudged everything. The battle damage was beyond expectation.
In a burst of fury, the Fleet Admiral issued the order.
"Executioners, prepare! Commence the execution!"
