Chapter 69: Chapter 69: The Fire God Squad's Training
Jiang Kai distributed the equipment they had left behind. Hu Yan and Ruan Yu each received a Grizzly Leather Armor and a pair of Fury Pants.
Since in Destiny Calling, identical items' effects cannot stack, Jiang Kai gave the additional Ring of Spirit to Hu Yan.
Jiang Kai also needed to equip himself with the Night Pants and Phantom Armor.
After putting on their new equipment, the three of them looked noticeably different.
The Grizzly Leather Armor was actually a type of inner armor, crafted from a single piece of tough, brown leather. The joint areas were made of some high-density soft fiber material, allowing the wearer full mobility without any hindrance.
The leather armor's attributes were decent, providing up to 7 points of defense. Unless faced with weapons that had high penetration, it was difficult to pierce through.
The Fury Pants offered a solid attribute boost, particularly a 14-point increase in agility. Lightweight and providing extra fire resistance, they were highly cost-effective.
Hu Yan and Ruan Yu touched their new leather armor, visibly excited.
"We used to only borrow gear from the guild. Now, we finally have our own equipment." Ruan Yu exclaimed.
"Yeah, before, any money we had went to the guild. Who could afford gear for themselves?" Hu Yan also admired his new equipment.
Before long, Jiang Kai also finished changing into his new outfit.
When Hu Yan and Ruan Yu saw Jiang Kai's equipment, they froze for a moment.
"Captain Kai, your Phantom Armor looks so thin," Hu Yan said, frowning. "It doesn't feel like armor; it's more like casual wear."
The name "Phantom Armor" sounded powerful, evoking the image of a robust outer layer, but in reality, it looked more like a black silk long-sleeve shirt.
Paired with the black Night Pants, it didn't really look like protective gear at all.
Ruan Yu furrowed his brows. "This shirt won't block anything."
Jiang Kai shrugged. "The Phantom Armor doesn't have any defense stats anyway. At least it's lightweight."
"By the way, Ruan Yu, didn't you work in a smithy before? I want to embed these two strong magnets into my gloves. Which shop in the main city is good for that?"
Hu Yan quickly interjected, "Why go back to the city? Captain, just give the materials to Ruan Yu. He's got top-notch skills."
Jiang Kai stared at Ruan Yu, wide-eyed. "You can do it? Do you even have the tools?"
Ruan Yu gave a sheepish smile. "After working in the main city for so many years, I picked up a little bit of everything. I even carry my tools around. Sometimes I take on some private jobs for extra cash."
"Captain, give me the gloves, the magnets, and the weapon you want to bind. I'll need about... an hour and a half."
Jiang Kai looked at Ruan Yu, surprised. This guy was pretty versatile... though taking that long to embed magnets? Maybe his versatility came at the cost of precision.
Still, Jiang Kai figured it wasn't a complicated task. Giving it to a teammate would save him the forging fee anyway.
He handed over the Arsonist Gloves, two strong magnets, and the Chasing Nine Tribulations. Ruan Yu took the items and disappeared into the tent.
Not long after, the sound of clanging tools echoed from the tent.
Since Ruan Yu would need some time, Jiang Kai instructed Hu Yan to focus on comprehending his new skill. This time, Hu Yan didn't argue and eagerly went into his tent to study his abilities.
Jiang Kai sat by the campfire and opened his wristwatch.
Jiang Lan was receiving treatment at the military hospital. One major advantage of the hospital was that they directly accepted star coins, saving Jiang Kai the hassle of converting Alliance credits offline.
After being admitted, Jiang Lan's account was set up specifically for medical expenses. Jiang Kai could check the balance directly through his watch.
He noticed that two transfers had been made to the account: 200,000 and 100,000 Alliance credit.
Now, the account balance was down to just 19,000 Alliance credits.
"Before logging into Destiny's Calling, I transferred 200,000 to my brother and 100,000 to Yingzi. Looks like Yingzi deposited all of it into the account."
"But now, there's less than 20,000 left... They must've started some preliminary treatments."
Jiang Kai immediately transferred another 300,000 star coins into the account, updating the balance to "300,000 star coins, 19,422 Alliance credits."
With this money, his brother could not only proceed with surgery but also cover rehabilitation costs and Yingzi's living expenses comfortably.
After completing the transfer, Jiang Kai felt a massive weight lifted from his chest.
His primary goal for entering Destiny's Calling had been to cure his brother. Now, the funds were finally sufficient.
"Brother, get well soon. Once I've made more money, I'll buy us a bigger house."
"Our family will only get better."
The clanging from Ruan Yu's tent eventually stopped. Jiang Kai peeked inside and saw Ruan Yu, drenched in sweat, working on disassembling the gloves. The two magnets had been polished into smooth rectangular pieces and placed in a special container.
Realizing that the next steps were delicate work, Jiang Kai decided not to disturb him and waited outside.
Over an hour later, Ruan Yu emerged, holding the Arsonist Gloves and Chasing Nine Tribulations.
"How did it go?" Jiang Kai asked eagerly.
Ruan Yu scratched his head with a sheepish grin. "Captain, your setup is unique. Since you're using throwing knives, the magnetic field had to be hidden during projection to avoid affecting your attacks."
Jiang Kai nodded. He hadn't considered that problem initially.
Ruan Yu handed the items over and explained, "I made some simple modifications. First, I cut the magnets into nine small pieces, binding each to an individual throwing knife."
"Each piece is embedded into a specific finger on your gloves—four on the left hand, five on the right. You'll need to remember their locations and which knife each corresponds to."
"Huh?" Jiang Kai was stunned. He hadn't expected Ruan Yu to get so detailed.
In other words, when retrieving knives, he couldn't just recall them all at once. He'd need to target specific knives using their respective magnets.
Ruan Yu continued, "Second, I added an anti-magnetic layer inside the gloves. Under normal circumstances, the magnets are inactive, so they won't interfere with your throws. Only when you perform two quick recall gestures with the corresponding finger—while the knife isn't in your hand—will the magnetic layer deactivate, allowing the magnet to retrieve the knife. Once the knife returns, the magnet resets, and you can throw again."
Jiang Kai was astonished. Ruan Yu's craftsmanship was this advanced? Those two modifications alone were incredibly challenging.
Still, the result was clear.
To recall a knife, all Jiang Kai had to do was wiggle the corresponding finger twice.
"Captain, the magnets are extremely strong. I recommend practicing a lot; otherwise, you might struggle to adapt."
Jiang Kai nodded. "Yeah, I'll need to practice. Let's wait for Old Hu to finish his skill comprehension, then we'll head out of the safe zone to test this."
That afternoon, the Fire God Squad resupplied and ventured outside the safe zone.
In an open area, Jiang Kai hurled a throwing knife at a tree.
The knife pierced the trunk and vanished into the grass.
Standing still, Jiang Kai quickly wiggled his right index finger.
In an instant, a shadow shot out of the grass with incredible speed—far faster than the knife had been thrown.
The knife's return force was significantly stronger than its initial throw.
Fortunately, Jiang Kai had Ghost Eye and was prepared, allowing him to catch the knife.
"What power!" Jiang Kai felt the immense force transmitted through his hand. "No wonder these magnets are classified as premium gemstone-grade. Their magnetic strength is incredible."
"But this strength is an advantage. It lets the knives return faster, which is beneficial in combat."
"Moreover, during their return, the knives can deal powerful damage to any beasts they encounter."
Jiang Kai's eyes narrowed slightly.
This discovery seemed to open up a new combat style for him.
Although the recalled knives couldn't inherit his super crit effect, if the Chasing Nine Tribulations were in a tempered state, their flame damage could still benefit from the crit bonus.
By leveraging the magnets, each knife could deliver a two-stage attack.
The second stage was even more concealed and unexpected.
The more Jiang Kai thought about it, the more excited he became. Who would've thought a seemingly insignificant magnet could boost his abilities so much?
"To master this combat style, I'll need lots of practice."
Jiang Kai began throwing and recalling the knives repeatedly. His movements grew increasingly fluid, with the throw and retrieval becoming a seamless sequence. The recall gestures also became more subtle.
Through repeated practice, the nine throwing knives danced through the air, making it impossible to tell how many knives he actually had.
In this process, Jiang Kai developed multiple attack strategies, including two-stage attacks with a single knife and pincer attacks using multiple knives.
The sheer variety of tactics left even Jiang Kai astonished.
As Jiang Kai immersed himself in training, a thunderous roar suddenly erupted from nearby.
BOOM!
Jiang Kai and Ruan Yu turned their heads in surprise, only to see Hu Yan standing on a hillside, hair disheveled and clothes billowing.
"Rain, come forth!" Hu Yan shouted, and another clap of thunder followed.
Moments later, rain began pouring from the sky above them.
