Chapter 370: The bait

Let him fill in the blanks.

"You mean I could actually hurt it?"

"With a photon weapon from that range? Absolutely. These rifles were designed to kill supernatural entities. One clean shot when it's not expecting resistance could change everything."

...

Third lie. Photon weapons wouldn't scratch that monster.

The businessman's posture began shifting from cowering victim to potential hero. The psychological transformation was almost visible.

"But I don't know how to—"

That's when the nurses began their performance.

The young woman Arthur had spoken to stepped forward, tears streaming down her face.

"Please, sir. You're our only hope."

Cue the desperation.

Her colleagues joined the plea.

"My children are in this building. If you don't help us, they'll die."

"You're brave enough. I can see it in your eyes."

"Please, be our hero."

Female approval. The ultimate motivator for certain personality types.

The businessman's chest swelled with some courage. The attention from multiple attractive women was clearly affecting his judgment.

"I... I could try," he stammered, his voice gaining strength.

"If it would really help everyone."

Arthur nodded solemnly. "It's dangerous. I won't lie about that. But you're the only one who can do it."

Make it exclusive. Make it special.

"Just get to that building, find a good position, and wait. When the demon reaches our window, you'll have maybe ten seconds to take the shot before it notices you."

Ten seconds to die horribly. And save us those ten seconds you damn wasted!

The businessman looked toward the building Arthur had indicated. From their position, it appeared defensible, strategic—everything Arthur had claimed.

"How do I get across?"

"Service tunnels connect the buildings. Maintenance access in the basement. You can reach it without going outside."

The businessman's transformation was complete. Terror had become determination, and desperation had become heroic purpose.

Humans love feeling important.

"Give me the rifle. I'll do it."

Arthur handed over one of the photon weapons, ensuring the man understood the basic operation.

"Remember—wait for it to be focused on our window. That's your only chance."

The businessman clutched the weapon like a sacred relic.

"I won't let you down."

No. You won't.

As the man headed toward the stairwell, the nurses continued their encouragement. Promises of gratitude, expressions of faith in his abilities, everything needed to keep him moving toward his fate.

Arthur watched through the window as the massive demon drew closer. Fifteen hundred meters now, its burning eyes still fixed on their position.

But soon it'll have a more convenient target.

The countdown timer pulsed with increasing urgency.

[00:01:23]

...

Floyd Henderson clutched the photon weapon like a holy sword as he descended the hospital's emergency stairwell. Each step carried him further from the cowering masses above and closer to his moment of destiny.

Finally. My time to shine.

The weapon's weight felt perfect in his hands—not the burden of responsibility, but the tool of his inevitable triumph. Those beautiful nurses had seen something in him that others had missed.

They had recognised his true potential.

They knew I was special. Someone could finally see the hero beneath the surface.

A low growl echoed from the stairwell below. Floyd's grip tightened on the rifle, excitement coursing through his veins instead of fear.

Bring it on.

The defective demon that emerged from the shadows was smaller than the ones upstairs, barely seven feet tall with only two arms instead of three like some others. Its burning eyes fixed on Floyd with predatory hunger.

Floyd raised the photon weapon, crosshairs appearing in his vision exactly as the technology had promised.

Point and shoot. Simple as breathing.

ZAP!

"Hahaha, demons are so pathetic! If only they were here to see how easy I'm handling these demons." He laughed out loud, a huge smirk on his face as he continued.

The energy beam punched through the demon's chest, leaving a cauterized hole the size of a dinner plate. The creature collapsed with a shriek that would have terrified normal men.

Normal men. Good thing I'm not normal.

Floyd stepped over the dissolving corpse with confidence. The weapon's targeting system made everything effortless—he was practically unstoppable.

This is what power feels like.

Two more demons emerged from the lower floors, their grotesque forms rushing up the stairs in coordinated assault. Floyd's smile widened as he tracked their movement.

More practice targets.

ZAP! ZAP!

Both creatures crumpled under his shots. Floyd's accuracy was flawless, his timing perfect. The photon rifle might as well have been an extension of his will.

Natural talent. I'm born for this. If only I had been chosen as a beta player. I would have most likely awakened an extremely powerful talent, the strongest in humanity...but it's okay, based on the rumours I'm hearing, I might be able to awaken soon.

As he continued descending, Floyd's mind wandered to the gratitude awaiting his return. Those nurses would be so grateful, so impressed by his heroism.

Women loved heroes who saved the day—it was basic biology.

They'll owe me everything. After all, I had just saved the damsels in distress!

The brunette with the kind eyes would probably throw herself at him first. Then the blonde who'd whispered about her children. All of them recognised his superior value as a protector and provider.

Times are changing now. Monsters everywhere, civilisation crumbling.

Floyd's grin stretched wider as he reached the basement level. The old social order was dead—money and status meant nothing when demons prowled the streets.

But strength? Courage? Those matter now.

Men like him would inherit this new world. The weak would serve, the strong would rule, and the beautiful would belong to whoever could keep them safe.

Natural selection at its finest, and that's what I like about this new world.

The basement tunnels stretched ahead, dimly lit by emergency lighting. Floyd imagined the nurses watching his progress, their hearts racing with admiration and desire.

They are probably thinking he's so brave. So strong. How did we not notice him before?

The tunnel exit appeared ahead—a maintenance door leading to the building Arthur had indicated.
