==============
The long break was over.
It was late September, and perhaps thanks to the somewhat more pleasant weather compared to the height of summer, the school cafeteria was bustling again today.
"The school festival is coming up soon, isn't it?"
Isshiki, eating across from me as if it were the most natural thing, was by now a familiar sight. Especially since I had seen Isshiki frequently during the break, it didn't feel like "a long time no see" at all.
"Come to think of it, it's that time already—"
"Ah, Senpai!"
Along with that high-pitched voice, a cafeteria tray smoothly landed next to me. Looking up, I saw the face I expected, beaming with a full smile. This was Amane Sakura, who also felt like I hadn't seen her in a long time.
"It's rare to see you at school, isn't it?"
"Eh? Why is Sakura-chan sitting here so casually?"
And was it my imagination, or did I feel sparks flying between the smiling girls?
It must be. It definitely must be. I hope it is...
"Eh? Because I want to get along with Iroha-chan, you know? And with Senpai too."
"...Tch."
Ah, this girl clicked her tongue again. That's what I'm talking about, Iroha.
...I wanted to escape reality, but Isshiki's mood remained sour.
"If you want to get along with Senpai, you know. It takes a loooong time. He tends to keep his distance from people, and he rarely shows his true feelings."
"I'm perfectly fine with that, though? I know Senpai's habits very well."
Sakura glanced at me as if to say, "Right?" but what on earth were they talking about?
Anyway, I'm hungry, can't they let me eat...? She's been staring at me, making me uncomfortable, and it's definitely not a situation where I can just munch away by myself.
"Oh really... So in just a few months, you know Senpai well?"
"Of course. We work part-time together too, after all."
To Sakura's confident smile, Isshiki returned a defiant grin.
"Alright then," Isshiki prefaced, then asked Sakura.
"Here's a Senpai quiz. Where is Senpai from?"
"Chiba Prefecture."
"Correct. Well, that was an easy one."
...What is this? What has begun?
A Hachiman Hikigaya quiz right in front of him? This is seriously embarrassing to say, you know.
"Alright, my turn. What's Senpai hooked on right now?"
"Apex."
"Correct... You know that well."
"Because I sometimes see him playing it at home."
"...Huh?"
The moment Sakura heard Isshiki's answer, her tone changed.
Eh, what's with that scary voice? Was she a former delinquent? Did she have a one-night carnival and go beyond the period? I want to have fun too and become a legend of loneliness, so can I go home...?
"Alright, my turn now. What's Senpai's future dream?"
"A househusband!"
"...Correct."
The moment Sakura answered, Isshiki glared at me with an accusing look, as if saying, "What are you saying at your part-time job?"
A dream I once almost gave up on. But still, I pursue it...
"Next up. What's Senpai's sister's name?"
"The world's little sister, Komachi!"
" "Why are you answering, Senpai?" "
We were in sync. Why did I just get yelled at?
Ah... right. Sorry for interfering.
"Let me rephrase the question. What's Senpai's favorite drink?"
"Max Coffee."
"Bzzzt! Wrong!"
"Huh?! Why not?!"
As Isshiki protested, Sakura shook her index finger.
"The correct answer was Max Coffee."
"No, that's the same thing!"
"Hey, wait. Leave me out of it, and stop arguing about Max Coffee."
" "Ehh..." "
We were in sync again. But Hachiman, I can't stand it when arguments break out over Max Coffee...
"Anyway, let's eat."
"...Well, yeah."
Prompted by my words, we finally began our lunch. But of course, that didn't stop the conversation.
"The school festival is coming up soon."
It was Sakura who said that as I slurped my super cheap udon. Come to think of it, Isshiki had also just said something similar.
Our university's school festival is held every October and is open to the community. I remember it being quite extravagant, with various presentations from each seminar and laboratory, as well as non-stop stage events like comedy skits by comedians and band performances.
"My seminar is setting up a frankfurter stall. Senpai, you should come too, okay?"
Sakura invited me cheerfully, but the moment she said it, I remembered last year's crowd. I had tried going on a whim, but I remembered returning quite exhausted from the incredibly high energy and the sheer number of party people, as if they were going crazy.
"Ah, well, if I can make it, I will."
"He's definitely not going."
"Ehh, please come~. Iroha-chan too."
Sakura gave Isshiki the same kind of smile she had given me, as if to say, "Right?"
Seriously, it's a complete mystery whether they get along or not.
"I'll consider it if I go with Senpai."
"...Hmmmm."
I take back what I said earlier. These two are probably not getting along.
I slurped my udon, which I could no longer taste, pretending not to notice the invisible sparks flying...
—--------
It was after seeing Senpai off to his next lecture.
"Wait up, Iroha-chan~"
"...Why are you following me?"
After leaving the cafeteria, Sakura-chan was walking down the hallway behind me for some reason.
"Where are you going? You have a free period next, right?"
"...The library."
After a moment of hesitation about whether to answer, I replied.
I was heading to the university library. It was perfect for killing time, and even if she followed me there, it was a place where we couldn't talk like this.
"Huh, Iroha-chan, you're surprisingly serious?"
"What do you mean 'surprisingly'..."
She probably wanted to say there was a gap between my appearance and reality, but I think there's a better way to phrase it.
When I glared at her, an innocent smile returned.
"I actually had something I wanted to ask Iroha-chan."
"Oh..."
She said in a casual voice, as if she had completely forgotten our previous conversation.
When I looked into Sakura-chan's eyes with a suspicious gaze, her smile instantly vanished, and her face became serious.
"Iroha-chan, have you ever confessed to Senpai?"
"...Huh?"
For a moment, my thoughts stopped.
I had been asked something similar before, but I never expected Sakura-chan to bring it up.
"No, I haven't."
"I see. Then maybe I'll confess first."
And then she said something like that, which made my mind wander into a fog of confusion.
What exactly did she want to say? A declaration of war—I had already received that before. Was she trying to pressure me? Or was it some kind of tactic?
Honestly, I had never encountered an opponent like this before. My romantic rivals had always been kind and timid people.
But.
If that's how she was going to come at me, I had no intention of backing down an inch.
"Even if you confess now, I don't think it'll lead to you dating him."
"Right. I know that too. But you'll definitely get his attention, won't you?"
Her smile disarmed me.
I understood very well why Sakura-chan would think of such a strategy. It was the same excuse I had used on Senpai a long time ago.
But the true meaning of that confession was different. I'm sure it was a way of drawing a line.
"You're quite open about this with me, aren't you?"
"I told you before, didn't I? Let's fight fair and square. Well, I wouldn't tell you if Iroha-chan was going to confess either."
Seeing Sakura-chan speak with such resolve, I felt envious.
Why couldn't I be this honest? I was binding myself, willingly giving up my freedom.
Sakura-chan was too dazzling, and I involuntarily averted my gaze.
Beyond my line of sight, a poster caught my eye. A poster announcing the school festival events.
"No."
On an impulse, I negated Sakura-chan's words.
And then, looking directly at Sakura-chan, I said.
"I'll confess too."
