Chapter 28: The Path of No Return
"You want to use chakra?" Orochimaru turned to Saeko, pausing his work on a table covered in blood and zombie body parts.
Of course, this was only a shadow clone. His real body was busy with other experiments.
It was a cautious move. After all, studying something that could cause an apocalypse wasn't a simple task. It was extremely dangerous.
He had no intention of accidentally turning into a beast who worked on instinct.
"Yes," Saeko nodded. This was a decision she'd made after careful thought. She wanted to improve, to grow stronger in her kenjutsu. Why? She asked herself. She didn't know the exact reason. But then she asked herself, why not?
If you have the chance to become stronger, to become better, wouldn't you take the risk?
Many might not, but Saeko wasn't one of them. She believed this was a rare opportunity, one that, if missed, might never come again.
The clone thought for a while. It wasn't unexpected. In fact, Orochimaru had already planned to let people of this world unlock chakra, another one of his experiments to observe the effects.
Saeko was on that list too, but he had gotten busy with other, more important matters and never followed through.
"Why?" the clone asked with amusement. "Do you want to become a superhero and save everyone?"
Saeko immediately shook her head in denial. She had already experienced the pain of being betrayed by those she had saved. Being a hero was never her plan.
"I just want to become stronger," she said plainly.
Yes, that was it. Just a simple reason.
The clone looked into her eyes with seriousness.
"Are you sure you want to use chakra? It might not help you the way you expect. In fact, it could destroy you. You know I'm from a different world. Maybe the cause is the same, but the effects can differ from person to person. It might give you cancer. You might just die."
The clone wasn't joking or testing her bravery. He was telling the truth. After all, power could grant you strength or become the reason for your death.
Saeko was stunned. Yes, she hadn't thought about this before. There was definitely a chance she might die instead of getting stronger.
But then, her resolve returned.
"I'm ready."
She might die, but she wasn't a coward who would back down without trying.
The clone looked at her coldly, releasing killing intent that made it hard for her to breathe.
She staggered, nearly collapsing under the pressure, but even as she fell to her knees, gritting her teeth, she didn't take her words back.
Suddenly, the killing intent vanished.
Saeko took a deep breath, her lungs finally able to expand again. She looked up at the clone, only to see it smiling.
Not a mocking smile, but a genuine one.
Which somehow made it even more terrifying.
Then, without another word, the clone burst into smoke.
While she was still doubting whether her request had been accepted or not, she heard a voice from behind.
"Stand up."
Instinctively following the order, she turned to see another Orochimaru. This one was the real body.
As soon as the memories of the previous clone returned to him, he had come here.
"Saeko..." Orochimaru's voice slithered through the silence, soft and measured, yet impossibly vast, like a whisper echoing across dimensions.
"There are worlds beyond numbering," he began, stepping forward with a grace too fluid to be natural. His eyes—golden, slit-pupiled—glowed with a light not of this world. "Worlds that thrive, rot, bleed, ascend. Some where gods crawl. Others where time never began. Each governed by its own madness. Its own rules. Its own ways to evolve… or to perish."
He raised a pale hand, fingers long, elegant—meant for dissection or temptation.
"And I will devour them all."
The words didn't echo. They lingered. Heavy. Certain. His chakra pulsed outward, slow but suffocating, like the breath of something coiled and ancient.
"This path… is infinite. Not because it cannot be finished, but because it was never meant to end. Age will mean nothing. Death, even less. Power is the only language. And I intend to speak it fluently."
He tilted his head, black strands spilling across one shoulder. That smile, crooked, unreadable, curled his lips.
"To quench this bottomless hunger for strength, knowledge, evolution, I will not walk alone."
Another pause.
"But I will not take passengers. I will take tools. Weapons. Witnesses. Disciples."
His voice dropped, barely above a whisper, but it struck like a thunderclap in her soul.
"Saeko, do you wish to follow me?"
He took one final step.
"Not just as a companion, but as mine. My slave. My blade. My student. My shadow."
His eyes flared for a moment, radiating killing intent, curiosity, and invitation all at once.
"Do you want to follow me on this cursed, glorious journey across all worlds? Do you have the madness to walk beside me?"
Saeko's expression twisted into something almost indescribable—an awe-struck mix of curiosity, wonder, shock, joy, and fear.
She understood exactly what he was offering.
This wasn't just an invitation to another world. It was a plunge into an endless void of realities, each with its own horrors and hopes. If she said yes, her life and death would no longer be hers alone. She could be killed in a blink by some ancient monstrosity, devoured by forces beyond comprehension, offered as bait, or twisted into an experiment for knowledge's sake.
The danger wasn't theoretical. It was promised.
But she didn't say no.
Because in his words, twisted though they were, she saw something else.
He hadn't just called her a slave.
He had also called her a student.
And in Orochimaru's world, that meant something far deeper than obedience. It meant potential. It meant growth. It meant power. It meant that how she followed him would be just as important as the fact that she followed him at all.
This wasn't surrender.
This was transformation.
"I… I accept," she tried to speak calmly, but her voice trembled, uncertain whether it was fear, excitement, or the weight of something far bigger than herself pressing down on her chest.
"Good," Orochimaru said, almost purring the word, as if her answer had been preordained.
"Now get naked."

Potential targets like saeko?
